In order to systematically and scientifically manage the organic and heavy metals against sediment at Daecheon Port, this study conducted particle composition, organic materials and heavy metals irradiation studies of sediments. Analysis of the grain size composition of sediments in the target study area showed the distribution characteristics of the mix of sand, silt and clay. That is, Station C (Stn. C) showed superior by fine-grained sediment, Station A and B (Stn. A and B) showed superior by coarse-grained sediment. The organic matter(COD, TOC, and IL) of Stn. C was appeared to be heavily polluted more than Stn. A and B. These data for the spatial properties in sediment showed that organic matter was related positively to the sediment silt-clay content. Also, in the case of heavy metals contamination in surface sediments, Stn. C was higher than Stn. A and B. Particularly, at the Stn. C, high organic matter concentration and C/N ratio value( >10) indicated that the sediment was composed highly of land-derived organic matter. From these results, it considered that the correlation analysis among to silt-clay, organic matter and heavy metal was found to have a good interrelationship.
Soil moisture is an important factor for the availability and circulation of nutrients in arable soil. The purpose of this study was to set thresholds moisture content on soil nitrate concentration in the solution for real-time diagnosis. Sandy loam, silt loam, and sandy loam was filled with $1.2g\;cm^{-3}$ at Wagner pots, 0, 100, and $200mg\;L^{-1}$ of $KNO_3$ was saturated. Nitrate in standard solution was recovered about 95% by passing the porous cup. Nitrate concentrations in sampling of soil solution were examined by using a porous cup. The soil solution was higher in accordance with sandy loam> silt loam> clay loam, limited water filled pore space for sampling soil solution was 33.7, 56.4, and 62.2%, respectively. Nitrate concentration in the soil solution was negligible at sandy loam and silt loam during sampling periods, which was decreased about 50~82% in clay loam compared to the initial $NO_3$-N concentration in the saturated $KNO_3$ solution. Over limitation of soil solution sampling, soil EC and $NO_3$-N content were increased with the saturated $NO_3$-N concentration, regardless of soil texture (p<0.05). Conclusively, soil solution by using a porous cup was possible, regardless of the soil texture, which was useful for the diagnosis in nitrate concentration of soil solution. However, because nitrate concentration of soil solution in a clay loam changes, it was necessary for careful attention in order to take advantage for the real-time diagnosis of nitrogen management in soil.
Mineral and geochemical analysis were conducted on two sections (~3.5 m) of red-brown claysilt sediments covering the gneiss and granite weathering zones in Suwon-si for establishing Quaternary paleoenvironmental changes in Korea. The sections were divided into four sedimentary layers (Unit 1-4) by vertical changes in mineral composition and chemical composition. The lowermost unit 1 was a sandy sediment with a high K-feldspar content with a significant contribution of weathered bedrock. Unit 2 was a transition layer showing intermediate characteristics. Unit 3 was a reddish brown clay-silt sediment, with a total clay content of 58% on average, and the main clay minerals were illite-smectite mixed layer minerals and hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite/smectite. Unit 3 contained almost no plagioclase, while the content of kaolin minerals derived by the plagioclase weathering was higher than in the other layers. Unit 4 had similar mineral composition and chemical properties to Unit 3, but had a higher content of plagioclase and chlorite and lower content of kaolin minerals. The chemical compositions of the sections were compared with those in other regions of Korea, suggesting the eolian origin of Units 3 and 4. The paleoenvironmental change in the sedimentary section of this region was interpreted as follows. Weathered products of gneiss and granite, which are bedrocks of this region, were eroded and deposited as sandy sediments in the periphery to form the lower layers (Unit 1, 2), followed by the deposition of the claysilty rich eolian sediments (Unit 3) during the glacial. Unit 3 was chemically weathered during the warm humid climate during the last interglacial, developing a reddish brown color. After that, a eolian sediment layer (Unit 4) was deposited during the last glacial.
