  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of night temperature on tomato and grafted watermelon seedlings, particularly, shoot height, leaf area, stem diameter, and total dry weight and relationship among the growth parameters which are used to evaluate healthy seedling. Plants were grown at 10, 15, and $20^{\circ}C$. Leaf area index (LAI) and total dry weight of tomato seedlings weight deceased more significantly under $10^{\circ}C$ than other night temperature regimes. In grafted watermelon seedlings, shoot height increased shapely and stem diameter decreased under $20^{\circ}C$. Increasing the integral temperature, leaf area of tomato seedlings under $10^{\circ}C$ decreased and shoot height of grafted watermelon seedlings increased although temperature integrals are same. The relationships among the growth parameter were changed upon the night temperature. Stem diameters of tomato seedlings had upward tendency with increase of shoot height, but there were no significant differences among night temperature regimes. Shoot hight of grafted watermelon seedlings had no relationship with shoot height. These results indicate that shoot height and stem diameter of tomato seedlings is not appropriate for assessing seedlings quality but shoot height of grafted watermelon seedlings with stem diameter is available.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus sp. and Saccharomyces sp. on turf quality, shoot and root growth of creeping betgrass in golf course by measuring turf color index, chlorophyll content, dry weight of shoot and root, T/R ratio and root length. Fertilizer treatment was designed as follows; nonfertilizer (NF), control (CF; compound fertilizer), microorganism medium(MO; CF+MO)), microorganism medium contained Fe(MO-Fe; CF+MO-Fe) and microorganisum medium contained S (MO-S; CF+MO-S). Soil properties investigated after experiment was scarcely affected by applied fertilizers in root zone of creeping bentgrass. The turf color index and chlorophyll index of MO, MO-Fe, MO-S treatment were higher than those of NF, and similar to those of CF. The turfgrass root in MO and MO-Fe treatment was longer than others. The dry weight of shoot in MO and MO-S was higher than CF and that of root in MO and MO-Fe, and dry weight of MO was increased than that of NF and CF, by 26% and 6%, respectively. AS compared with NF, T/R ratio of CF, MO, MO-Fe and MO-S was increased, and MO and MO-Fe was similar to CF, MO-S higher. Nutrient content in CF, MO, MO-Fe and MO-S was contained more than in NF, and it was higher in shoot. These was suggested that application of MO induced the development of quality and growth of creeping bentgrass by assisting root growth and nutrients uptake.

  • The Plant growth Promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), Pseudomonas sp. (A3) and Bacillus sp. (AT33) were isolated from the rhizosphere of Amaranthus blitum collected from soil contaminated with chromium. Both bacterial strains quantitatively reduced hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium. Pseudomonas sp. broughter greater conversion of Cr6+ in the medium (100%) as compared to Bacillus sp.(62%). Phaseolus mungo seeds inoculated with Pseudomonas sp. or Bacillus sp. were grown under different concentration of chromium. The monitored parameters included elongation of shoot and root, fresh weight, dry weight and concentration of chromium in the shoot and root systems. As compared to non inoculated seedlings those inoculated with A3 and AT33 exhibited better growth.

  • To product the edible fresh shoots of Sedum sarmentosum in summer season, 4 local strains were cultivated with cutting propagation under 0, 30, 50, 70, 90% shading. Effect of shading on shoot growth, leaf chroma value, SPAD value, and bitterness were investigated at 35 days after cutting. Plant height, the number of node and leaf stem diameter in $30{\sim}90%$ shading were increased than in the control, and Pohang local strain had little-overgrowth shoot, thicker stem, a few brenches per shoot, and larger leaf compared to the other local strains. Fresh and dry weight under shading were increased than in the control, dry weight of pohang local strain was highest in 50% shading. Hunter L and b values were decreased out of proportion to higher shading rate. SPAD value in $50{\sim}90%$ shading was significantly lower than in the control. The bitterness of fresh shoot was decreased out of proportion to higher shading rate. In Summer season, producing the fresh shoot of S. sarmentosum was excellent in 50% shading, and Pohang local strain among 4 local strains was more stable and good in yield and quality under shading.

