  • This paper focuses on thermal properties of a newly prepared composite material by nano-silica and micro-silica mixture. Nano-silica and micro-silica mixture composites were made by dispersing surface treated nano-silica(average radius: 10 nm) and micro-size silica in epoxy resin. To investigate the effects of nano-silica and micro-size silica mixture(ENMC), the glass transition temperature (Tg), coefficients of thermal expansion(CTE) and elastic modulus of DMA properties by DSC, TMA and DMA devices were measured for the ENMC according to increase nano-silica addition contents and EMC. All properties of the neat epoxy were improved by the addition of micro-silica, which was improved much further by the addition of surface treated nano-silica to the EMC system.

  • In this study, an experiment in the field was performed to analyze the mechanical properties and the influence of steel fiber and silica fume on the rebound ratios of shotcrete. The experimental parameters which are the reinforcing methods (steel fiber, wire mesh), steel fiber contents (0.0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%), silica fume contents (0.0%, 10.0%), layer thickness (60 mm, 80 mm, 100 mm), and the placing parts (sidewall, shoulder, crown) were chosen. From the mechanical test, it was found that the flexural strength and toughness is significantly improved by the steel fiber and/or silica fume. According to the results for the side wall in this test, the larger the fiber contents are in case of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete, the less the rebound ratios are within the range of 20-35%, compared to the wire mesh reinforced shotcrte. And also, the reduced rebound ratios were very larger in using steel fiber reinforced shotcrete with silica fume content of 10%, and these results are true of the shoulder and the crown. respectively.

  • Emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber silica wet masterbatch (ESBR silica WMB) technology was studied to develop highly filled and highly dispersed silica compounds, involving the preparation of a composite by co-coagulating the modified silica and the rubber latex in a liquid phase. Previous studies have shown that when manufacturing ESBR silica WMB/Butadiene silica dry masterbatch (BR silica DMB) blend compounds, preparing BR silica dry masterbatch and mixing it with ESBR silica WMB gave excellent results. However, WMB still has the problem of lower crosslink density due to residual surfactants. Therefore, in this study, tetrabenzylthiuram disulfide (TBzTD) was added instead of diphenyl guanidine (DPG) in the ESBR silica WMB/BR silica DMB blend compounds and sulfur/CBS contents were increased to evaluate their cure characteristics, crosslink densities, mechanical properties, and dynamic viscoelastic properties. TBzTD was found to be more effective in increasing the crosslink density and to produce superior properties compared to DPG. In addition, with increasing sulfur/CBS contents, mechanical properties and rolling resistance were enhanced due to high crosslink density, but the abrasion resistance was not significantly changed because of the toughness.

  • As regulations on greenhouse gas emission have strengthened globally, the demand for improved fuel efficiency in automobiles continues to rise. In response, the tire industry is actively conducting research to improve fuel efficiency by enhancing tire performance. In this study, silica-filled epoxidized natural rubber (ENR)/butadiene rubber (BR) blend compounds were manufactured according to ENR types and silica contents, and their physical properties and vulcanizate structure were evaluated. ENR-50, which has a higher epoxide content than ENR-25, exhibited stronger filler-rubber interaction, resulting in superior abrasion resistance. In addition, because of its high glass transition temperature (Tg), the wet grip performance of ENR-50 improved, even though the rolling resistance increased. Increasing the amount of silica had little effect on the abrasion resistance due to the increase in filler-rubber interaction and decrease in toughness. In addition, ENR-50 exhibited better wet grip performance; however, the rolling resistance increased. The results indicated that truck bus radial (TBR) tire tread compounds can be designed by applying ENR-50 to improve wear resistance and wet grip performance. In addition, by applying ENR-25 and reducing the silica contents improve fuel efficiency.

  • Sol-gel method was utilized to prepare SPEEK/PWA electrolyte composite membranes. TEOS was used as a precursor and phosphotungstic acid(PWA) as a catalyst for the sol-gel reaction. It was observed through FE-SEM analysis that the PWA and silica nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed into the polymer matrix. The water uptake of SPEEK/PWA/silica composite membranes was less affected by TEOS concentration at higher TEOS contents, while the water uptake decreased as TEOS concentration increased at lower TEOS contents. The proton conductivity of the composite membranes showed similar trend as the water uptake of the composite membranes. The methanol permeability of SPEEK/PWA/silica composite membranes decreased as TEOS concentration increased.

