  • A study was made to clarify the topographical. and Physical characteristics of ginseng field in terms of soil science and to find the relationship between soil characteristics and ginseng growth, as well as yield of ginseng roots Forty nine farmer's red ginseng field of ginseng growing area were chosen for this study and investigated for two years. The results obtained were as follow. 1. Ginseng fie1ds with high yield which represent the more than 1.8kg of ginseng root per 3.2m2 were found in soil series of Bancheon, Yeongog, Weongog, etc. whose texture were the clay loam to clay soil. On the other hand, ginseng field with low yield were observed in soil series of seogto whose texture was loamy soil with high content of gravels. 2 Soil of ginseng field with high yield had higher content of clay. silt soil moisture and soil pore as compared with soils of low yields. These soil characteristics were positively correlated with stem length stem diameter and root weight of ginseng plsnt and negatively correlated with rate of missing plant 3. The adequate ranges of soil 3 phase from high yield ginseng field were 40 to 50% of solid Phase, 22 to 35% of liquid phase, 25 to 35% of gaseous phase in top soil and 45 to 55% of solid phase. 28 to 30% of liquid phase. 15 to 20% of gaseous phase in subsoil respectively.

  • Arsenic toxicity of rice and the interaction between As and Zn were studied in a greenhouse experiment. The symptom of As toxicity of rice was the growth retardation of tops and roots accompanied by wilting. The toxicity was observed even on the 1 ppm arsenic treated soils. Zinc applictiaon reduced As toxicity but it did not depress the As uptake by rice, while As reduced the Zn uptake by rice. There-fore, the applied Zn apparantly conpensated for the depressed Zn up-take due to As toxicity. Iron deficiency was observed during the experiment, and this was probably due to the relatively high soil reaction, pH of the Crowley silt loam.

  • This study was performed in order to produce the basic data for devising irrigation project and desalinization countermeasure through analyzing salt movement and desalinzation effects. The Desalinization experiments with water management practices were carried out, using the soil samples collected in New Manguem tideland. The changes of electrical conductivity, exchangeable sodium percentage, pH and hydraulic conductivity during the desalinization experiments, and the correlations between various factors influencing desalinization, were analyzed by the statistical method. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows: 1. The sample soils used in this study were salin-sotlic soils with the high electrical conductivity and the high exchangeable sodium percentage, and the soil texture was silt loam. 2. A large amount of the soluble salts was removed in the begining of desalinization experiments. The initial electrical conductivity and the initial exchangeable sodium percentage decreased considerably in the beginning, and were gradually slow in the rate of decrease 3. The value of pH showed a tendency to increase during the desalinization and were little by little slow in the rate of increase, and could be estimated by the regression equation. 4. The initial hydraulic conductivity were raised greatly with gypsum treatment and the penmeability was maintained adequately, The hydraulic conductivity and the leaching time elapsed during the desalinization could be estimated by the regression equation. 5. The water requirement for desalinization with various water management practices could be estimated for a given electrical conductivity, exchangeable sodium percentage, and pH reading respectively.

  • Several soil properties were studied from three young created mitigation wetlands (<10 years old), which were hydrologically comparable in the Piedmont region of Virginia. The properties included soil organic matter (SOM), soil organic carbon (SOC), pH, gravimetric soil moisture, and bulk density ($D_b$). No significant differences were found in the soil properties between the wetlands, except SOM and SOC. SOM and SOC indicated a slight increase with wetland age; the increase was more evident with SOC. Only about a half of SOC variability found in the wetlands was explained by SOM ($R^2$ = 0.499, p < 0.05). The majority of the ratios of SOM to SOC for these silt-loam soils ranged from 2.0 to 3.5, which was higher than the 1.724 Van Bemmelen factor, commonly applied for the conversion of SOM into SOC in estimating the carbon storage or accumulation capacity of wetlands. The results may caution the use of the conversion factor, which may lead to an overestimation of carbon sequestration potentials of newly created wetlands. SOC, but not SOM, was also correlated to $D_b$, which indicates soil compaction typical of most created wetlands that might limit vegetation growth and biomass production, eventually affecting carbon accumulation in the created wetlands.

