  • A rapid and efficient method for analyzing the nonionic surfactants and silicone polymers, which control the shape and characteristics of cosmetic products and give influence on product quality, has been developed using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI- TOF IMS). The MALDI-TOF/MS could easily and effectively determine the molecular weight distribution and monomer units of nonionic surfactants. As a result, creating a library of mass spectrum data of surfactants used in cosmetic products using MALDI-TOF/MS and analyzing surfactants extracted from the products may become a useful method for detailed structural characterization of the surfactants. Furthermore, the MALDI-TOF/MS analysis was effective in obtaining the spectrum of silicone polymers from which the molecular weight distribution could be determined. The repetition units and structural data could also be obtained through molecular mass peaks. Additionally, the monomer ratio and terminal groups as properties of silicone copolymers could be determined

  • Three different silicone polymer systems, such as aminofunctional, epoxyfunctional, and hydrophilic epoxyfunctional silicone polymers, were applied onto plasma pretreated wool fabric to improve the dimensional properties. The results showed that the plasma pretreatment modified the cuticle surface of the wool fiber and increased the reactivity of wool fabric toward silicone polymers. Felting shrinkage of plasma and silicone treated wool fabric was decreased with different level depending on the applied polymer system. Fabric tear strength and hand were adversely affected by plasma treatment, but these properties were favorably restored on polymer application. Therefore, it has been concluded that the combination of plasma and silicone treatments can achieve the improved dimensional stability, and better performance properties of wool fabric. The surface smoothness appearances of treated fabrics were measured using a new evaluation system, which showed good correspondence with the results of KES-FB4 surface tester.

  • Silicone resin has no water-absorbing function because it is a strong hydrophobic polymer. However, addition of super absorbent polymer gives much better absorbency than that of conventional silicone resin. In this study, we developed novel silicone materials with water-absorbing function by choosing three types of amorphous acrylic super absorbent polymers with different particle sizes, determining the mixing ratio of the three polymers and applying the mixtures into two-component type silicone material for medical purpose. The change in the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, compressive strength and hardness was investigated by varying the particle size and content ratio of the added super absorbent polymers while preparing the silicone resins. The absorbency of the silicone resins was measured over time. Additionally, the particle shape of the super absorbent polymers as well as the distribution within the silicone resin was observed using an optical microscope.

  • Silicone rubber is widely used in most industries due to diverse advantages like heat stability, UV stability, durability, chemical resistance, environment friendliness, inertness and so on. But there is limitation to expand applications due to relatively weak rubber strengths such as tensile strength and tear strength, especially in fabric coating applications. The purpose of this study is to find influence of coating agent on performances of rubber and coated fabrics and their correlation according to different crosslinking densities of silicone rubbers. Addition cure type of silicones were formulated using crosslinked MQ-type silicone resin consisting of M (R3SiO1/2) and Q (SiO4/2) and linear polymers. Raw materials used were; 1) linear vinyl endblocked polymers and vinyl functional MQ resin as main polymers, 2) linear silicone hydride polymers as crosslinkers, 3) platinum catalyst and 4) inhibitor to control curing speed. Rubber specimens were prepared to check mechanical strength using universal testing machine (UTM). Crosslinking density was calculated using Flory-Rhener equation using solvent swelling method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDS) were used to characterize rubbers. Consequently, it was found that physical properties of silicone rubbers and coated fabrics can be expected by crosslinking density of rubbers. Silicone rubber formulations that contain 20 ~ 30 wt% of vinyl MQ resin showed strongest balanced performances.

  • Silicone rubbers are first silicone polymers and has named silicone from existence of Si-O bond similar to Keton. Silicon in organic compound has been called silicone, and linear or network polymers. Silicone rubbers have been used as an power insulator because they are well weather proof, ozone proof and have excellent electric characteristics, thermal stability, cold resistance and low surface energy. Especially, it is known that they have very excellent characteristics at 200[$^{\circ}C$]. For this study, we made silicone rubbers as specimens and we measured dielectric loss tangent due to applied voltage at temperature range 25[$^{\circ}C$] to 180[$^{\circ}C$] and frequency range 20[Hz] to 1${\times}$10$\^$6/[Hz] to examine dielectric properties. We measured dielectric loss tangent to study the insulation performance of silicone rubbers.

  • Silicone dioxide absorbed polyoxyethylene alkylether sulfate (EU-S133D) surfactant was prepared. Core-shell polymers of inorganic/organic pair, which have both core and shell component, were synthesized by sequential emulsion polymerization using Acrylate as a shell monomer and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. We found that when Acrylate core prepared by adding 2.0 wt% EU-S133D, silicone dioxide/Acrylate core-shell polymerization was carried out on the surface of silicone dioxide particle without forming the new silicone dioxide particle during acrylate shell polymerization in the inorganic/organic core-shell polymer preparation. The structure of core-shell polymer were investigated by measuring to the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer and morphology of latex by scanning electron microscope(SEM).

  • Polymers in cosmetics are used to deliver desired attributes to skin and hair. Precisely constructed block and graft copolymers widen the range of available mechanical properties and compatibilities. Stimuli responsive hydrophobic polymers can be triggered to become hydrophilic by changes in their environment and this can confer waterproof properties at low temperature and easy water removal at higher temperatures. Transfer-resistant cosmetics can be possible due to silicone resins. The control of rheology properties in cosmetics gradually continue to be easy with copolymers. Durability of colors and fragrances for rinse-off products can be enhanced by delivery systems from complex coacervates. Polymeric anti-microbials promise product preservation while minimizing the concern of skin permeation. This article reviews recent trends in the use of polymers in cosmetics.
