Electromgnetic joining of aluminum alloy tubes to high toughness polyurethane rubber cores is studied in order to estimate the joining strength and to analyze the effect of the process variables. The equation which can estimate the joining strength is proposed under considering the elastic recovery of the polyurethane core and the radial shrinkage of the core by pulling it axially. The obtained results are as follows : 1) The joining strength is mainly dependent on the magnitude of residual elastic strain of the polyurethane core. 2) The radial shrinkage (residual strain reduction) of the core during the axial pulling causes the joining strength to decrease severely. The equation for the reduced axial strength is proposed and it is found that the estimated values agree well with experimental results. 3) The magnitude of radial shrinkage could be reduced for the smaller value of ratio l/r. 4) The joining strength in metal/polymer joining increases as the friction coefficient increases. But its effect of friction coefficient is insignificant in comparison with the case of metal/metal joining.

Effective and quick methods that are easy to carry out even by hand, or easy to be programmed by hand-held calculators are needed for assessing the sizes of contrasts of unreplicated $2^P$ factorial designs. Moreover, they have the advantage to use the original numerical measurements which makes the analysis easier to explain. Basically, Lenth (1989) is one of the most familiar of such quick and powerful methods. Later on, Aboukalam (2001) proposes under constant effects an alternative sophisticated method to Lenth's method. The proposed method is the supreme from two considerable powers. The first utmost indicates less inflation deficiency while the other utmost indicates less shrinkage deficiency. Also under constant effects, Al-Shiha (2006) introduces an alternative quick method which is less shrinkage deficiency while the inflation deficiency is the same. If effects are random, Aboukalam (2005) introduces an alternative quick method in which the first power is favored as long as the second power is within a small margin. In the spirit of quickness and fixed effects, this article adds another method which is supreme from the two considerable powers. The method is based on a one step of the scale-part of a suggested M-estimate for location. Explicitly, we suggest adapting the skipped median (ASKM) estimate. Critical values of ASKM-method, for several sample sizes often used, are empirically computed.

Two stage shrinkage testimator is a kind of adaptive estimators based on a test on an initial estimate of parameter. Since weighing factor plays an important roll in assessing the properties of testimator, its choice is extremely crucial in two stage testimation. Adke, Waikar and Schuurmann(1987) proposed a testimator for the mean of an exponential distribution defined with their own weighing factor. Two alternative testimators obtained using changed weighing factors are presented, and their Mean squared error(MSE) formulae are provided in this paper. Their properties are compared with those of existing one by means of MSE.

Carbonation and drying shrinkage are very important properties of concrete, that can cause concrete to lower its capacity and spall. But the research on them in high strength concrete is very poor. In this study, to estimate influences of W/B, the kind of admixture, the replacement ratio of admixture, fineness of blast furnace and etc. on drying shrinkage and carbonation, we make experiment with 3 levels(28, 35, 55%) of W/B, 3 kinds(blast-furnace slag, fly-ash, silica-fume) of admixture, 3 levels of the replacement ratio, 3 levels(4000, 6000, 8000cm2/g) of fineness of blast-furnace slag and 2 kinds of curing condition. As the results, compressive strength of concrete was decreased, as W/C was increased and the replacement ratio of admixture was increased. Drying shrinkage was increased, as W/B was higher, the replacement ratio of admixture was increased and fineness of blast-furnace slag was decreased. And carbonation was increased, as W/B ratio was higher, the replacement ratio of admixture was increased.
The purpose of this study is to estimate the shrinkage of wood by LV-SEM (Low-Vacuum Scanning Electron Microscope) which can observe wetted wood sample. The shrinkage of small sample specimen by the dehumidification in the specimen chamber was investigated and compared with that of normal wood specimen. The observation of cross sectional surface of wood from wetted condition to dried condition can be achieved in about twenty minutes by means of the dehumidification in the specimen chamber of LV-SEM. The volumetric shrinkage of earlywood was almost the same as that of latewood. The shrinkage of SEM observation specimen was similar to that of normal wood specimen. From the correlation of the shrinkages between SEM observation specimen and normal wood specimen, it is surmised that the shrinkage of wood is more strictly dominated by shrinkage of latewood than that of earlywood.

