Background: Along with the advances in technology of three-dimensional (3D) printer, it became a possible to make more precise patient-specific 3D model in the various fields including oral and maxillofacial surgery. When creating 3D models of the mandible and maxilla, it is easier to make a single unit with a fused temporomandibular joint, though this results in poor operability of the model. However, while models created with a separate mandible and maxilla have operability, it can be difficult to fully restore the position of the condylar after simulation. The purpose of this study is to introduce and asses the novel condylar repositioning method in 3D model preoperational simulation. Methods: Our novel condylar repositioning method is simple to apply two irregularities in 3D models. Three oral surgeons measured and evaluated one linear distance and two angles in 3D models. Results: This study included two patients who underwent sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and two benign tumor patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy and immediate reconstruction. For each SSRO case, the mandibular condyles were designed to be convex and the glenoid cavities were designed to be concave. For the benign tumor cases, the margins on the resection side, including the joint portions, were designed to be convex, and the resection margin was designed to be concave. The distance from the mandibular ramus to the tip of the maxillary canine, the angle created by joining the inferior edge of the orbit to the tip of the maxillary canine and the ramus, the angle created by the lines from the base of the mentum to the endpoint of the condyle, and the angle between the most lateral point of the condyle and the most medial point of the condyle were measured before and after simulations. Near-complete matches were observed for all items measured before and after model simulations of surgery in all jaw deformity and reconstruction cases. Conclusions: We demonstrated that 3D models manufactured using our method can be applied to simulations and fully restore the position of the condyle without the need for special devices.
Background: The purpose of this study is to assess the range of shoulder motion using an indirect evaluation method without physical examinations of patients based on questionnaires regarding several specific arm postures referenced by patient's own body parts. Methods: Nine criteria of specific shoulder motion including 4 forward flexion, 2 external rotation, and 3 internal rotation were decided as reference position which can represent a certain shoulder motion. Flexion contains postures such as lifting arm to waist-height, shoulder-height, eye-height, and raising arm above head with arm touching ears. External rotation comprises grasping ears and placing hands on back of the head. Vertebral height in internal rotation is determined by calculating the samples' motions, which are holding on to trouser belts, opposite-elbow, and scapula. These postures are included in questionnaires for patients to evaluate the validity and effectiveness of this indirect method. Results: The range of flexion was $77^{\circ}$ ($60^{\circ}$ to $100^{\circ}$), $96^{\circ}$ ($87^{\circ}$ to $115^{\circ}$), $135^{\circ}$ ($115^{\circ}$ to $150^{\circ}$), and $167^{\circ}$ ($150^{\circ}$ to $175^{\circ}$) when arms go up to waist, shoulder, eye, and high vertically. Range of external rotation was $39.6^{\circ}$ ($30^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$) when grasping ears and $69.2^{\circ}$ ($60^{\circ}$ to $80^{\circ}$) with the hands on the back of the head. Range of internal rotation was L4 when placing trouser belts, T12 for holding opposite elbow, and T9 for reaching scapula. The mismatch rates of flexion, external rotation, and internal rotation were 11.6%, 9.6%, and 7.8%. Conclusions: The range of shoulder motion using this method is expected to be applied to an established shoulder scoring system which included shoulder motion evaluation item.

To contribute to the preventive measures against local vibrations of ship's deck panels, some investigations into the prediction method of the natural frequency of the vibration of stiffened plates were done. Firstly, an analytical method based on the orthotropic plate analogy and the Rayleigh method using eigenfunctions of the Euler beam was shown, and numerical results of a regularly stiffened plate were compared with experimental results. And then, the method was extended to stiffened plates having one or two irregular stiffeners to obtain an approximate formula showing the relation between the change of the natural frequency and the size of the irregular stiffeners. The latter case was investigated for the purpose of providing a convenient design manual applicable to cure of local resonant vibrations of ships' deck panels by additional reinforcement of one or two stiffeners. In the analytical development the boundary was assumed to be rigidly supported and elastically restrained against rotation. In the experiment, however, only an extreme case i.e. simply supported boundary was investigated. The results of the investigation show that there is a fairly good conformity between the analytical results and the experimental ones in the first case, and that the approximate formula for the second case is confirmed also to be reliable for the design purpose. Considering that actual boundary conditions of deck panels in ship structures lie mostly somewhere between the simple support and the fixed, the authors discussed problems of the joint efficiency at the boundary of deck panels from the viewpoint of the practical application of the formulae.
For the safe seismic design of buildings, it is necessary to predict the plastic deformation demands of the members as well as the story drift ratio. In the present study, a simple method of estimating the beam plastic rotation was developed for special-moment-resisting steel frame structures designed with strong column-weak beam behavior. The proposed method uses elastic analysis rather than nonlinear analysis, which is difficult to use in practice. The beam plastic rotation was directly calculated based on the results of the elastic analysis, addressing the moment redistribution, the column and joint dimensions, the movement of the plastic hinge, the panel zone deformation, the gravity load, and the strain-hardening behavior. In addition, the rocking effect of the braced frame or core wall on the beam plastic rotation was addressed. For verification, the proposed method was applied to a six-story special-moment frame designed with strong column-weak beam behavior. The predicted plastic rotations of the beams were compared with those that were determined via nonlinear analysis. The beam plastic rotations that were predicted using the proposed method correlated well with those that were determined from the nonlinear pushover analysis.

