This study applied the previous results of the NAO model, a tidal correction model, to the open boundary condition for the behavior of tidal elevation and tidal currents in the South Sea. This study used the EFDC model considering the wetting and drying problem and using the $\sigma-coordinate$ as a vertical coordinate and generated two mesh cases of the constant grid size of 2.0 km and the variable grid size of $0.5\sim2.0km$. The numerical results for the tides showed that the predicted results were in quite good agreements with the observational data acquired from the tidal stations of the NORI. The predicted tides were observed to propagate from the east area to the west area in the South Sea. The verification results reveal that the numerical results are more correlated with the measured tidal data as the grid size decreases. The grid size of 2 km results in proper simulation of tidal currents in wide waterway and offshore area whereas the numerical results from the grid size of 0.5 km tend to somewhat underestimate the tidal currents affected by narrow waterway and topography in inner-bay.
We developed a grid-based Gaussian plume model to evaluate tracer release data measured at Young Gwang nuclear site in 1996. Downwind distance was divided into every 10m from 0.1km to 20km, and crosswind distance was divided into every 10m centering released point from -5km to 5km. We determined dispersion factors, ${\sigma}_y\;and\;{\sigma}_z$ using Pasquill-Gifford method computed by atmospheric stability. Forecasting ability of the grid-based Gaussian plume model was better at the 3km away from the source than 8km. We confirmed that dispersion band must be modified if receptor is far away from the source, otherwise P-G method is not appropriate to compute diffusion distance and diffusion strength in case of growing distance. So, we developed an empirical equation using linear programming. An objective function was designed to minimize sum of the absolute value between observed and computed values. As a result of application of the modified dispersion equation, prediction ability was improved rather than P-G method.

Submerged thin walls are extreme case of submerged rectangular blocks, and could be used for many purposes in rivers or coastal zones, e.g. to tsunami. To understand flow characteristics including flow and pressure fields around a specific submerged thin wall a numerical model was applied which includes computation of hydrodynamic pressure on ${\sigma}$-coordinate. ${\sigma}$-coordinate has strong merits for simulation of subcritical flow over mild-sloped beds. On the other hand ${\sigma}$-coordinate is quite poor to treat sharp structures on the bed. There have been a few trials to incorporate dynamic pressure in ${\sigma}$-coordinate by some researchers. One of the previous approaches includes process of sloving the Poisson equation. However, the above method includes many high-order terms, and requires long cpu for simulation. Another method SOLA was developed by Hirt et al. for computation of dynamic pressure, but it was valid for straight grid system only. Previous SOLA was modified for ${\sigma}$-coordinate for the present purpose and was adopted in a model system, CST3D. Computed flow field shows reasonable behaviour including vorticity is much stronger than the upstream and downstream of the structure. The model was verified to laboratory experiments at a 2DV flume. Time-average flow vectors were measured by using one-dimensional electro-magnetic velocimeter. Computed flow field agrees well with the measured flow field within 10 % error from the speed point of view at 5 profiles. It is thought that the modified SOLA scheme is useful for ${\sigma}$-coordinate system.
The grid structure with bolt-sphere joints is widely adopted by industrial plants with suspending crane. The alternating reciprocating action of the suspending crane will cause fatigue problems of the grid structure with bolt-sphere joints with respect to the rod, the cone, the sealing plate, the bolt ball and the high strength bolt; while the fatigue of the high strength bolt is the key issue of fatigue failure. Based on efficient and smooth loading equipment with the AMSLER fatigue testing machine, this paper conducted a constant amplitude fatigue test on 18 M20 and 14 M30 high strength bolts with 40Cr material, and obtained 19 valid failure points, 9 unspoiled points with more than 2 million cycles, and 4 abnormal failure points. In addition, it established the constant amplitude fatigue design method, ${[{\Delta}{\sigma}]_{{2{\times}10}}{^6=58.91MPa}$, and analyzed the stress concentration and the fatigue fracture of high strength bolts. It can be explained that the geometrical stress concentration of high-strength bolt caused by spiral burr is severe.

In order to genralize the vertical dispersion of plume at long distances on mesoscale over complex terrain dispersion coefficients data have been obtained systematically according to lapsed time after release by using a composite turbulence water tank that simulates convective boundary layer. Dispersion experiments have been carried out for various combined conditions of thermal turbulence intensity mechanical turbulence intensity and plume release height at slightly to moderately unstable conditions. Results of tracer dispersion experiments conducted using water tank camera and image processing system have been converted into atmospheric dispersion data through the application of similarity law. The equation $\sigma$z/Zi=aX/(b+c X2)0.5 where $\sigma$2; vertical dispersion coefficient zi : mixing height X : dimen-sionaless downwind distance was confirmed to be an appropriate and general equation for expressing $\sigma$2 variation with turbulence intensity and plume release height, The value of "a" was found to be principally affected by mechanical turbulence intensity and that of "b" by mechanical turbulence intensity and release height. It was confirmed that the magnitude of "c" varies with release height. Results of water tank experiments on the relationship of $\sigma$2 vs downwind distance x have been compared with actual atmospheric dispersion data such as CONDORS data and Bowne's nomogram Operating conditions of a composite turbulence water tank for simulating the field turbulence situations of CONDORS experiments and Bowne's $\sigma$2(x) nomogram for suburban area have also been investigated in terms of water temperature difference between convection water tank and bottom plate heating tank grid plate stroke mixing water depth length scale and velocity scale. Moreover the effect of mechanical turbulence intensity on vertical dispersion has been discussed in the light of release height and downwind distance. height and downwind distance.

