  • Recently in Korea, the percentage of the population that is elderly has been increasing rapidly because of lower national birthrates, improvements of medical technologies and techniques, and improved diet. The trend toward an aging population has exceeded the capabilities of the existent Korean welfare system and has caused economic problems such as a lack of new jobs. The government's policies in welfare and infrastructure are insufficient. The fire-fighting administration provides special services for the elderly, including "silver ambulances." In addition, using modem technology, the administration is working on emergency contact devices for the elderly in case of accidents. The aim of this paper is to analyze the services provided for the elderly and to examine improved solutions for the fire-fighting administration.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was influence of change of electrical stimulation time on body regions affects on electrical current threshold. Methods: The present study is to examine the effect of silver spike point (SSP) electrical stimulation (1Hz), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS, 100Hz), and interferential current therapy (ICT, 50Hz) from the low back and scapulodorsal and knee joint regions on stimulation-induced current thresholds from the elderly (over sixty) people (male:72, female:91) in senior welfare center. Result: The low back region, but not scapulodorsal and knee joint region, significantly increased the TENS and ICT, but not SSP, electrical stimulation, significantly increased the time-dependent current thresholds in elderly patients. Conclusion: Therefore, these results, in part, suggest that the TENS and ICT were shown to be a more adaptable method of stimulation, and that needed of the development of senile specialized physical therapy and the utilization of senior leisure facilities such as senior welfare center the others.

  • The percentage of senior citizens is increasing in Korea and it is expected to become an "aging society". Problems with the elderly are becoming a big concern, such as physical and mental illness, losing their jobs and having difficulties at home. But, the silver generation, as they are being known, has changed a lot these days. With the aid of medical developments, the elderly's lifespan has become longer, making them more independent and active. Senior Welfare Center's are places where the elderly can spend their golden years in comfort, meaningfully. Senior Welfare Center's these days provide many different programs, which naturally lead to an increase in elderly users. With the rise in welfare centers and users, research on the subject also grew. As this topic has only recently become an issue, there were not many spatial structure studies considering elderly movement. Therefore, there should be spatial structure research that considers older users space awareness and how it can be managed effectively. The goal of this study is to present basic resources for providing a comfortable senior welfare center for elders. This will be based on quantitative analysis derived from spatial structure research along with special construction characteristics based on the institution's general plan. As a research method, Senior Welfare Center's will be categorized into corridor type, hall type, and hybrid types which then be reproduced into a j-graph. Based on this, special structure characteristics and connection links will be comprehended. Then the connection link will be analyzed based on the space syntax result calculated from each type's integration, connectivity, control value, and intelligibility. The analysis result shows that Senior Welfare Center j-graph's average arrangement is hybrid>corridor>hall types. Those elders lacking awareness need easily perceivable spatial structure's and hall type's would be the best choice to increase their awareness as it has high articulation. However, hall type's would be difficult to construct with the size increase, so hybrid type would be the next logical solution. Space with relatively high articulation will need to be planned in hybrid type's where rest areas can be created within the halls in the Welfare Center in connection to its corridors.

  • Considering the current rise in elderly population, institutions and facilities caring for the elderly are currently unable to satify the growing needs of the aged wanting the better qualities of life. Therefore, this study will analyze institutions and policies for the elderly in Japan, which has already experienced the rise in elderly population about 30 years earlier than Korea. Because the living conditions of Japan is somewhat similar to that of Korea, analyzing its solutions, both governmental and private, will help better understand the current situations of Korea and possibly offer guidelines as to better serve the growing demands of the aged. In Japan, the social welfare policies directed at caring for the elderly are mainly directed by the government: however, the private services tend to be more adroit at meeting the ever-changing demands of the elderly. Incidentally, the privately owned elderly homes of Japan are a major part of so called the "Silver Industries". The elderly home that are run by private corporations consititute 50 percent of all private institutions for the elderly. These homes tend tobe situated in a city, or near a city environment, serving 25 to 99 people. The types of such homes can be classified from A to D,E,F, reflecting the various services offered by such homes meeting the various demands by the elderly populatiov. Analyzing the social tred of Japan for theelderly, it can be said that the responsibility of the elderly should not only be relied upon the government, but to the society as whole, both public and private. The ever-changing demands of the elderly, wanting better qualities of life, can be better served by systematic analysis of the demands and the various solutions to such demands. Also, the necessary governmental policies in support of elderly welfare, will be needed.be needed.

  • Recently it has been encouraged in developed countries that labor force participation of the elderly is one of the means to cut down the cost of social welfare for them. However, empirical studies have rarely explored how work in later life contributes to national economy. Especially, even though 56.6 percent of elderly workers aged 65 and older engaged in agriculture and forestry in Korea, their contribution has been socio-economically overlooked. This study aims at examining the effect of farming labor in later life on social welfare expenditure. For this purpose, social welfare expenditure was defined as social benefits provided for the elderly by the social security in public sector and measured as transportation allowance, pension, livelihood aid, medical aid, and health insurance in 2003. Data were obtained from National Health Insurance Cooperation and 37 town/village offices and analyzed by 3 age groups; 65~74, 75~84, and 85 and over using SPSS/PC windows program. Results showed that both livelihood and medical support in all age groups were expended more to non-farm than to farm workers. The amount differences per person between them were 113,959~361,132 won in livelihood support and 15,644~51,418 won in medical support. Also, participation in farming influence reduction of livelihood expenditure for the group 65~74 and 75~84 and that of medical expenditure only for the group 65~74. Based on these results, it was estimated the amount of social welfare expenditure reduced by farming labor in later life. The limit of this study and the policy implications of the results are discussed.

  • Purpose: In this study, we analyzed the correlation between high-caffeine energy drink intake and mental health in high school students. Methods: Analyses were conducted using the data of 27,097 responses from the 2015 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey of general high school students. Data were analyzed by logistic regression based on a complex sample design. Results: High-caffeine energy drink intake was positively correlated with the rates of smoking, alcohol consumption, violence, depression, and suicidal thoughts and negatively correlated with the sense of happiness. Conclusion: High-caffeine energy drink intake has a significant impact on the mental health of high school students. Therefore, in-depth research and policies on high-caffeine energy drink intake and the mental health of young individuals are required.

  • Objective: Despite the increasing number of female participation in employment, blue-collar women have been exposed to higher health risk. This study is to describe the prevalence of chronic diseases, health behaviors, and medical service utilization of female blue-collar workers. Methods: Data were derived from the 2001 Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES). The sample was made up of 37,108 male and female participants aged 20 or over selected nation-wide by probability sampling from Korea. This study applied the logistic regression for nominal variables such as disease prevalence and health behaviors and with the regression for continuos variables such as the length and costs of medical services. Results: In general, women's prevalence of chronic illness and uncured rate were significantly higher than male, and especially female blue-collar workers had the highest prevalence, uncured rate, unhealthy status, and perceived stress. However, the medical care cost was the lowest in female blue-collar workers. Conclusions: The findings suggest that female blue-collar workers were more likely to experience health problems, and that despite the highest health risk, health service is not effectively utilized, and health policy maker should take consider of special status of female blue collar workers who are in health inequality.
