Horizontal hydrodynamic coupling between shuttle tanker and FPSO arranged side-by-side

  • Side-by-side offloading operations are widely utilized in engineering practice. The hydrodynamic interactions between two vessels play a crucial role in safe operation. This study focuses on the coupled effects between two floating bodies positioned side-by-side as a shuttle tanker-FPSO (floating production, storage and offloading) system. Several wave directions with different side-by-side distances are studied in order to obtain the variation tendency of the horizontal hydrodynamic coefficients, motion responses and mean drift forces. It is obtained that the coupled hydrodynamics between two vessels is evidently distinguished from the single body case with shielding and exaggerating effects, especially for sway and yaw directions. The resonance frequency and the peak amplitude are closely related with side-by-side separation distance. In addition, the horizontal hydrodynamics of the shuttle tanker is more susceptible to coupled effects in beam waves. It is suggested to expand the gap distance reasonably in order to reduce the coupled drift forces effectively. Attention should also be paid to the second peaks caused by hydrodynamic coupling. Since the horizontal mean drift forces are the most mainly concerned forces to be counteracted in dynamic positioning (DP) system and mooring system, prudent prediction is beneficial in saving consumed power of DP system and reducing tension of mooring lines.

Downtime cost analysis of offloading operations under irregular waves in Malaysian waters

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the downtime cost of side-by-side offloading operations in Malaysian waters. With the help of a numerical time domain tool, the structure and cable response of moored FPSO vessel was simulated for heading and beam sea-states under irregular waves. The weather downtime was assessed by comparing the response under operational wave condition with the pre defined industrial safe offloading criteria. Additionally, two cases of cable failure were simulated for each sea-state. The novel study on downtime cost was presented for three different location of Malaysia subcontinent for which the location specific wave scatter diagram facilitated to estimate the probability of occurrence of operational wave condition. It was concluded that an unpredictable increment in wave height by 0.5 m can significantly impact the production cost.

클라우드 컴퓨팅 환경에서 이동노드 지원을 위한 기법 (Method for Mobile node in Cloud Computing Environments)

  • 본 논문에서는 이동환경에서 이동단말이 핸드오프 시간과 오프로딩 시간을 측정하여 오프로딩의 수행을 판단하는 오프로딩 지연기법을 제안한다. 제안한 기법은 이동단말에서 핸드오프와 오프로딩 지연시간을 비교하여 오프로딩을 결정할 수 있도록 하여 고정노드를 대상으로 구현된 클라우드 컴퓨팅환경의 구조의 변경 없이 이동환경 클라우드 컴퓨팅을 지원한다. 효율성 분석을 위해 기존 연구에서 사용하는 서버와 단말의 에너지 소비측정을 사용하여 기존 방법과 에너지 소비를 비교 분석하였다. 모의실험 결과 오프로딩 지연 기법은 기존 방법보다 에너지 소비를 감소시키면서 유사한 작업수행 시간을 보이는 것을 확인하였다.

  • In this study, the operability of an FLBT (floating LNG bunkering terminal) was evaluated experimentally. Model tests were conducted in the KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering) ocean engineering basin. An FLBT, an LNG carrier, and two LNG bunkering shuttles were moored side by side with mooring ropes and fenders. Two white-noise wave cases, one irregular wave case, and various regular wave cases were generated. The relative local motions between each LNG loading arm and its corresponding manifold in the initial design configuration were calculated from measured 6-DOF motions at the center of gravity of each of the four vessels. Furthermore, the locations of the LNG loading arms and manifolds were varied to minimize the relative local motions.

  • During the loading/offloading operation of a liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) that is moored in a side-by-side configuration with an offshore plant, sloshing that occurs due to the partially filled LNG tank and the interactive effect between the two floating bodies are important factors that affect safety and operability. Therefore, a time-domain software program, called CHARM3D, was developed to consider the interactions between sloshing and the motion of a floating body, as well as the interactions between multiple bodies using the potential-viscous hybrid method. For the simulation of a floating body in the time domain, hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces were calculated in the frequency domain using the 3D radiation/diffraction panel program based on potential theory. The calculated values were used for the simulation of a floating body in the time domain by convolution integrals. The liquid sloshing in the inner tanks is solved by the 3D-FDM Navier-Stokes solver that includes the consideration of free-surface non-linearity through the SURF scheme. The computed sloshing forces and moments were fed into the time integration of the ship's motion, and the updated motion was, in turn, used as the excitation force for liquid sloshing, which is repeated for the ensuing time steps. For comparison, a sloshing motion coupled analysis program based on linear potential theory in the frequency domain was developed. The computer programs that were developed were applied to the side-by-side offloading operation between the offshore plant and the LNGC. The frequency-domain results reproduced the coupling effects qualitatively, but, in general, the peaks were over-predicted compared to experimental and time-domain results. The interactive effects between the sloshing liquid and the motion of the vessel can be intensified further in the case of multiple floating bodies.