  • The shortage of agricultural labour due to industrial growth has greatly induced the mechanization in Korean agriculture. However small and scattered land holdings have been the main constraints in the process of mechanization. This paper describes the interrelationships of farm land structure, machinery selection and machinery operation areas. The sandy silt loam irrigated paddy land having single crop a year was selected as a target areas for this study. Machine operation cost is greatly influenced by operation period, plot geometry and operation area. On the improved geometry plots, optimal machine size increases slowly with increase in operation area. Operable area increases due to increased effective machine capacity on better geometry plot. The difference between the effects of operation period and plot geometry is that in the former case, the cost reduction is caused by delay in increase of machine size, whereas in the latter case timeliness cost is reduced by increase ffective capacity. The effect of farmland consolidation is greater on small plots than that on big plots. Increasing wage rates have induced the adoption of more labor saving machinery. Bigger labor saving machines require enlargement of operation area and larger plots through improvement in farm land structure. Machine cost on poor plot geometry increases more rapidly than that on the good plot geometry and as operation area increases machine cost reduces significantly. It is concluded that the development of agricultural mechanization ion Korea will depend on the improvement in farm land structure and enlargement of operation area.

  • A bark comprises about 10 to 20 percents of a typical log by volume, and is generally considered as an unwanted residue rather than a potentially valuable resources. As the world has been confronted with decreasing forest resources, natural resources pressure dictate that a bark should be a raw material instead of a waste. The utilization of the largely wasted bark of genus Pinus, Quercus and Populus grown in korea can be enhanced by Knowing its chemical Properties. Specially, uses of bark in mulching, growing media and soil amendment can be enhanced by knowing pH and C.E.C values. In this paper, an investigative study is carried out on the pH-and C.E.C-values. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. Bark is acid in nature, and pH values of bark varying from 3.3 to 4.7, is lower than that of wood.pH value of Pinus is the lowest. 2. Cation exchange capacity of bark is greater than that of wood, silt loam soil, and wheat straw.CEC of bark is 45.7 meq/100gm in Pinus, 41.8 meq/100gm in populus, 37.8 meq/100gm in Quercus.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the application of the root system as a shore protection material through the measurement of the 개ot growth curve of Salix gracilisyla Miq. depending on the cutting size. As materials and methodology, nine group of cuttings were classified by the length(l0cm, 20cm, 40cm) and the diameter(0.72cmm$\pm$0,02, 0.58cm$\pm$0.02, 0.35cm$\pm$0.02), Each group was stuck to a flooding bed of sandy loam(Sand 60,36%, Silt 28%, Clay 11.64%) on 27th March 2001, After 65 growing days, the weight and length of the newly developed roots, shoots, and leaves were measured and analysed, This was repeated at 99, 129, 159, and 190 growing days. The major findings were as follows. The primary determinant of the root growth rate was on the weight of cutting, The secondary determinant was on the number of growing days. In addition, the dominant dimension of the cutting was the diameter rather than the length, The thicker cutting caused more rapid and stable growth however the longer cutting made the growth of the root slower and more unstable.

  • Uyeki(1928) classified Pinus densiflora into six ecotypes(Northeastem type, Middle-southern flat type, middle-southern upland type, Wibong type, Ankang type, and Geumgang type) based on the pine tree type. The bark color of Geumgang type was ash-brown color on the lower parts of stem and yellowed color on the upper parts of stem. We investigated the physicochemical properties of soil forests to obtain basic data for preservation of exellent pine (Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki). The results were as follows; The soil texture of the Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki forests were showed nearly as sandy loam, that is, sand, silt and clay were consisted of 72%, 15% and 13%, respectively. Soil acidity(pH 4.6) was lower than Korea average forest soil acidity(pH 5.2). The average contents of available phosphate was 11.7ppm at Sokwang-ri, 26.8ppm at Mt. Eungbong, 24.2ppm at Mt. Kumma. It was the lowest at Uljin(4.6ppm). The contents of carbon was 6.2% at Mt. Chungok, 6.1% at Mt. Eungbong. This value was more than average of Korea forest soil.

  • This research was conducted to develop spraying cultivation method using forest topsoils in order to restore the disturbed slopes. In November the researcher collected a depth of 5 cm of topsoils from a well developed forest, after the fallen leaves were cleared. The essential results of the research are as follows: In the case of using the forest topsoils, during the early stages of planting, time is necessary for the desired vegetation to reach a similar state to the vegetation being restored. The best possible effect is obtained through a method utilizing forest topsoil(30%)+loam silt soil(70%)+seeding with grasses and native plants including trees, shrubs, and herbs. Several plants such as Pinus densiftora, Potentilla fragarioides, Miscanthus sinensis, Erigeron canadensis seemed to be naturally emerged from the topsoils From this experiment, it was recommended that environment potential within topsoil should be comprehended. Also, topsoil deposit and gathering methods should be experimented properly.
