  • The river disaster caused by installation of hydraulic structures on the river gives varieties to flowing water stream, tractive force and so on. In this study, the changes of tractive force and energy from the side weir installation for the purpose of flood control was analyzed through laboratory experiment. The experiments of the pre and after-installation have been performed under conditions that waterway is trapezoidal shape, waterway slope ranges are from 0.1 to 1.0 percentage, and flow rates are 25 l/sec. As results, the specific energy ratio increases in the higher slope and at a certain point, larger specific energy ratio showed than 1 in the 1.0% slope. The tractive force ratio decreases in higher slope and the sections that tractive force ratio appeared higher than 1 are more widespread in the direction of downstream. And calculated tractive force is about 1.3.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the three dimensional vascular changes of periodontal ligament following orthodontic tooth movement. Experimental tooth movement was carried out in 96 Sprague-Dawley rats with the weight of 250g. They were divided into four experimental groups (each 24 rats). The left maxillary first molar was moved mesially with 25g force in group I, and with 75g force in group II. Each three animals were sacrificed after 1, 6, 12, 24 hours, and 3, 7, 14, 21 days. In group III, 25g mesial force was applied for 3 days, and in group IV, 75g mesial force was applied for 3 days. Then the appliances were removed, and each three animals were sacrificed after 1, 6, 12, 24 hours, and 3, 7, 14, 21 days from removal of appliance. The contralateral molars were used for control group. Casting media was injected via left ventricle and polymerized in warm water. After corrosion of surrounding soft tissue, three dimensional vascular changes were examined using scanning electron microscopy. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. Pressure side of group I and II showed degenerative vascular changes such as vascular compression, reduction of vasculature, leakage of casting media. But, regenerative changes were dominant after 7 days of tooth movement. Although the degenerative vascular changes were more severe in group II, which was exposed to heavy force, the timing of these changes was not different between two groups. 2. Periodontal vasculature was reestablished by the growth of new capillaries and their differentiation and union from the remaining periodontal vessels and vessels of alveolar bone marrow. Although vascular regeneration was more rapid in group I, which was exposed to light force, the vasculature was not fully normalized in both groups even after 21 days. 3. There was no remarkable changes in tension side of group I and II, but looping of capillary, new capillary growth, dilation of vessels, redirection of vessels in the direction of tensile force were occurred. 4. In pressure side of group III and IV, in which appliance was removed after 3 days of orthodontic force, bone resorption was continued even after removal of appliance. Regeneration of vasculature was initiated after 1-6 hours, and it was more rapid in group III than group IV. In both groups, the vasculature was not fully normalized even after 21 days. 5. After removal of appliance, tension side of group III and IV showed vascular compression and loss of vasculature.

  • In this study, the design method of the combined sheet pile was considered in the coastal landfill where sandy and clayey soils are mixed, and the behavior in excavation was analyzed. It was confirmed from the elasto-plastic analysis that the predicted behavior of the temporary facilities of earth retaining differs according to the type of the combined sheet pile method (Built up, Interlocking, Welding) and the analysis method (soldier pile method, continuous wall method). In the case of sheet pile member force, the results of the continuous wall analysis method predicted the most conservative results. When the stress ratio (calculation/allowance) of each member was analyzed based on the maximum member force of the combined sheet pile method, the maximum value was obtained for bending moment in the side pile and combined stress in the case of the strut. As a result of finite element analysis, the member force of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress analysis condition, while the compressive force of the strut was large in the consolidation analysis. When comparing the results of the elasto-plastic analysis and the finite element analysis, the shear force of the side pile and the axial force of the strut were greatly evaluated in the elasto-plastic analysis, and the bending moment of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress condition of the finite element analysis. In addition, the displacement of the side pile was predicted to be greater in the finite element analysis than in the elasto-plastic analysis.

  • In the present study, numerical simulation was performed to investigate aerodynamic characteristics of a ducted fan-upper/lower vanes system in hover. Sensitivity analysis of aerodynamic forces for a system component was conducted with the deflection angle of upper vanes varying but at the constant rotational speed and the collective pitch angle of fan blades. Then, vane control performance and duct airload distributions were analyzed in detail to physically understand operating mechanisms of individual vane and interference effect between duct and vanes. Finally, new control concept of operating upper vanes has been proposed to improve the control performance of the full configuration. It is found that the side force and rolling moment of upper vanes increase linearly with the variation of those deflection angle; however, the total side force is significantly small due to the reaction force acted on the duct. It is also found that upper vanes close to the duct contraction side have a key role in changing vane control forces. It is revealed that the duct suction pressure is induced by the interaction with the suction side of upper vanes, while duct pressure recovery by the interaction with the pressure side, leading to increase in duct asymmetric force. When four upper vanes are kept in situ at 0° deflection angle or removed, the total control performance was improved with duct asymmetric force reduced and the total magnitude of roll remarkably increasing up to 80%.

  • In this study, the analytical solution for diffraction near a vertical detached breakwater was suggested by superposing the solutions of diffraction near a semi-infinite breakwater suggested previously using linear wave theory. The solutions of wave forces acting on front, lee and composed wave forces on both side were also derived. Relative wave amplitude changed periodically in space owing to the interactions between diffracting waves and standing waves on front side and the interactions between diffracting waves from both tips of a detached breakwater on lee side. The wave forces on a vertical detached breakwater were investigated with monochromatic, uni-directional random and multi-directional random waves. The maximum composed wave force considering the forces on front and lee side reached maximum 1.6 times of wave forces which doesn't consider diffraction. This value is larger than the maximum composed wave force of semi-infinite breakwater considering diffraction, 1.34 times, which was suggested by Jung et al. (2021). The maximum composed wave forces were calculated in the order of monochromatic, uni-directional random and multi-directional random waves in terms of intensity. It was also found that the maximum wave force of obliquely incident waves was sometimes larger than that of normally incident waves. It can be known that the considerations of diffraction, the composed wave force on both front and lee side and incident wave angle are important from this study.

