In the analysis of the behavior of a complex structure, it requires much time and cost to analyze its behavior by using shell elements at the early design concept. For the purpose of the decrease of time and cost, many researches have been performed with the intention to analyze its behavior through replacing a shell model by a simple beam model. In the present study, a method is proposed for determining a bending spring stiffness which means the flexibility for applying into the joints of the simple beam model. Geometrically nonlinear analysis is performed through the application of the determined flexibility into joints of the simple beam model. The nonlinear behavior of thin-walled tube shell structure can be described within a little error through the simple beam model with flexible joints.

In this study, an analysis technique using simple beam model for predicting structure crashworthiness of the passenger car side impacted with an angle by another passenger car was investigated. The simple model was composed of major beam-like side structure which carry almost all side impact load. A procedure of component collapse test, calculation of load carrying capability and dynamic simulation was carryed out sequentially. Transient dynamic algorithms and a computer program to simulate deformations and motions of the impacted car was developed. The developed procedure was applied to a 3 door passenger car side impacted with an angle of 75 degree and the analysis results show good agreements with the actual test results.
A simple mechanical model is proposed to demonstrate qualitatively the pancake progressive collapse of multi-storey structures. The impact between two collapsed storeys is simulated using a simple algorithm that builds on virtual mass-spring-damper system. To analyze various collapse modes, columns and beams are considered separately. Parametric studies show that the process of progressive collapse involves a large number of complex mechanisms. However, the proposed model provides a simple numerical tool to assess the overall behavior of collapse arising from a few initiating causes. Unique features, such as beam-to-beam connection failure criterion, and beam-to-column connection failure criterion are incorporated into the program. Besides, the criterion of local failure of structural members can also be easily incorporated into the proposed model.
This paper presents a simplified approach for the design of semi-continuous composite beams in braced frames, where specific attention is given to the effect of joint rotational stiffness. A simple composite beam model is proposed incorporating the effects of semi-rigid end connections and the nonprismatic properties of a 'cracked' steel-concrete beam. This beam model is extended to a sub-frame in which the restraining effects from the adjoining members are considered. Parametric studies are performed on several sub-frame models and the results are used to show that it is possible to correlate the amount of moment redistribution of semi-continuous beam within the sub-frame using an equivalent stiffness of the connection. Deflection equations are derived for semi-continuous composite beams subjected to various loading and parametric studies on beam vibrations are conducted. The proposed method may be applied using a simple computer or spreadsheet program.

Generally, the time history analysis among seismic response analyses of a structure needs more times than static analysis. Therefore the mechanical model of a structure has been used as a simple lumped parameter model in time history analysis. For the most cases, the simple mechanical model shows the similar results to that of detailed finite element model. so it is reasonable to use the simple mode] in preliminary analysis. In seismic design of liquid storage tank, such as LNG storage tank, the lumped parameter mode] also is being used in preliminary analysis, however sometimes shows the differences to the results of detailed finite element model. Therefore in this study, the dynamic characteristics between lumped parameter model and detailed finite model is compared for the variables such as height/diameter of liquid-storage tank and thickness of wall, then the applicability of beam mode] to the seismic response analysis are evaluated for some liquid storage tanks.
A nonlinear analytical model has been proposed for two-span two-story reinforced concrete frames with relaxed section details. The analytical model is composed of beam, column, and beam-column joint elements. The goal of this study is to develop a simple and light nonlinear model for two-dimensional reinforced concrete frames since research in earthquake engineering is usually involved in a large number of nonlinear dynamic analyses. Therefore, all the nonlinear behaviors are modeled to be concentrated on flexural plastic hinges at the end of beams and columns, and the center of beam-column joints. The envelope curve and hysteretic rule of the nonlinear model for each element are determined based on experimental results, not theoretical approach. The simple and light proposed model can simulate the experimental results well enough for nonlinear analyses in earthquake engineering. Consequently, the proposed model will make it easy to developing a nonlinear model of the entire frame and help to save time to operate nonlinear analyses.

Cantilever beam MEMS piezoelectric accelerometers are the simplest and most widely used accelerometer structure. This paper discusses the design of a piezoelectric accelerometer exclusively for SHM applications. While such accelerometers need to operate at a lower frequency range, they also need to possess high sensitivity and low noise floor. The availability of a simple model for deflection, charge, and voltage sensitivities will make the accelerometer design procedure less cumbersome. However, a review of the open literature suggests that such a model has not yet been proposed. In addition, previous works either depended on FEM analysis or only reported on the fabrication and characterization of piezoelectric accelerometers. Hence, this paper presents, for the first time, a simple analytical model developed for the deflection, induced voltage, and charge sensitivity of a cantilever beam piezoelectric accelerometer. The model is then verified using FEM analysis for a range of different cases. Further, the model was validated by comparing the induced voltages of an accelerometer estimated using this model with experimental voltages measured in the accelerometer after fabrication. Subsequently, the design of an accelerometer is demonstrated for SHM applications using the analytical model developed in this work. The designed accelerometer has 60 mV/g voltage sensitivity and 2.4 pC/g charge sensitivity, which are relatively high values compared to those of the piezoresistive and capacitive accelerometers for SHM applications reported earlier.

A simple beam model based on a mixed method is proposed for the analysis of thin-walled composite blades with a two-cell airfoil section. A semi-complementary energy functional is used to obtain the beam force-displacement relations. The theory accounts for the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, warping, and warping restraint. All the kinematic relations as well as the cross-section stiffnesses are evaluated in a closed-form through the current beam formulation. The theory has been applied to two-cell composite blades with extension-torsion couplings and fairly good correlation has been observed in comparison with a detailed analysis and other literature.
In this study, the transverse vibrations of an axially moving flexible beams resting on multiple supports are investigated. The time-dependent velocity is assumed to vary harmonically about a constant mean velocity. Simple-simple, fixed-fixed, simple-simple-simple and fixed-simple-fixed boundary conditions are considered. The equation of motion becomes independent from geometry and material properties and boundary conditions, since equation is expressed in terms of dimensionless quantities. Then the equation is obtained by assuming small flexural rigidity. For this case, the fourth order spatial derivative multiplies a small parameter; the mathematical model converts to a boundary layer type of problem. Perturbation techniques (The Method of Multiple Scales and The Method of Matched Asymptotic Expansions) are applied to the equation of motion to obtain approximate analytical solutions. Outer expansion solution is obtained by using MMS (The Method of Multiple Scales) and it is observed that this solution does not satisfy the boundary conditions for moment and incline. In order to eliminate this problem, inner solutions are obtained by employing a second expansion near the both ends of the flexible beam. Then the outer and the inner expansion solutions are combined to obtain composite solution which approximately satisfying all the boundary conditions. Effects of axial speed and flexural rigidity on first and second natural frequency of system are investigated. And obtained results are compared with older studies.

A simple and useful model of light distribution for the biologhical tissue to the Gaussian beam is proposed. This model assumes that the incident Gaussian beam broadens into two Gaussian beams, travelling in the opposite directions as the result of both isotropic scattering and absorption in the tissue. With this assumption, two-dimensional light intensity of each flux as well as the equations of both absorption and scattering have been derived, and the validity of modeling has been confirmed experimentally. Consequently, the results paved a way for easy evaluation of the light distribution in the biological tissue.