The use of half PC slab has been increasing to shorten construction period. Because the drying shrinkage of topping concrete is restrained by PC slab, the tensile stress is generated at the topping concrete and the cracks can be occurred at the topping concrete due to drying shrinkage. Therefore, it is important to predict the tensile strain of half PC slab due to drying shrinkage to improve the quality of half PC slab. However, there is no studies on prediction of shrinkage behavior of half PC slab yet. Therefore, in this study, half PC slab was made, and the predictability of tensile strain generated at half PC slab due to drying shrinkage was investigated. The step by step method considering creep was used to estimate the tensile strain of half PC slab. In result, good agreement was obtained between the analytical and experimental values.
Creep and shrinkage behaviour of an ultra lightweight cement composite (ULCC) up to 450 days was evaluated in comparison with those of a normal weight aggregate concrete (NWAC) and a lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) with similar 28-day compressive strength. The ULCC is characterized by low density < 1500 $kg/m^3$ and high compressive strength about 60 MPa. Autogenous shrinkage increased rapidly in the ULCC at early-age and almost 95% occurred prior to the start of creep test at 28 days. Hence, majority of shrinkage of the ULCC during creep test was drying shrinkage. Total shrinkage of the ULCC during the 450-day creep test was the lowest compared to the NWAC and LWAC. However, corresponding total creep in the ULCC was the highest with high proportion attributed to basic creep (${\geq}$ ~90%) and limited drying creep. The high creep of the ULCC is likely due to its low elastic modulus. Specific creep of the ULCC was similar to that of the NWAC, but more than 80% higher than the LWAC. Creep coefficient of the ULCC was about 47% lower than that of the NWAC but about 18% higher than that of the LWAC. Among five creep models evaluated which tend to over-estimate the creep coefficient of the ULCC, EC2 model gives acceptable prediction within +25% deviations. The EC2 model may be used as a first approximate for the creep of ULCC in the designs of steel-concrete composites or sandwich structures in the absence of other relevant creep data.
Autogenous shrinkage, a significant contributor of early-age cracking of high strength concrete (HSC), must be avoided or minimized from an engineering point of view. Therefore, it is necessary to study how to reduce and to predict autogenous shrinkage with respect to tile control of early-age cracking. In this study, autogenous shrinkage of HSC with various water-binder ratio (W/B) ranging from 0.50 to 0.27 and fly ash content of 0, 10, 20, and 30% were investigated. Based on the test results, thereafter, a prediction model for autogenous shrinkage was proposed. Test results show that autogenous shrinkage increased and more rapidly developed with decreasing the W/B. Also, the higher fly ash contents, the smaller autogenous shrinkage. In particular, even if much autogenous shrinkage occurs at very early-ages, stress may not be developed while the stiffness of concrete is low. In order to consider the change of concrete stiffness, the transition time referred as stiffening threshold, was obtained by monitoring of ultrasonic pulse velocity evolution and considered in the autogenous shrinkage model. From a practical point of view, the proposed model can be effectively used to predict autogenous shrinkage and to estimate stress induced by autogenous shrinkage.

The linear absolute shrinkage and selection operator(Lasso) method improves the low prediction accuracy and poor interpretation of the ordinary least squares(OLS) estimate through the use of $L_1$ regularization on the regression coefficients. However, the Lasso is not robust to outliers, because the Lasso method minimizes the sum of squared residual errors. Even though the least absolute deviation(LAD) estimator is an alternative to the OLS estimate, it is sensitive to leverage points. We propose a robust Lasso estimator that is not sensitive to outliers, heavy-tailed errors or leverage points.
