  • Waterborne polyurethane(WPU) was synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), poly(tetramethylene glycol)(PTMG), dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA), triethylamine(TEA), ethylenediamine(EDA) and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane(APS) as a coupling agent. Subsequently, WPU/silica nanocomposites with different silica contents(0 to 8 wt%) were prepared by performing sol-gel reactions with tetraethylorthosilicate in the WPU matrix. The average particle size of the nanocomposite solutions increased with increasing TEOS content. Also, the prepared nanocomposites showed better thermal stability than pure WPU.

  • Present work deals three families of $SiO_2$ gelling agents which have been used to produce gel fuel based on Kerosene. Jet A-1 is chosen as fuel where power-law rheological model is used to confirm whether or not the gelification is achieved depending on the %wt of gellant. It was confirmed that the produced jelly-like substance have shear-thinning effect, and that its apparent viscosity increases as $SiO_2$ concentration increases. Compared to other gellants, gel with Aerosil(R) R972 fits most to the power-law model, while gels with Silica 230 and Silica 530 deviate from the power-law model. The rheological characteristics behaved differently depending on the mixing method(vortex mixing and manual mixing) when gellant concentration is increased.

  • Neat chlorosulfonic acid reacts with silica gel to give silica sulfuric acid in which sulfuric acid is immobilized on the surface of silica gel via covalent bond. A combination of silica sulfuric acid and wet SiO$_2$ was used as an effective deacetalizating agent for the conversion of acetals to their corresponding carbonyl derivatives by using microwave irradiation under solvent free conditions.

  • To reduce shrinkage and the possibility of fracture during ambient pressure drying, it is of great importance to increase the strength and stiffness of the wet gels. In this paper is presented the strengthening and stiffening of wet silica gels prepared from sodium silicate (water glass) as well as properties of the corresponding xerogels. By washing gels containing different initial silica contents in water solutions at elevated pH, a maximum in shear modulus of ~4 MPa was obtained. The maximum stiffness enabled xerogels with bulk density of 0.28g/$\textrm{cm}^3$ to be made regardless of silica content and washing conditions. However, by aging the wet gels in a solution providing fresh monomers to the gel network, a shear modulus of 20 MPa was obtained after 27h. By this method monolithic xerogels with a density down to ~0.2g/$\textrm{cm}^3$ was prepared. The results are compared to alkoxide based gels.

  • Among ceramic membranes developed to date, amorphous silica membranes are attractive for gas separation at elevated temperatures. Most of the silica membranes can be formed on a porous support by sol-gel or chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. To improve gas permselectivity of the membrane, well-controlled pores having desired size and chemical affinity between permeates and membrane become important factors in the preparation of membranes. In this article, we review the literature and introduce our technologies on the microstructure to be solved and pore size control of silica membranes using sol-gel and CVD methods.

  • The acetylene black/silica composite particles were prepared by a simple and fast method using polyethylenimine (PEI) as a coupling agent. The composite particles were produced via the following two steps; adsorption of PEI on the surface of acetylene black particles and synthesis of silica by sol-gel process. The morphology of the composite particles was a core-shell, and a large number of micropores was created after silica was synthesized on the acetylene black surface.

  • Silica aerogels are attracting attention due to certain outstanding properties such as low bulk density, low thermal conductivity, high surface area, high porosity, high transparency and flexibility. Due to these extraordinary properties of aerogels, they have become a promising candidate in thermal superinsulation. The silica-based aerogels are brittle in nature, which constrains their large scale-application. It is necessary to achieve transparency and flexibility of silica-based aerogels at the same time and with the same porous structure for optical field applications. Therefore, the present review focuses on the different sol-gel synthesis parameters and precursors in the synthesis of flexible as well as transparent silica aerogels. Also, a brief overview of reported flexible and transparent aerogels with some important properties and applications is provided.

  • Hardness and surface property of coated gel materials are considerably different according to kinds(particle size/stabilized ion) of colloidal silica(CS), kinds of silanes, content ratio of silane versus CS, and reaction degree in sol solution. We report the properties of sol-gel coating materials in which the factors of reaction are kinds of CS, contents ratio of CS and MTMS, and reaction time of sol. The contact angles of the coated films obtained from the mixed CS system showed a little good relationship with MTMS content increase to those from HSA CS reaction system and the change of contact angle didn't have much effect on reaction time of sol. In the coating films obtained from HSA CS reaction system, the surface was much rough in case of that the content MTMS decreased and the reaction of sol kept long. The surface roughness of films obtained from the mixed CS reaction system showed similar tendency, though its degree was a little different. In synthesis of sol-gel coating materials, we could identify that choice of CS kinds and content ratio of CS and silane were important and it was desirable the reaction time of sol is not long.

  • From the formation of the monodispersed silica particle which is a valuable for the industry by Sol-Gel process, the effects of the parameters participated in the process, the growth mechanism and the characteristics of silica particles for each rection conditions are investigated. To investigate about the formation of final silica particles, the suspension which performs the polymerization is reacted with molybdic acid, and the evolutions of TEOS and silica particle size are investigated in the reaction time ? 새 the characteristics of molybdic acid with the suspension. From the results, a constant number of silica particle is formed at early reaction stage. Silica particles grow through the aggregation of smaller particles and nucleation is rate-limiting step for the growth of particles. In the conditions of this study, spherical silica particles are formed, [NH$_3$] and [$H_2O$] concentration increase the particle size but particle size decrease with [$H_2O$] concentration which is a certain above region. Average particle sizes are 187.4~483.3 nm and standard deviations in the average particle size are 1.7~2.9% with each experimental condition. From the BET results, specific surface area is 5.5~23.4 $m^2$/g and these values decrease with increase size. The average pore size is 50~70$\AA$.
