  • Silica hybrid silver nanoparticles showing the strong antimicrobial activity, in which nano-silver is bound to silica molecules, has been synthesized using ${\gamma}-irradiation$ at room temperature. The present study relates to an antimicrobial composition for coating fiber products comprising silica hybrid silver nanoparticles. In this study, we describe antimicrobial fiber products coated with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles and a method of antimicrobially treating fiber products by coating the fiber products with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles. The antimicrobial fiber products exhibited excellent antimicrobial effects. In detailed practice, when the present composition comprising nanosized silica-silver was applied to a cloth (fabric) in a concentration of $6.4mg\;yard^{-1}$, the viable cell number decreased to less than 10 cells before and after laundering, resulting in a reduction of 99.9% or greater in the viable cell number. The present composition displays long-lasting potent disinfecting effects on bacteria. Also, we investigated the toxicity of silica hybrid silver nanoparticles in rats. The skin of rats was treated with a 30 ppm nanoparticles solution ($2ml\;Kg^{-1}$) for 8 days. No toxicity was detected in the treatment. These results suggest that the fiber products coated with the silica hybrid silver nanoparticles can be used to inhibit the growth of various microorganisms.

  • Various etching methods of optical fiber and formation of metal nano particles on the optical fiber have been proposed for fabrication of fiber optic localized surface plasmon resonance (FO LSPR) biosensors. Different types of etched optical fiber are possible by removing the cladding of optical fiber using HF (hydrofluoric acid) solution and BHF (buffered hydrofluoric acid) solution, which results in improved surface roughness when BHF solution is used. Localized surface plasmon can be formed and measured by formation of silver and gold nano particles on the etched optical fiber. The characteristics of the etched optical fiber and metal nano particles on the etched surface of the optical fiber play a key role in dictating the sensitivity of the LSPR sensors, so that the proposed results can be expected to be applied for related research on fiber optic based biosensors.

  • The improvement of electrical conductivity of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) has been investigated by silver nano-particles coating for the purpose of lightning strike protection. Silver nano-particles in colloid were sprayed on the surface of carbon fibers, which were then impregnated by epoxy resin to form a CFRP specimen. Electrical resistance was measured by contact resistance meter which utilize the principles of the AC 4-terminal method. Electrical resistance value was then converted to electrical conductivity. The coated silver nano-particles on the carbon fibers were verified by SEM and EDS. The electrical conductivity was increased by three times of the ordinary CFRP.

  • An addressable conducting network (ACN) makes it possible to monitor the condition of a structure using the electrical resistance between electrodes on the surface of a carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) structure. To improve the damage detection reliability of the ACN, the contact resistances between the electrodes and CFRP laminates needs to be minimized. In this study, silver nanoparticle electrodes were fabricated via printed electronics techniques on a CFRP composite. The contact resistance between the silver electrodes and CFRP were measured with respect to various fabrication conditions such as the sintering temperature of the silver nano-ink and the surface roughness of the CFRP laminates. The interfaces between the silver electrode and carbon fibers were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Based on this study, it was found that the lowest contact resistance of $0.3664{\Omega}$ could be achieved when the sintering temperature of the silver nano-ink and surface roughness were $120^{\circ}C$ and 0.230 a, respectively.

  • In recent years, greatly increased incidences of diseases made people more concerned about their hygienic environment. Since clothes are the closest environment to man, many methods have beef proposed to impart antimicrobial properties to the textiles. Benefits associated with incorporating antimicrobial properties in textiles include protection to the wearer from microbiological attack, and prevention of odor from perspiration. Silver has been known to kill 650 different disease organisms, however, nano-sized silver particles are known as skin friendly and does not cause skin irritation. In this study, we have examined the antimicrobial effects of cotton or polyester fabric, on which nano-sized silver particles were treated. Colloidal silver solution made by electrolysis of $99.9\%$ silver stick was more effective than that by reduction of $AgNO_3.\;0.7\%$ concentration of colloidal silver solution by electrolysis is helpful to give reduction of $99.9\%$ S. aureus and K. pneumoniae on a cotton fabric without the decrease of whiteness. Since the structures of fiber and fabric effect on their antimicrobial property, PET filament fabric didn't have sufficient antimicrobial properly. The fabrics treated with up to $5\%$ colloidal silver solution didn't have the properly of antistatic and electromagnetic shield.

  • The research on electromagnetic shielding has been advanced for military applications as well as for commercial products. Utilizing the reflective properties and absorptive properties of shielding material, the replied signal measured at the rear surface or at the signal source can be minimized. The shielding effect was obtained from materials having special absorptive properties or from structural characteristics such as stacking sequence. Recently researchers studied the electromagnetic properties of nano size particles. In this research {glass fiber}/{epoxy}/{nano particle} composites(GFR-Nano composites), was fabricated using various nano particles, and their properties in electromagnetic shielding were compared. For the visual observation of the nano composite materials, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope) and TEM(Transmission Electron Microscope) were used. For the measurement of electromagnetic shielding, HP8719ES S-parameter Vector Network Analyser System was used on the frequency range of 8 GHz~12GHz. Among the nano particles, carbon black and Multi-Walled Carbon Nano-Tube (MWCNT) revealed outstanding electromagnetic shielding. Although silver nano particles (flake and powder) were expected to have effective electromagnetic shielding due to their excellent electric conductivities, test showed little shielding effect.

  • We examined the antimicrobial effects of the cotton fabrics which were laundered at different conditions and treated with a colloidal silver solution using Staphylococcus aureus. Colloidal silver solution was made from commercial colloidal silver generator by electrolysis. The fabric which was innoculated and washed with water before drying had no more Staphylococcus aureus, but which was innoculated and dried before washing with detergent solution had lower reduction rate. The fabric washed with oxygen bleach did not have an antimicrobial effect, but rinsed with 0.07% fabric softener showed antimicrobial properties. The fabric rinsed with 0.7ppm colloidal silver solution had better antimicrobial effects. As the treating concentration of silver solution increased, the antimicrobial property of the fabric was increased. The fabric treated with 5% silver solution sustained reflectance and whiteness of untreated fabric. The colloidal silver treated fabric lost antimicrobial property after washing because nano-sized silver particles were located on uneven fiber surface without chemical bonding forces.
