  • In this paper, the global study trends for material behaviors are investigated regarding the static and dynamic hardenings and final fractures of marine structural steels. In particular, after reviewing all of the papers published at the 4th and 5th ICCGS (International Conference on Collision and Grounding of Ship), the used hardening and fracture properties are summarized, explicitly presenting the material properties. Although some studies have attempted to employ new plasticity and fracture models, it is obvious that most still employed an ideal hardening rule such as perfect plastic or linear hardening and a simple shear fracture criterion with an assumed value of failure strain. HSE (2001) presented pioneering study results regarding the temperature dependency of material strain hardening at various levels of temperature, but did not show strain rate hardening at intermediate or high strain rate ranges. Nemat-Nasser and Guo (2003) carried out fully coupled tests for DH-36 steel: strain hardening, strain rate hardening, and temperature hardening and softening at multiple steps of strain rates and temperatures. The main goal of this paper is to provide the theoretical background for strain and strain rate hardening. In addition, it presents the procedure and methodology needed to derive the material constants for the static hardening constitutive equations of Ludwik, Hollomon, Swift, and Ramberg-Osgood and for the dynamic hardening constitutive equations of power from Cowper-Symonds and Johnson-Cook.

  • Adsorption is one of the best methods for wastewater purification. The fact that water quality is continuously decreasing requires the development of novel, effective and cost available adsorbents. Herein, a simple procedure for the preparation of a magnetic adsorbent from agricultural waste biomass and ferrofluid has been introduced. Specifically, ferrofluid mixed with wheat straw was directly pyrolyzed either by microwave irradiation (900 W, 30 min) or by conventional heating ($550^{\circ}C$, 90 min). Magnetic biochars were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy, textural analysis and tested as adsorbents of As(V) oxyanion and cationic methylene blue, respectively. Results showed that microwave pyrolysis produced char with high adsorption capacity of As(V) ($Q_m=25.6mg\;g^{-1}$ at pH 4), whereas conventional pyrolysis was not so effective. In comparison to conventional pyrolysis, one-step microwave pyrolysis produced a material with expressive microporosity, having a nine times higher value of specific surface area as well as total pore volume. We assumed that sorption properties are also caused by several iron-bearing composites identified by $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy ([super] paramagnetic $Fe_2O_3$, ${\alpha}-Fe$, non-stoichiometric $Fe_3C$, ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$, ${\gamma}-Fe$) transformed from nano-maghemite presented in the ferrofluid. Methylene blue was also more easily removed by magnetic biochar prepared by microwaves ($Q_m=144.9mg\;g^{-1}$ at pH 10.9) compared to using conventional techniques.

  • In the present study, a simple finite element method of analysis to predict non-uniform settlements at the interface between the mat foundation and foundation soils is proposed. Based on the proposed finite element method of analysis, the method to evaluate load sharing ratios of the foundation soils adjacent to the granular group piles is also presented. Further proposed is a procedure to estimate ultimate bearing capacity of the skirted granular group piles in a square pattern. To verify validity of the proposed methods and the estimated ultimate bearing capacity of the skirted group piles, comparisons are made with the results analyzed by using the PENTAGON3D FEM program. Finally, behavior characteristics with different reinforcement patterns of the skirts and the effect of an increase of ultimate bearing capacity due to the skirts are analyzed in connection with the design parameters.

  • Purpose: This report presents a procedure for performing power Doppler ultrasound-guided sialography using the phenomenon of increased blood flow and illustrates its application to practical patient cases. Materials and Methods: The salivary gland was scanned using ultrasound equipment (GE LOGIQ5 Expert® device; GE Medical Systems, Milwaukee, WI, USA) to identify pathological findings related to the patient's chief complaint. To identify the orifice of the main duct, it should be cannulated using a lacrimal dilator. After inserting the catheter into the cannulated main duct, the position of the catheter within the duct was confirmed by ultrasound. A contrast agent was injected until the patient felt fullness, and ultrasound (B-mode) was used to confirm whether the contrast agent filled the main canal and secondary and tertiary ducts. Then, power Doppler ultrasound was performed to determine whether the salivary gland had increased blood flow. Results: In 2 cases in this report, a power Doppler ultrasound scan showed a significant increase in blood flow after contrast medium injection, which was not observed on a preoperative scan. Conclusion: Power Doppler ultrasound was found to be a simple, safe, and effective tool for real-time sialography monitoring.

  • A design and its experimental result of a wideband self-complementary spiral antenna for UWB USPR(Ultrashort-Pulse Radar) system applications is presented. By utilizing the planar-type ultra-wideband microstrip-to-CPS balun, ultra-wideband characteristics of the inherent spiral antenna are retrieved. Also, the design procedure of the spiral antenna is simplified by performing simple impedance matching between separately designed balun and antenna. The proposed spiral antenna is equiangular self-complementary spiral antenna. The implemented antenna demonstrates widebaad performance for frequency ranges from 2.9 to 12 GHz with the relatively flat antenna gain of 2.7 to 5.3 dB and broad beamwidth of more than $70^{\circ}$. From these result, the possibility of a spiral antenna using a ultra-wideband microstrip-CPS balun is verified.