Applicabilities of two 3-D hydrodynamic models on Chungkye Bay in which tidal flats are well developed were examined. Both EFDC model and ESCORT model with the ${\sigma}$-coordinate showed fairly good results. However, their efficiencies were lowered especially on the tidal flats due to dense vertical grids. This inefficiency could be overcome by using the z-coordinate of the ESCORT model keeping similar accuracy.

A more complete two-dimensional vertical numerical model has been developed to describe the saltwater intrusion in an estuary. The model is based on the previous studies in order to obtain a better accuracy. The non-linear terms of the governing equations are analyzed and the $\sigma$-coordinate system is employed in the vertical direction with full transformation which is recently issued in several studies because numerical errors can be generated during the coordinate transformation of the diffusion term. The advection terms of the governing equations are discretized by an upwind scheme in second-order of accuracy. By employing an explicit scheme for the longitudinal direction and an implicit scheme for the vertical direction, the numerical model is free from the restriction of temporal step size caused by a relatively small grid ratio. In previous researches, some terms induced from the transformation have been intentionally excluded since they are asked the complicate discretization of the numerical model. However, the lack of these terms introduces significant errors during the numerical simulation of scalar transport problems, such as saltwater intrusion and sediment transport in an estuary. The numerical accuracy attributable to the full transformation is verified by comparing results with a previous model in a simply sloped topography. The numerical model is applied to the Han River estuary. Very reasonable agreements for salinity intrusion are observed.

To calculate the total mass flux that change in dry and flood season in the Yeomha Channel of Gyeonggi Bay, the 13 hour bottom tracking observation was performed from the southern extremity. The value of the total mass flux(Lagrange flux) was calculated as the sum of the Eulerian flux value and stroke drift value and the tidal residual flow was harmonically analyzed through the least-squares method. Moreover, the average during the tidal cycle is essential to calculate the mass flux and the tidal residual flow and there is the need to equate the grid of repeatedly observed data. Nevertheless, due to the great differences in the studied region, the number of vertical grid tends to change according to time and since the horizontal grid differs according to the transport speed of the ship as a characteristic of the bottom tracking observation, differences occur in the horizontal and vertical grid for each hour. Hence, the present study has vertically and horizontally normalized(sigma coordinate) to equate the grid per each hour. When compared to the z-level coordinate system, the Sigma coordinate system was evaluated to have no irrationalities in data analysis with 5% of error. As a result of the analysis, the tidal residual flow displayed the flow pattern of sagging in the both ends in the main waterway direction of dry season. During flood season, it was confirmed that the tidal residual flow was vertical 2-layer flow. As a result of the total mass flux, the ebb properties of 359 cm/s and 261 cm/s were observed during dry and flood season, respectively. The total mass flux was moving the intertidal region between Youngjong-do and Ganghwa-do.

The grain growth is very important because of its great influence on the various materials properties. Therefore, in this study, the effects of anisotropic grain boundary energy on grain growth in 2-D have been investigated with a large scale phase field simulation model on PC. A $2000{\times}2000$ grid system and the initial number of grains of about 73,000 were used in the computer simulation. The anisotropic ratio of grain boundary energy, ${\sigma}_{max}/{\sigma}_{min}$, has been varied from 1 to 3. As the anisotropy increased, the grain growth exponent, n, increased from 2.05 to 2.37. The grain size distribution showed a central plateau in the isotropic case, and was changed into no central plateau and the increasing population of very small grains in the anisotropic case, resulting from slowly disappearing grains. Finally, simulated microstructures were compared according to anisotropy.

The influencing factors on the OPC (optical proximity correction) results are quantitatively analyzed using OPCed L/S patterns. ${\sigma}$ values of proximity variations are measured to be 9.3 nm and 15.2 nm for PR-A and PR-B, respectively. The effect of post exposure bake condition is assessed. 16.2 nm and 13.8 nm of variations are observed. Proximity variations of 11.6 nm and 15.2 nm are measured by changing the illumination condition. In order not to seriously deteriorate the OPC, these factors should be fixed after the OPC rules are extracted. Proximity variations of 11.4, 13.9, and 15.2 nm are observed for the mask mean-to-targets of 0, 2 and 4 nm, respectively. The decrease the OPC grid size from 1 nm to 0.5 nm enhances the correction resolution and the OCV is reduced from 14.6 nm to 11.4 nm. The enhancement amount of proximity variations are 9.2 nm corresponding to 39% improvement. The critical dimension (CD) uniformity improvement for adopting the small grid size is confirmed by measuring the CD uniformity on real SRAM pattern. CD uniformities are measured 9.9 nm and 8.7 nm for grid size of 1 nm and 0.5 nm, respectively. 22% improvement of the CD uniformity is achieved. The decrease of OPC grid size is shown to improve not only the proximity correction, but also the uniformity.
