  • Three-dimensional(3D) printing is a process for producing complex-shaped 3D objects by repeatedly stacking thin layers according to digital information designed in 3D structures. 3D printing can be classified based on the method and material of additive manufacturing process. Among the various 3D printing methods, digital light processing is an additive manufacturing technique which can fabricate complex 3D structures with high accuracy. Recently, there have been many efforts to use ceramic material for an additive manufacturing process. Generally, ceramic material shows low processability due to its high hardness and strength. The introduction of additive manufacturing techniques into the fabrication of ceramics will improve the low processability and enable the fabrication of complex shapes and parts. In this study, we synthesize silica composite material that can be applied to digital light processing. The rheological and photopolymeric properties of the synthesized silica composite are investigated in detail. 3D objects are also successfully produced using the silica composite and digital light processing.

  • Silica membranes were prepared on a porous ${\alpha}$-alumina tube with pore size of 150nm by sol-gel and chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method for hydrogen separation at high temperatures. Silica and ${\gamma}$-lumina membranes formed by the sol-gel method possessed a large amount of mesopores of a Knudsen diffusion regime. In order to improve the $H_2$ selectivity, silica was deposited in the sol-gel derived silica/${\gamma}$-alumina layer by thermal decomposition of tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) at $600^{\circ}C$. The CVD with forced cross flow through the porous wall of the support was very effective in plugging mesopores that were left unplugged in the membranes. The CVD modified silica/alumina composite membrane completely rejected nitrogen permeation and thus showed a high $H_2$ selectivity by molecular sieve effect. the permeation of hydrogen was explained by activated diffusion and the activation energy was 9.52kJ/mol.

  • To improve the application of polymeric dental restorative composite (PDRC) for the posterior and anterior restoration, silica bridged with siloxane unit was firstly prepared by heat-treating a silica filler at various temperatures. Degree of conversion (DC), depth of cure, and dynamic volumetric polymerization shrinkage values of PDRC filled with silica bridged with siloxane unit were investigated to study the effect of heat-treated silica on the polymerization behavior of PDRC. From the experimental result, it was found that depth of cure was decreased with an increase of heat treatment temperature. on the other hand, both DC and polymerization shrinkage values were uniformly enhanced with increasing the heat treatment temperature. This phenomenon can be explained from the study that showed decrease of average particle size of silica resulted in the increase of relative amount of resin matrix in PDRC.

  • Porous carbon with high surface area and pore volume was prepared by a reverse replication process and its toluene equilibrium adsorption behavior was investigated. The preparation process of the porous carbon was composed of fellowing sub-processes in series: synthesis and template preparation of silica gel, impregnation and polymerization of DVB monomer in silica template, carbonization of DVB polymer in a silica-polymer composite, and HF-assisted selective etching of silica in carbon-silica composite. The prepared porous carbon was nano porous and had ultrahigh specific surface area (2007 ㎡/g) and large pore volume (3.07 ㎤/g). The nanoporous carbon showed rapid toluene adsorption rate and good toluene adsorption capacity, compared with a commercial Y-type zeolite. In the present study, a reverse replication process to prepare nanoporous carbons will be introduced and its application potential as a gas adsorbent will be discussed.

  • The epoxy/micro-and nano-mixed silica composites(EMNC) systems were prepared and the AC insulation breakdown strength was evaluated. Glass transition temperature (Tg) and crosslink density were also measured by dynamic mechanical analyzer(DMA) in order to correlate them with the electrical and mechanical properties, and the effect of silane coupling agent on the electrical properties was also studied. Electrical properties and crosslink density of epoxy/micro-silica composite were noticeably improved by addition of nano-silica and silane coupling agent, and the highest breakdown strength was obtained by addition of 0.5~5 phr of nano-silica and 2.5 phr of silane coupling agent, and the highest tensile and flexural strength were obtained by addition of 2.5 phr of nano-silica.

  • In this study, poly(ethyleneoxide) and poly(ethylene imine) polymer blends containing fumed silica fillers were studied in order to enhance the ion conductivity and interfacial properties. Lithium perchlorate ($LiClO_4$) as a salt, and silica($SiO_2$) as the inorganic filler were introduced into the polymer composite electrolyte composites and the composites were examined to evaluate their ionic conductivity for a possibility test of electrolyte application. As the diameter of semicircle in an impedance test became smaller, ionic conductivity of composite electrolytes had been enhanced by addition of 20 wt% silica filler. However, the conductivity was not greatly changed over 20 wt% content because the silica was sufficiently saturated in the polymer electrolytes. Diffraction peaks of PEO became weaker with the addition of inorganic fillers using XRD analysis. It showed that a crystallinity was proportionally reduced by increasing filler contents. The morphology of composite electrolyte films has been investigated by SEM. The heterogeneous morphology which silica was evenly dispersed by the strong adhesion of PEI was shown at higher contents of silica.

  • Colloidal silica is used in various industrial products such as chemical mechanical polishing slurry for planarization of silicon and sapphire wafer, organic-inorganic hybrid coatings, binder of investment casting, etc. An accurate determination of particle size and dispersion stability of silica sol is demanded because it has a strong influence on surface of wafer, film of coatings or bulks having mechanical, chemical and optical properties. The study herein is discussed on the effect of measurement results of average particle size, sol viscosity and electrophoretic mobility of particle according to the volume fraction of eight types of silica sol with different size and surface properties of silica particles which are presented by the manufacturer. The measured particle size and the mobility of these sol were changed by volume fraction or particle size due to highly active surface of silica particle and change of concentration of counter ion by dilution of silica sol. While in case the measured sizes of small particles less than 60 nm are increased with increasing volume fraction, the measured sizes of larger particles than 60 nm are slightly decreased. The mobility of small particle such as 12 nm are decreased with increase of viscosity. However, the mobility of 100 nm particles under 0.048 volume fraction are increased with increasing volume fraction and then decreased over higher volume fraction.

  • Geopolymer, also known as alkali aluminum silicate, is used as a substitute for Portland cement, and it is also used as a binder because of its good adhesive properties and heat resistance. Since Davidovits developed Geopolymer matrix composites (GMCs) based on the binder properties of geopolymer, they have been utilized as flame exhaust ducts and aircraft fire protection materials. Geopolymer structures are formed through hydrolysis and dehydration reactions, and their physical properties can be influenced by reaction conditions such as concentration, reaction time, and temperature. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of silica size and aging time on the mechanical properties of composites. Commercial water glass and kaolin were used to synthesize geopolymers, and two types of silica powder were added to increase the silicon content. Using carbon fiber mats, a fiber-reinforced composite material was fabricated using the hand lay-up method. Spectroscopy was used to confirm polymerization, aging effects, and heat treatment, and composite materials were used to measure flexural strength. As a result, it was confirmed that the longer time aging and use of nano-sized silica particles were helpful in improving the mechanical properties of the geopolymer matrix composite.

  • The effect of the content of microsilica and nanosilica continuously modified with hydroxy silane and epoxy-modified silicone in cycloaliphatic epoxy/microsilica/nanosilica composites (EMNCs) on the mechanical and water repellent properties was evaluated. Surface-modified micro- and nanosilica was well-mixed with a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin in the presence of polyester-modified polydimethylsiloxane (PEM-PDMS) as a dispersing agent using an ultrasonicator. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out using a universal testing machine (UTM). The water repellent property was evaluated by contact angle measurements of water on the composite surface. Tensile strength of the composite could be enhanced by 32.2% up to 91.4 MPa, and the flexural strength was raised to 122.0 MPa, which is 38.8% higher than that of neat epoxy. The contact angle of water on the composite was as high as $104.1^{\circ}$.