  • The purpose of this study was to detect significant SNPs for blood components that were related to immunity using high single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) density panels in a Korean native pig (KNP)${\times}$Yorkshire (YK) cross population. A reciprocal design of KNP${\times}$YK produced 249 $F_2$ individuals that were genotyped for a total of 46,865 available SNPs in the Illumina porcine 60K beadchip. To perform whole genome association analysis (WGA), phenotypes were regressed on each SNP under a simple linear regression model after adjustment for sex and slaughter age. To set up a significance threshold, 0.1% point-wise p value from F distribution was used for each SNP test. Among the significant SNPs for a trait, the best set of SNP markers were determined using a stepwise regression procedure with the rates of inclusion and exclusion of each SNP out of the model at 0.001 level. A total of 54 SNPs were detected; 10, 6, 4, 4, 5, 4, 5, 10, and 6 SNPs for neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, basophil, atypical lymph, immuno-globulin, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor-I, respectively. Each set of significant SNPs per trait explained 24 to 42% of phenotypic variance. Several pleiotropic SNPs were detected on SSCs 4, 13, 14 and 15.

  • Exact comparisons of the thermal conductivities of the base fluid and a nanofluid are very important in the early stages of nanofluid development. A simple procedure of measuring the thermal conductivity of the two fluids by the transient hot wire method and numerically dividing these values is used for this purpose. However, because the experiments are not performed simultaneously and the physical properties of the measurement system are sometimes not properly known, large errors are incurred during the evaluation process. This article proposes a new apparatus for thermal conductivity comparison where the working principle is mainly based on relative measurement rather than absolute measurement. The measuring circuit and data processing steps are explained in detail; a validation test was performed using the well-known glycerine and engine oil.

  • The established methods in the residue analysis of endosulfan require an extensive sample clean-up prior to quantification by relatively complex equipment. A radioimmunoassay(RIA) provides a simple procedure with theoretically higher sensitivity and specificity necessitating only a minimum of sample clean-up. Endosulfan-specific antibodies were developed in rabbits by using a bovine serum albumin(BSA) conjugate wherein the alcohol form of endosulfan was multiply bound to the protein via succinylation. Produced antibodies showed the high titers to endosulfan-BSA(1 : 32,000). An RIA method was developed in water and carp by using $^{14}C-labeled$ endosulfan as a tracer. The lowest detection amount of endosulfan was 1 ng in the liver, kidneys, gut and water samples, and 3 ng in the whole body sample of carp without any clean-up, corresponding to 0.1 ppb of endosulfan.

  • A Korean air dispersion modeling software, AirMaster, was developed on a basis of dispersion theories adopted in U.S. EPA's ISC3 (Industrial Source Complex - version 3) model to assess the air quality impact from the stacks. Key characteristics of AirMaster are as follows: 1) The building downwash effect can be easily simulated; 2) The screen, long term, and short term models can be run independently; 3) The input data to run the model such as meteorological and terrain data are supplied automatically from the databases in AirMaster; and 4) The modeling procedure is easy and simple under the GUI window environment. In order to validate AirMaster, comparisons with ISC3 model and Indianapolis tracer experiment were carried out. It was shown that AirMaster was identical to ISCST3 and ISCLT3 models in predicting the 1 hr to annual concentrations from the stack under various stack emission and meteorological conditions. The 1 hr concentrations predicted by AirMaster also showed a good agreement with the Indianapolis tracer measurements.

  • A conservative finite-volume numerical method for unstructured grids with the cell-centered method has been developed for computing flow and heat transfer by combining the attractive features of the existing pressure-based procedures with the advances made in unstructured grid techniques. This method uses an integral form of governing equations for arbitrary convex polyhedra. Care is taken in the discretization and solution procedure to avoid formulations that are cell-shape-specific. A collocated variable arrangement formulation is developed, i.e. all dependent variables such as pressure and velocity are stored at cell centers. For both convective and diffusive fluxes the forms superior to both accuracy and stability are particularly adopted and formulated through a systematic study on the existing approximation ones. Gradients required for the evaluation of diffusion fluxes and for second-order-accurate convective operators are computed by using a linear reconstruction based on the divergence theorem. Momentum interpolation is used to prevent the pressure checkerboarding and a segregated solution strategy is adopted to minimize the storage requirements with the pressure-velocity coupling by the SIMPLE algorithm. An algebraic solver using iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient method is used for the solution of linearized equations. The flow analysis code (PowerCFD) developed by the present method is evaluated for its application to several 2-D structured-mesh benchmark problems using a variety of unstructured quadrilateral and triangular meshes. The present flow analysis code by using unstructured grids with the cell-centered method clearly demonstrate the same accuracy and robustness as that for a typical structured mesh.