  • In this study, side force, drag, and the yawing moment were measured based on the angle of attack by using two models of different nose shapes with slender bodies, which were general shapes in the subsonic area. As a result, the side force and yawing moment were the highest at a specific angle of attack. The boundary between asymmetrical normal state and asymmetrical abnormal state were able to be seen. As a result of analyzing the side force, drag, and yawing moment by time, reliability varied depending on the shape of the head at the same angle of attack. The results of measuring pressure distribution from the surface of the slender body at each angle of attack were as follows: as the angle of attack gets higher, the distribution of surface pressure was asymmetrical.

  • The wind pressure distributions were analyzed through the wind tunnel experiment to provide fundamental criteria for the structural design on the three-span arched house according to the wind directions. In order to investigate the wind force distribution, the variation of the wind force coefficients, the mean wind force coefficients, the drag force coefficients and the lift force coefficients were estimated from the experimental data. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The variation of the wind force with the wind directions on the side walls was the greatest at the upwind edge of the walls. The change of pressure from the positive to the negative on the side walls occurred at the wind direction of 30$^{\circ}$ in the first house and 60$^{\circ}$ in the third house. 2. The maximum negative wind force along the length of the roof appeared at the length ratio of 0-0.2, when the wind directions were 90$^{\circ}$ in the first house, 60$^{\circ}$ in the second house and 30$^{\circ}$ in the third house. 3. The maximum negative wind force along the width of the roof appeared at the width ratio and the wind direction of 0.4 and 0$^{\circ}$ in the first house, 0.4-0.6 and 30$^{\circ}$ in the second house and 0.6 and 30$^{\circ}$ in the third house, respectively. 4. The maximum mean positive and negative wind forces occurred at the wind direction of 60$^{\circ}$ and 30$^{\circ}$, respectively, on the side walls of the first house, and the maximum mean negative wind force on the roof occurred at the wind direction of 30$^{\circ}$ in third house. 5. The maximum drag and lift forces occurred at the wind direction of 30$^{\circ}$, and the maximum lift force appeared in the third house. 6. The parts to be considered for the local wind forces were the edges of the walls, the edges of the x-direction of the roofs, and the locations of the width ratio of 0.4 of the first and third house and the center of the width of the second house for the y-direction of the roofs.

  • Side-jets enable the immediate maneuver of a missile compared to control surfaces; however, they may cause adverse effects on aerodynamic coefficients, for they interfere with freestream. To find out the impact of side-jets on aerodynamic coefficients, we simulate side-jets as air gas and utilize multi-fidelity models to evaluate differences between aerodynamic coefficients obtained with and without side-jets. We computed differences in aerodynamic coefficients to investigate side-jet effects for the changes of a Mach number, a bank angle, and an angle of attack. As a result, asymmetrically developed side-jets affect the longitudinal force and moment coefficients, and the lateral force and moment coefficients drastically change in-between -30 and 30 degrees of bank angles. In contrast, side-jets hardly influence the axial force coefficients. As for the axial moment coefficient, we could not determine the side-jet effect due to a lack of aerodynamic coefficient samples in the Mach number. All in all, we confirm that side-jets lead to the change of a missile attitude as they considerably vary the longitudinal and lateral aerodynamic coefficients.

  • Experiments on two-dimensional rectangular prisms with various side ratios (B/D=2, 3, and 4, where B is the along-wind dimension, and D is the across-wind dimension) and rounded corners (R/D=0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%, where R is the corner radius) are reported in this study. The tests were conducted in low-turbulence uniform flow to measure the wind pressures on the surfaces of 12 models for Reynolds numbers ranging from $1.1{\times}10^5$ to $6.8{\times}10^5$. The aerodynamic force coefficients were obtained by integrating the wind pressure coefficients around the model surface. Experimental results of wind pressure distributions, aerodynamic force coefficients, and Strouhal numbers are presented for the 12 models. The mechanisms of the Reynolds number effects are revealed by analyzing the variations of wind pressure distributions. The sensitivity of aerodynamic behavior to the Reynolds number increases with increasing side ratio or rounded corner ratio for rectangular prisms. In addition, the variations of the mean pressure distributions and the pressure correlations on the side surfaces of rectangular prisms with the rounded corner ratio are analyzed at $Re=3.4{\times}10^5$.

  • The effect of pipe breaks in the secondary side is investigated as a part of the fuel assembly qualification program. Using the detailed dynamic analysis of a reactor core, peak responses for the motions induced from pipe breaks are obtained for a detailed core model. The secondary side pipe breaks such as main steam line and economizer feedwater line braksare considered because leak-before-break methodology has provided a technical basis for the elimination of double ended guillotine breaks of all high energy piping systems with a diameter of 10 inches or over in the primary side from the design basis. The dynamic responses such as fuel assembly shear force, bending moment, axial force and displacement, and spacer grid impact loads are carefully investigated. Also, the stress analysis is performed and the effect of the secondary side pipe breaks on the fuel assembly structural integrity under the faulted condition is addressed.