In order to discuss the differences among the SMP(Surface Moisture Availability Parameter), by previous researchers on the basis of their own theoretical and empirical background, we assessed the SMP according to the soil types and volumetric soil water contents. The results are as follows. There are differences among all the five SMAPs. There's a tendency that the larger grain size, the higher value of parameters. And they divided into two groups for their value: one group has parameters with exponential function and the other with cosine and linear function. The maximum difference between the two groups appears when the volumetric soil water contents are 0.07m3m-3 for sand, 0.l1m3m-3 for loam, 0.12 for clay, and 0.13m3m-3 for silt loam. So, these differences must be considered when we estimate the surface evaporation rate. From field data, the paddy field soil around Junam reservoir is classified as a silt has high wetness, 0.56. So, the parameter obtained from the field measurement is much higher than that of Clapp and Hornberger(1978)'s Table. This study treated the SMP for a certain point of time in winter season. But if we measured the soil water contents continuously, we could obtain better time-dependent parameter. Key words : SMAP(Surface Moisture Availability Parameter), Paddy field, Volumetric soil water content, Evaporation, Capillary potential.
Depositional environment off the Shihwa Dam has been studied to investigate the change of sedimentation process and the pollution. In order to understand how the sediments are distributed, polluted and modified, depositional factors have been analyzed and compared with the previous data. Study area, located off the Shihwa Dam, was surveyed to collect 25 bottom samples and 2 cores in 1996 and echo-sounding in 1997. These sediments were analyzed for the study of the global characteristics of sediment such as grain size and organic matter. Among these samples, the selected twenty surface sediments were analyzed for the comparison with their contents of metallic elements (Al, Mn, Fe, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, As). According to field and lab analysis of sediments, three sedimentological zones have been generally identified around study area; near the dam (sandy Silt), near the dike (Sand) and offshore (silty Sand) zones. Textural parameters show that the content of silt and clay is dominant near the dam excepting the dike zone of LNG Storage Base and offshore (Palmido). The total concentration of Mn, Ni, Fe, Zn and Cd in bulk sediments was increased after the construction of the dam, while the content of Mn and Cr were higher near tidal channel than in the offshore area. Meanwhile, the annual increasing pattern of some heavy metal has appeared in this area. Based on this primary study, modification of the depositional environment may be caused by the construction of the dam and LNG Storage Base. Additionally, environmental evaluation on organic/inorganic factors has been suggested for interpreting environmental changes caused by coastal development in the nearshore such as the Shihwa coastal area.
Background: Salt marshes provide a variety of ecosystem services; however, they are vulnerable to human activity, water level fluctuations, and climate change. Analyses of the relationships between plant communities and environmental conditions in salt marshes are expected to provide useful information for the prediction of changes during climate change. In this study, relationships between the current vegetation structure and environmental factors were evaluated in the tidal flat at the southern tip of Ganghwa, Korea, where salt marshes are well-developed. Results: The vegetation structure in Ganghwa salt marshes was divided into three groups by cluster analysis: group A, dominated by Phragmites communis; group B, dominated by Suaeda japonica; and group C, dominated by other taxa. As determined by PERMANOVA, the groups showed significant differences with respect to altitude, soil moisture, soil organic matter, salinity, sand, clay, and silt ratios. A canonical correspondence analysis based on the percent cover of each species in the quadrats showed that the proportion of sand increased as the altitude increased and S. japonica appeared in soil with a relatively high silt proportion, while P. communis was distributed in soil with low salinity. Conclusions: The distributions of three halophyte groups differed depending on the altitude, soil moisture, salinity, and soil organic matter, sand, silt, and clay contents. Pioneer species, such as S. japonica, appeared in soil with a relatively high silt content. The P. communis community survived under a wider range of soil textures than previously reported in the literature; the species was distributed in soils with relatively low salinity, with a range expansion toward the sea in areas with freshwater influx. The observed spatial distribution patterns may provide a basis for conservation under declining salt marshes.

