  • This paper describes two methods which generate all the prime implicants (PI's) quickly by using the directions of adjacency tavle (DA-table) that gives the knowledge of adjacency relations among the given minterms. One is a graphical method that enables us to generate PI's by hand, the other is a checking method that determines the existance of PI's quickly when it is programmed on a digital computer. And a fast minimization algorithm will be shown in this paper that can be implemented with reduced computational effort by selecting essential prime implicants (EPI's) first of all and using the concept of the integration of the PI identification and selection procedure. The procedure, proposed in this paper, has all the advantage of Karnaugh mapping, so the procedure is simple and easy.

  • A simple and efficient vibration analysis procedure for stiffened panels with openings and arbitrary boundary conditions based on the assumed mode method is presented. Natural frequencies and modes are determined by solving an eigenvalue problem of a multi-degree-of-freedom system matrix equation derived by using Lagrange's equations of motion, where Mindlin theory is applied for plate and Timoshenko beam theory for stiffeners. The effect of stiffeners on vibration response is taken into account by adding their strain and kinetic energies to the corresponding plate energies whereas the strain and kinetic energies of openings are subtracted from the plate energies. Different stiffened panels with various opening shapes and dispositions for several combinations of boundary conditions are analyzed and the results show good agreement with those obtained by the finite element analysis. Hence, the proposed procedure is especially appropriate for use in the preliminary design stage of stiffened panels with openings.

  • Assembly line balancing problem is known as one of difficult combinatorial optimization problems. This problem has been solved with linear programming, dynamic programming approaches. but unfortunately these approaches do not lead to efficient algorithms. Recently, genetic algorithm has been recognized as an efficient procedure for solving hard combinatorial optimization problems, but has a defect that requires long-run time and computational complexties to find the solution. For this reason, we adapt a new method called the Critical Node Method that is intuitive, easy to understand, simple for implementation. Fuzzy set theory is frequently used to represent uncertainty of information. In this paper, to treat the data of real world problems we use a fuzzy number to represent the duration and Critical Node Method based heuristic procedure is developed for solving fuzzy assembly line balancing problem.

  • The response of a reinforced concrete structure to loading is both immediate and time-dependent. Under a sustained load, the deflections caused by creep and shrinkage may be several times their instantaneous values. The paper describes a general finite element procedure, based on the so-called layered model, to analyse reinforced concrete members, and shows in particular how the simple Step by Step Method may be incorporated into this procedure. By invoking the Modified Newton Raphson Method as a solution procedure, the accuracy of the finite element method is verified against independent test results, and then applied to a variety of problems in order to demonstrate its efficacy. The method forms a general method for analysing highly indeterminate concrete structures in the time domain.

  • A 21 year-old male patient had a diagnosis of Budd-Chiari syndrome caused by inferior vena caval obstruction. Conservative medical therapy failed to control the symptoms of both portal hypertension and inferior vena caval stasis. Portocaval or mesocaval shunts may relive the symptoms of chronic forms of Budd-Chiari syndrome. But when inferior vena caval stenosis is severe, another procedure has to be used. Cavoatrial or portoatrial shunt has been suggested. Therefore, a long Dacron graft was placed from the inferior vena cava just below the left renal vein to the right atrium. He exhibited almost complete relief of symptoms for 1.5 year postoperatively. And there was angiographic proof of patency of the graft. This simple procedure should be encouraged in treatment of these patients.

  • An analytical method is proposed for the evaluation of the static response of a prestresse-dribbon concrete pedestrian bridge, which may also be applied for the roofing of large areas. On the basis of an established analogy with a suspension bridge system, a procedure is presented for the prestresse-dribbon direct analysis, leading to the introduction of two dimensionless parameters as governing factors of the design, namely the thinness and the prestressing steel ratio. The exposed procedure, applied by a simple computer program, allows a quick evaluation of the response and permits the investigation of the influence of the aforementioned parameters on it, by means of comprehensive diagrams. The presented diagrams may be directly used for the preliminary design of a pedestrian bridge of this type, for the whole practical range of span lengths. A design example is also included, showing the applicability of the proposed procedure.

  • Inevitable source-uncertainties in geometry configuration, boundary condition, and material properties may deviate the structural dynamics from its expected responses. This paper aims to examine the influence of these uncertainties on the vibration of functionally graded beams. Finite element procedures are presented for Timoshenko beams and utilized to generate reliable datasets. A prerequisite to the uncertainty quantification of the beam vibration using Monte Carlo simulation is generating large datasets, that require executing the numerical procedure many times leading to high computational cost. Utilizing artificial neural networks to model beam vibration can be a good approach. Initially, the optimal network for each beam configuration can be determined based on numerical performance and probabilistic criteria. Instead of executing thousands of times of the finite element procedure in stochastic analysis, these optimal networks serve as good alternatives to which the convergence of the Monte Carlo simulation, and the sensitivity and probabilistic vibration characteristics of each beam exposed to randomness are investigated. The simple procedure presented here is efficient to quantify the uncertainty of different stochastic behaviors of composite structures.

  • In this paper, I present the technique of subxiphoid single-port video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) thymectomy for thoracic surgeons to perform this procedure safely. This procedure is indicated for all anterior mediastinal masses and may be extended to lung cancer. The patient is placed in the lithotomy position, and the operator should be on the midline. Below the xiphoid process, a skin incision is made 4-5 cm horizontally at a single thumb's width down. Under two-lung ventilation, CO2 is insufflated, maintaining 10 mm Hg. The fat tissue and thymic tissue are all resected from the sternum and pericardium between both phrenic nerves using an articulated grasper and an energy device. After retrieval of the mass with a wrap bag, a Jackson-Pratt drain is inserted instead of a chest tube. One of the advantages of this procedure is less postoperative pain than intercostal VATS. The subxiphoid approach can be used for bilateral pneumothorax, bilateral pulmonary metastasectomy, and simple lobectomy for both upper lobes and the right middle lobe.