Human failure event (HFE) dependency analysis is a part of human reliability analysis (HRA). For efficient HFE dependency analysis, a maximum number of minimal cut sets (MCSs) that have HFE combinations are generated from the fault trees for the probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) of nuclear power plants (NPPs). After collecting potential HFE combinations, dependency levels of subsequent HFEs on the preceding HFEs in each MCS are analyzed and assigned as conditional probabilities. Then, HFE recovery is performed to reflect these conditional probabilities in MCSs by modifying MCSs. Inappropriate HFE dependency analysis and HFE recovery might lead to an inaccurate core damage frequency (CDF). Using the above process, HFE recovery is performed on MCSs that are generated with a non-zero truncation limit, where many MCSs that have HFE combinations are truncated. As a result, the resultant CDF might be underestimated. In this paper, a new method is suggested to incorporate HFE recovery into the MCS generation stage. Compared to the current approach with a separate HFE recovery after MCS generation, this new method can (1) reduce the total time and burden for MCS generation and HFE recovery, (2) prevent the truncation of MCSs that have dependent HFEs, and (3) avoid CDF underestimation. This new method is a simple but very effective means of performing MCS generation and HFE recovery simultaneously and improving CDF accuracy. The effectiveness and strength of the new method are clearly demonstrated and discussed with fault trees and HFE combinations that have joint probabilities.
Because ships and offshore structures have very large dimensions and complicated shapes, it is difficult to determine the deformation or internal stress in the structure by simple lab tests. Thus, a rigorous analysis by using the computer simulation technology is essential for obtaining their distortions by considering the entire production process characteristics. The rapid development of computer technology made it possible to analyze the heat transfer phenomena, deformation and phase transformation in the welded joint. For large shell structures, shell elements modeling contributed primarily to this development. But if a welding is done by multi-pass, shell elements whose thickness are unchangeable can hard to describe the local situation. Recently, it was researched how to introduce the imaginary temperature for V grooved multi-layer butt welding in strain-boundary method (a kind of shrinkage methodologies). In the present study, we formulated the imaginary temperature for the double bevel and double V groove by considering the thickness change of each pass through the bead and the thickness directions simultaneously and also demonstrated the feasibility of the formula by applying it to the thermal distortion analysis of the erection process of crane pedestal.
Multiple-input multiple-output systems can achieve a full sum rate (SR) via full duplex (FD). However, its performance is degraded by self-interference (SI) that occurs between the transmitter and receiver at the same node and thus is constrained by error floors. Conversely, half duplex (HD) can avoid the SI albeit at lower spectral efficiency, and the slope of its error curve is determined by the diversity order. In this study, a link selection scheme based on switching between FD and HD is examined as a simple method to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of FD systems. In the proposed link selection algorithm, either FD or HD is selected based on the received minimum distance and signal-to-interference plus noise ratio. Simulation results indicate that the proposed hybrid FD/HD switching system offers significant BER performance improvement when compared with that of the conventional FD and FD based on only the received minimum distance under the same fixed SR. Under relatively sufficient SI cancellation, it is demonstrated to outperform the HD with a diversity advantage in low and medium signal-to-noise ratio region.

Elastomeric O-rings have been the most common seals due to their excellent sealing capacity, and availability in costs and sizes. One of the critical applications of O-ring seals is solid rocket motor joint seal where the operating hot gas must be sealed during the combustion. This has long been a design issue to avoid the system failure. For laterally constrained, squeezed and pressurized condition, deformed shape of O-ring was measured by computed tomography method and CCD laser sensor, compared with numerical calculations. As clearance gap changes, sealing performance had been evaluated on peak contact stresses at top, bottom and side contact surfaces. As clearance gap increases, peak contact stresses and contact widths in top and side contact surfaces increase, and the asymmetry of stress distributions is promoted due to pressure increase. It is suggested that peak stress of bottom contact surface can be approximated by simple superposition of peak ones due to squeeze and pressure. Under pressurized condition, sealing performance is dependent on not peak stresses of bottom and side contact surfaces but that of top.
Domes are architectural and elegant structures which cover a vast area with no interrupting columns in the middle, and with suitable shapes can be also economical. Domes are built in a wide variety of forms and specialized terms are available to describe them. According to their form, domes are given special names such as network, lamella, Schwedler, ribbed, and geodesic domes. In this paper, an optimum topology design algorithm is performed using the enhanced colliding bodies optimization (ECBO) method. The network, lamella, ribbed and Schwedler domes are studied to determine the optimum number of rings, the optimum height of crown and tubular sections of these domes. The minimum volume of each dome is taken as the objective function. A simple procedure is defined to determine the dome structures configurations. This procedure includes calculating the joint coordinates and element constructions. The design constraints are implemented according to the provision of LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistance Factor Design-American Institute of Steel Constitution). The wind loading act on domes according to ASCE 7-05 (American Society of Civil Engineers). This paper will explore the efficiency of various type of domes and compare them at the first stage to investigate the performance of these domes under different kind of loading. At the second stage the wind load on optimum design of domes are investigated for Schwedler dome. Optimization process is performed via ECBO algorithm to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the ECBO in creating optimal design for domes.

This paper presents a computer-based analysis on the thermal shock characteristics of Pb-free solder joints and UBM in flip chip assemblies. Among four types of popular UBM systems, TiW/Cu system with 95.5Sn-3.9Ag-0.6Cu solder joints was chosen for simulation. A simple 3D finite element model was first created only including silicon die, mixture between underfill and solder joints, and substrate. The displacements due to CTE mismatch between silicon die and substrate was then obtained through FE analysis. Finally, the obtained displacements were applied as mechanical loads to the whole 2D FE model and the characteristics of flip chip assemblies were analyzed. In addition, based on the hyperbolic sine law, the accumulated creep strain of Pb-free solder joints was calculated to predict the fatigue life of flip chip assemblies under thermal shock environments. The proposed method for fatigue life prediction will be evaluated through the cross check of the test results in the future work.