Dynamic analysis of three adjacent bodies in twin-barge floatover installation

  • Floatover technology has been widely used in offshore installation, which has many substantial advantages compared with the traditional derrick barge. During the topside offloading of a twin-barge floatover installation, the transport barge is side by side moored between two floatover barges. In this paper, the twin-barge model with the connecting hawsers and pneumatic fenders is established. Coupled dynamic analysis is carried out to investigate the motions of the barges under wind, wave and current environments. Particular attention is paid to the effects on system responses with different frictional performance of fender, axial stiffness of the hawsers and environmental conditions. The research results can be used for optimizing the parameters of the system and reducing the risk of topside offloading.

  • In recent years, mobile devices have become an essential part of daily life. More and more applications are being supported by mobile devices thanks to edge computing, which represents an emergent architecture that provides computing, storage, and networking capabilities for mobile devices. In edge computing, heavy tasks are offloaded to edge nodes to alleviate the computations on the mobile side. However, offloading computational tasks may incur extra energy consumption and delays due to network congestion and server queues. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize offloading decisions to minimize time, energy, and payment costs. In this article, different offloading models are examined to identify the offloading parameters that need to be optimized. The paper investigates and compares several optimization techniques used to optimize offloading decisions, specifically Swarm Intelligence (SI) models, since they are best suited to the distributed aspect of edge computing. Furthermore, based on the literature review, this study concludes that a Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA) in an edge-based architecture is a good solution for balancing energy consumption, time, and cost.

Hydrodynamic interactions and coupled dynamics between a container ship and multiple mobile harbors

  • As the size of container ships continues to increase, not many existing harbors can host the super-container ship due to its increased draft and the corresponding dredging requires huge budget. In addition, the minimization of waiting and loading/offloading time is the most important factor in harbor competitiveness. In this regard, mobile-harbor concept has been developed in Korea to achieve much improved harbor capacity and efficiency. In developing the concept, one of the most important elements is the operability of crane between two or more floating bodies in side-by-side arrangement. The container ship is to be stationed through a hawser connection to an outside-harbor fixed-pile station with the depth allowing its large draft. The mobile harbors with smart cranes are berthed to the sides of its hull for loading/offloading containers and transportation. For successful operation, the relative motions between the two or more floating bodies with hawser/fender connections have to be within allowable range. Therefore, the reliable prediction of the relative motions of the multiple floating bodies with realistic mooring system is essential to find the best hull particulars, hawser/mooring/fender arrangement, and crane/docking-station design. Time-domain multi-hull-mooring coupled dynamic analysis program is used to assess the hydrodynamic interactions among the multiple floating bodies and the global performance of the system. Both collinear and non-collinear wind-wave-current environments are applied to the system. It is found that the non-collinear case can equally be functional in dynamics view compared to the collinear case but undesirable phenomena associated with vessel responses and hawser tensions can also happen at certain conditions, so more care needs to be taken.

응용 맞춤형 그래픽 분할 실행 라이브러리에 기반한 효율적인 온라인 소프트웨어 서비스 (An Efficient On-line Software Service based on Application Customized Graphic Offloading Library)

  • 본 논문에서는 응용 맞춤형 그래픽 분할 실행 라이브러리에 기반한 효율적인 온라인 소프트웨어 서비스에 대하여 소개한다. 그래픽 분할 실행을 이용한 소프트웨어 서비스는 클라이언트 렌더링을 통하여 3D 그래픽 소프트웨어와 같은 고사양의 소프트웨어를 서버 기반의 온라인 소프트웨어 서비스로 제공할 수 있다. 그래픽 분할 실행은 서버에서 소프트웨어가 실행될 때, 그래픽 관련된 작업은 클라이언트의 GPU를 이용하여 처리하고, 데이터 관련 작업은 서버의 CPU를 이용하여 처리하는 방식이다. 그래픽 분할 실행 소프트웨어 서비스의 성능을 향상시키기 위하여, 비동기 전송 채널을 추가하고, 최적화 된 소프트웨어 공통 모듈과 소프트웨어 맞춤형 모듈을 기존의 그래픽 분할 실행 엔진에 추가한다. 이를 위하여, 본 논문에서는 그래픽 관련 API와 메시지들을 분석하여 소프트웨어 맞춤형 모듈을 구현하고, 서버 사이드 캐싱 방법을 통하여 최적화된 소프트웨어 공통 모듈을 구현하는 방법에 대하여 기술한다. 마지막으로, 성능 비교 실험을 통하여 개선된 분할 실행 엔진이 더 나은 성능을 가짐을 보여준다.

파랑중 컨테이너선과 하역선의 연결장치에 작용하는 하중계산 (Loads of a Rigid Link Connecting a Container Ship and a Catamaran Type Container Offloading Vessel in Waves)

  • 해양파 중에서 2개 선체가 가까운 거리에 계류되어있는 경우에 2선체의 운동을 엄밀한 파 중 2 부유체 운동이론에 의하여 계산하였다. 2 선체의 방사 및 산란파 포텐셜은 특이파 수 현상이 없는 주파수영역 Improved Green 적분방 정식으로부터 구하였다. 규칙파 중에서 근접한 2선체가 서로 연결되지 않은 경우와 강체 연결장치로 병렬 계류된 된 경우의 운동 및 강체연결체에 작용하는 6방향 힘과 모오멘트를 해석하는 기법과 수치실험 결과도 보였다.