  • In this study, the effect of metakaoline and silica fume on the bond performances of structural polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber in cement mortar, including bond strength, interface toughness, and microstructure analysis are presented. Metakaoline and silica fume contents ranging from 0 % to 15 % are used in the mix proportions. Pullout tests are conducted to measure the bond performance of PVA fiber from cement mortar. Test results showed the incorporation of metakaoline and silica fume can effectively enhance the PVA fiber-cement mortar interfacial properties. Bond strength and interface toughness increased with metakaoline and silica fume content up to 10 % in cement mortar and decreased when the metakaoline and silica fume content reached 15 %. The microstructural observation confirms the findings on the interface bond mechanism drawn from the fiber pullout test results.

  • When NCAs(non-conductive adhesives) are used for adhesion of micro-electronic devices, they often show problems such as delamination and cracking, due to the differences of CTE(coefficients of thermal expansion) between NCAs and substrates. Additions of inorganic particles or flexibilizers have been performed to solve those problems. The effects of silica addition on thermal/mechanical properties of amino modified siloxane(AMS)/silica/epoxy-nanocomposites were examined. The silica was treated by 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(GPTMS) for better compatibility between silica and epoxy matrix. AMS/silica/epoxy-nanocomposites filled with various amounts of AMS(1 and 3 phr) and various amounts of silica(3, 5 and 7 phr) were prepared. And Tg, moduli and CTE of nanocomposites were analyzed. Tg of AMS/Aerosil(non-modified silica)/epoxy-nanocomposites decreased from 125 to $118^{\circ}C$ with increasing Aerosil contents and moduli increased from 2,225 to 2,523 MPa with increasing Aerosil contents. Tg of AMS/M-silica (modified silica)/epoxy-nanocomposites decreased from 124 to $120^{\circ}C$ with increasing M-silica contents and moduli increased from 1,981 to 2,743 MPa with increasing M-silica contents. CTE of AMS/Aerosil/epoxy-nanocomposites and AMS/M-silica/epoxy-nanocomposites showed decreasing tendency regardless of the surface treatments.

  • The effect of the silica content on the state and properties of silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber/butadiene rubber (SBR/BR) compounds containing coupling and dispersion agents was evaluated by varying the content of silica from 50 to 120 phr. Bis-[(triethoxysilyl)propyl] tetrasulfide (TESPT) and zinc 2-ethylhexanoate (ZEH) were used as the coupling and dispersion agents, respectively. The maximum silica content in the pristine material was 80 phr, which increased to 120 phr upon the addition of TESPT and ZEH. The incorporation of TESPT considerably improved most of the rubber properties due to its coupling action and the suppression of silica flocculation, while further addition of ZEH resulted in additional improvements. The properties of the rubber compounds with different silica contents can be fully explained either by an enhancement of the rubber-silica interactions or by their deterioration due to an excessive amount of silica aggregates.

  • In this study, hydrophobically modified fumed silica was added to the PVDF coating to improve corrosion protection performance. Two types of silane modifiers, trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDZ), were used for hydrophobic modification of the fumed silica. The composition of modified fumed silica was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The dispersion of modified fumed silica in the PVDF coating was observed by the transmission electron microscopy, and the hydrophobicity of PVDF coating was analyzed by the water contact angle. Surface properties were examined by the field emission scanning electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. Potentiodynamic polarization was conducted to confirm corrosion protection performance of PVDF coating in terms of hydrophobically-modified fumed silica contents. As a result, the average surface roughness and the water contact angle of the PVDF coating increased with modifier contents. The results of the potentiodynamic polarization test showed an increase of the Ecorr values with increase of the hydrophobicity of PVDF coating. Thus, it clearly indicates that the corrosion protection performance of PVDF coating improved with the addition of the hydrophobic-modified fumed silica that prevents the penetration of moisture into the PVDF coating.
