FEM Based Approach to Predict Rolling Force and Strip Thickness in 4-High Cold Rolling Mill Driven by Backup-Roll (유한요소법을 이용한 보강롤 구동 4단 냉간압연기에서의 압연하중 및 스트립 두께 예측)

  • In this paper, a finite element model is presented for the prediction of roll force and strip thickness in a backup-roll-drive mill. The proposed FE model is focused mainly on analyzing the elastic/plastic behavior between a work roll and a strip as well as the rigid/plastic behavior between a backup roll and a work roll. The capability of the proposed model is demonstrated through application to 4-high silicon steel rolling mill at POSCO. Results show that the predicted roll force and strip thickness rolled accurately agree with the measured them. It is also illustrated that the proper position of work roll displaced to one side from the vertical centerline of the backup-roll may be determined by minimizing the horizontal force of work roll.

The Vortical Flow Field of Delta Wing with Leading Edge Extension

  • The interaction and breakdown of vortices over the Leading Edge Extension (LEX) - Delta wing configuration has been investigated through wing-surface pressure measurements, the off-surface flow visualization, and 5-hole probe measurements of the wing wake section. The description focused on analyzing the interaction and the breakdown of vortices depending on the angle of attack and the sideslip angle. The Effect of angle of attack and sideslip angle on the aerodynamic load characteristics of the model is also presented. The sideslip angle was found to be a very influential parameter of the vortex flow over the LEX-delta wing configuration. The introduction of LEX vortex stabilized the vortex flow, and delayed the vortex breakdown up to a higher angle of attack. The vortex interaction and breakdown was promoted on the windward side, whereas it was suppressed on the leeward side.

  • The aerodynamic features of a pantograph of a high speed train are analyzed according to shapes of pantograph covers. For this purpose, two types of pantograph covers were selected: a wedge type cover and a cone type cover. Then, the change of the aerodynamic forces of the pantograph affected by each type of the pantograph cover was computed. These results were compared with the original lift force of the pantograph. From the results, the cone type cover changes the flow direction from side to side compared with the wedge type cover. Consequently, it is confirmed that the effect of the wedge type cover on the lift force of pantograph is smaller than that of the cone type cover.

Effect of shear wall location in rigid frame on earthquake response of roof structure

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the shear wall location in rigid frames on the dynamic behavior of a roof structure due to vertical and horizontal earthquake motions. The study deals with a gabled long span beam supported by two story rigid frames with shear walls. The earthquake response analysis is carried out to study the responses of the roof: vibration mode, natural period, bending moment and horizontal shear force of the bearings. The study results in the following conclusions: First, a large horizontal stiffness difference between the side frames is caused by the shear wall location, which results in a large vertical vibration of the roof and a large shear force at the side bearings. Second, in this case, the seismic design method for ordinary buildings is not useful in determining the distribution of the static equivalent loads for the seismic design of this kind of long span structures.

  • This paper reports on the effects of crankshaft offset on the engine friction. The effects of crank offset are investigated through the theoretical analysis. In this study, the mathematical models are presented fer evaluationg the friction level of each engine parts. Crank offset influences on the side force acted on the piston pin and sliding speed of piston. Crank offset is very effective to reduce the piston skirt friction. With application of crank offset, total engine friction decreases at low engine speed, but that increase as engine speed increases.

  • Prototype DSLPM (Double Side Linear Pulse Motor) has a complicated magnetic circuit to be composed of permanent magnetics and winding. During the fabricating of DSLPM, we found that upper airgap length may be a little different from lower airgap length because of fabrication tolerance and error. So, a little difference of both airgap length have a various effect on the characteristics of DSLPM. Therefore, in this paper, we analyzed the normal force and maximum static thrust force according to the difference of both airgap length on DSLPM with finite element method. Obtained results can be used for design of DSLPM with higher performance.

  • Supersonic viscous flow over a 5 degree half angle cone studied computationally with three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Steady asymmetric solutions of 5-deg half angle cone show that the asymmetric flow separation is caused by convective instability. The angle of attack, Reynolds number, and Mach number affected the side force variation that is caused by asymmetric vortical flow.

  • So far, carbide insert production technology was carried out using a diamond grinding wheel. This production technology has problem that raise production costs and decrease in productivity. The SIDE PRESS method to solve this problem have been developed. In this paper, the machining characteristics of lateral chip breaker turning inserts produced by the SIDE PRESS method was studied. The cutting force and the resulting surface roughness were measured at various cutting conditions. The experimental results indicate that the chip breaker inserts of three-dimensional geometry is the best cutting performance.

  • Computer programs have been developed to design the forging dies of turbine and compressor blades. The design of forging dies is based the side force and the filling of die cavity. In this study, slab method has been applied to simulate forging processes numerically. the program composed of Visual Basic also provides the informations of mean stress, total forging load, distribution of temperature, position of neutral line, total volume and volume of flash in the final stage to users. The preform position is predicted by the reverse slab method. The program has been successfully applied to various types of turbine blades.

  • The fluxless wetting properties of UBM-coated Si-wafer to the binary lead-free solders(Sn-Ag, Sn-Sb, Sjn-In, Sn0Bi) were estimated by wetting balance method. With the new wettability indices from the wetting curves of one side coated specimen, the wetting property estimation of UBM-coated Si-wafer was possible. For UBM of Si-chip, Au/Cu/Cr UBm was better than au/Ni/TI in the point of wetting time/ At general reflow process temperature, the wettability of high melting point solders(Sn-Sb, Sn-Ag) was better than that of low melting point one(Sn-Bi, Sn-In). The contact angle of the one side coated Si-plate to the solder could be calculated from the force balance equation by measuring the static state force and the tilt angle.