Increasing national concern on nonpoint source pollution of surface and ground water Systems has led researchers and policy makers to develop certain agricultural Best Management Practices. As an initial step of broad study program above mentioned, this study reflected the effects of different tillage practice on bulk density and degree of saturation on two regional soils, namely Tama silt loam and Catlin silt loam. Results may help to clarify some of the conflicting findings on the impact of tillage systems on these parameters and it may also explain some of the reasons for specific role that different tillage systems play regarding nonpoint source pollution from agricultural fields.
This study was conducted to establish the statistic model by use the soil physico-chemical properties for prediction of ginseng root yield. Twenty seven farmer's red ginseng fields from the ginseng growing area were chosen for this study. Root yield of 6-year old ginseng was $1.85{\pm}0.54Kg$ per $3.3m^2$, and it showed positive correlation between yield and porosity, content of clay, clay and silt, organic matter, cation exchange capacity of the field soils, respectively, but showed a negative correlation with available phosphate. Prediction of root yield was possible with equation combined with porosity($X_1$), content of clay($X_2$), clay and silt($X_3$), available phosphate($X_4$), CEC($X_5$), the equation is $Y=-1.175+0.033X_1-0.04X_2+0.012X_3-0.001X_4+0.171X_5$. Standard partial regression coefficients were 0.3799 in CEC, 0.1550 in content of clay, 0.0890 in porosity, 0.0599 in content of clay silt, and -0.0138 in available phosphate.
This study was initiated to obtain the scientific information for the improvement of paddy soil. Mean values and mutual relationships of bulk density, pH values and the content of organic matter were investigated at the 124 field sites shown to be nationwide high-yielding, young seedling field s and their neighboring fields under the different soil textures and depths. The soil samples were collected and those samples were analyzed in the laboratory of Agricultural Sciences Institute. Mean values among the different soil textures and depths were estimated with loam-textured. Bulk density were significantly correlated with sand and silt in topsoil, and that were appeared to be correlated to sand, silt + clay, pH and content of organic matter highly significant in 1% level. Regression equation of soil bulk density(Y) to clay(C), orgnic matter (OM) and content of silt + clay(S+C) were as follows for the topsoil, Y=1.365+0.006C-0.003(S+C)~0.034OM (R=0.067*), and for the subsoil, Y=1.548 -0.002C-0.0007 (S+C) -0.036OM (R=0.122**).
This study has been carried out to investigate the translocation-illuviation status of iron and manganese, which are striking phenomena in paddy soils, in relation to its morphological characteristics, and to find out a method to identify illuvial layer of iron quantitatively. Determination of active iron and easily reducible manganese content in surface soils of lowland paddy (266 samples) in Korea were conducted. The examination has been made on relationship between morphological, physico-chemical properties of the representative paddy soils (9 series) and iron and manganese content of their horizons. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The poorer the drainage, the higher concentration of active iron and easily reducible manganese were found, and under same drainage condition, the more the sand, the lower the content of them. 2. Irrespective of soil texture and drainage, highly signignificant positive correlation was found between the contents of active iron ($\hat{Y}$) and clay plus silt in surface soils. $$\hat{Y}=0.3929+(0.05352\;X\;clay%)+(0.0001023\;X\;silt%){\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;I$$ No correlation, however, was found between clay content and easily reducible manganese concentration. 3. Significant positive correlation was obtained between active iron ($\hat{Y}$) and total iron (x) content in each profiles of all soil series. Obtained regression equation is as follows; $$\hat{Y}=0.361x-0.480(r=0.651^{**}){\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;II$$ On the other hand, easily reducible manganese concentration had a tendency to increase, not significantly, with increasing total manganese concentration. 4. Accumulation of iron and manganese generally can be found in paddy soils, but distinct accumulation was found under moderately well drained fine loamy and clay soils, while surface accumulation occurred under poor drainage without regard to soil texture. 5. Profile description or determination of active iron in each horizon were found to be insufficient to designate illuvial layer of iron. Therefore, identification of illuvial layer of iron based on the ratio of total iron and active iron, and concentration of active iron estimated by the content of clay plus silt (Equation 1 above) was thought to be reasonable. Also, manganese accumulation layer would be estimated by total manganese and easily reducible manganese content and their ratio.
