  • Power transformer is one of the major and key apparatus in electric power system. Monitoring and diagnosis of transformer fault is necessary for improving the life period of transformer. The failures caused by short circuits are one of the causes of transformer outages. The short circuit currents induce excessive forces in the transformer windings which result in winding deformation affecting the mechanical and electrical characteristics of the winding. In the present work, a transformer producing only the radial flux under short circuit is considered. The corresponding axial displacement profile of the windings is computed using Finite Element Method based transient structural analysis and thus obtained displacements are compared with the experimental result. The change in inter disc capacitance and mutual inductance of the deformed windings due to different short circuit currents are computed using Finite Element Method based field analyses and the corresponding Sweep Frequency Responses are computed using the modified electrical equivalent circuit. From the change in the first resonant frequency, the winding movement can be quantified which will be useful for estimating the mechanical withstand capability of the winding for different short circuit currents in the design stage itself.

  • This paper deals with the coupled electromagnetic-mechanical field analysis for short-circuit electromagnetic force of the dry-type transformer. The short-circuit currents are calculated using external circuit in accordance with short-circuit test equipment. According to short-circuit current, the generated magnetic leakage flux density in dry-type transformer model is calculated by finite element method. The radially-directed electromagnetic forces in windings are calculated using electromagnetic field analysis and then axially-directed electromagnetic forces in windings are calculated using electromagnetic-mechanical field analysis. The calculated axially-directed electromagnetic forces in high voltage winding are compared to those of measured ones and showed good agreement with experimental results.

  • This paper describes the exact short-circuit current calculation technique for the single-phase transformer which is installed in the three-phase systems and shorted in the secondary side. Not only the results for a short-circuit current calculation in the existing literatures are wrong, but also little literature deals with the short-circuit current for a single-phase transformer. So, this paper presents a theoretical study and calculation method for a single-phase short current. The validity of the presented method is investigated through Simulation using "Power Tools" and "PSim" program.

  • This paper describes the work performed by computer simulation to achieve a satisfactory method of predicting the short circuit withstand strength of transformer which, may be too big for test due to physical or economic reasons. In fact, the windings of power transformer are subjected to extremely severe stresses under short-circuit condition. From our work, however, were computed such stresses as buckling, tending and compression occurring in transformer windings.

  • The residual flux in transformer's iron cores leads to a distortion of short-circuit current occasionally. And some considerable distortion may have effect on the validation of the test results. To avoid the substantial distortion, a suitable pretest is performed before the actual test. In case of applying this method there must be excessive overvoltage due to switching of an unloaded transformer and chopping of an excitation current. The purpose of this paper is estimate that the effect of the overvoltage results from this phenomenon on insulation performance of short-circuit transformer.

  • This study aims to research and analyze the cause and countermeasures of the short-circuit test failures of the distribution transformer, which captures failure share at the highest level when carrying out its performance test. For this purpose, the research was done on the basis of 77 failure cases out of 998 tests in total performed by the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute(KERI) from 2004 to 2010. Based on the research, the paper also includes analysis of the causes of the short-circuit test failures in its early stage of transformer development and proposes its countermeasures accordingly.

  • The inrush current of transformer cause saturation effects of recovery voltage for short-circuit power testing. the inrush current depends on the residual flux of the transformer core. when inrush current occurs, it is contains a d.c. component and the high harmonic content of the current are of importance to relay protection of testing circuit. this paper describes of decrease method of inrush current for high power short-circuit testing transformer.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the streaming electrification mechanism (SEM) generated in UHV transformer. This experiment used Couette Charger and interpreted the mechanism hydromechanically and electromagnetically. This work estimated the turbulent core density ($\rho$o) by measuring the short circuit current (isc) and the open circuit voltage (νoc) generated in Couette Charger and also studied the changes of the short circuit (isc), the open circuit voltage (νoc), the turbulent core density ($\rho$o) and the conductivity ($\sigma$) with adding BTA to restrain streaming electrification. as a result adding BTA increased the conductivity of oil and decreased the turbulent core density($\rho$o).

  • The residual flux(${\psi}_r$) in transformer's iron cores cause the distortion of short-circuit current occasionally. And some considerable distortion effect on the validation of test results. To prevent this situation, there needs some suitable control of residual flux through the pretest. This paper deals with the how to control the residual flux in pretest and the comparison between the two test results which were obtained by different test method.

  • In this thesis, we would show how to lay out and produce the shell-type transformer using the world's first Zig-Zag winding way, instead of a general winding. Also, we omit the progress of varnish-impregnation, so that we could develop the new shell-type transformer winding which improves the short-circuit characteristics and dielectric strength. It has a copernican effect to reduce the thickness and the number of insulation papers, as compared with a general winding transformer. We would prove that it is far superior in cost reduction, loss reduction, and mechanical force of short-circuit. And eventually you must find it useful in the pole transformer for power distribution in the domestic power companies.