  • The effects of salicylic acid(SA) and water deficit on growth and proline accumulation were investigated in cucumber(Cucurmis sativus L.) seedlings. Exogenous application of SA(100 $\mu$M-1 mM) led to a noticeable decrease in root and shoot growth, and dry weight of seedlings. Anatomical observation on leaf of cucumber revealed that the thickness of all leaf tissue components decreased in SA-treated plants. The effect was most pronounced on the width of the adaxial epidermis. In the separate effects of SA(0, 100, 500 and 1000 $\mu$M) and water deficit induced by PEG(0, 4.4, 7.0 and 9.6 %) on growth, the water deficit treatments had greater effects on growth traits than SA. Combinations of SA and PEG(SA+PEG) decreased shoot and root dry matter, and root length. Proline increased slightly in SA-treated seedlings, but exhibited a marked increase in water deficit application. Combinations of SA+PEG induced higher proline in both shoots and roots than SA stress alone. Shoots had higher proline than roots. Our data support a role of SA potentiating the osmotic stress response of germinating cucumber seedling.

  • To investigate changes of dry weight, C/N ratio, carbohydrate, ratein and nucleic acids in the barks of the hardwood cutting of mulberry plants, the barks of the hardwood cutting were taken every 10days from the cutting day to 40days after cutting. Results were summarized as follows : Growth of shoot and root in Keomseolppong (Morus bimbycis KoIDZ.) after cutting was better than that in kaeryangppon (Morus alba L.) and Daeryugppong(Morus Lhou(SER.) KoIDZ.). Dry weight in the barks of the hardwood cutting decreased up to 40days after cutting (decrease percentage of dry weight : about 14%) and Keomiseolppong showed the highest decrease precentage of dry weight. Change of C/N ratio decreased in the initiation, whereas that from 10days after cutting increased with the growth of new shoot, C/N ratio was the highest in Keomseolppong and the lowest in Kaeryangppong. Total sugar showed decreasing tendency up to 40 days after cutting the increase from 10 days to 20 days. Reducing sugar increased in the frist 20days, followed gradually decrease up to 40 days after cutting Starch levels decreased up to 40 days. Change in the content of starch closely paralleled to that of dry weight of bark of the hardwood cutting. Content of total sugar and starch in Keomseolppong was the highest, and was consumed more than that in the rest of varieties. Crude protein and soluble protein increased up to 10 days after cutting, followed decrease up to 40 days. Protein content of Keomseolppong was smaller than that in the rest of varieties. RNA content showed the same tendency with that of protein content, but Keomseolppong showed always the highest. Content of DNA did not show any change and difference among three varieties.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the patterns of dry matter (DM) production and accumulation, and to screen the relationships between related major growth characters and DM accumulation in four cassava varieties in Bogor $(6^{\circ}19'-6^{\circ}47'S,\;106^{\circ}21'-107^{\circ}13'E)$, West Java, Indonesia. Gading and Adiral developed an enough source and canopy in short at the early growth phase and then translocated assimilates to storage roots with a higher partitioning rate, even these varieties were considered as early-bulking varieties, which have superior source and sink potentials in increasing yield and DM of tubers. The root/shoot ratio (R/SR), total dry weight (TDW), leaf area duration, leaf area index (LAI), and number of tubers showed higher positive correlations with the dry weight of roots (DWR), and the direct effects of TDW, R/SR, and LAI on the DWR were higher. These characters were considered to be useful target characters to screen cassava varieties with high yield potential and high DM in aspect of tuber production.

  • This study was conducted to investigate nutrient content at shoot and root(contained runner in zoysiagrass) in creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass before turfgrass dormancy. The shoot ratio of dry weight in creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass was 12%, 27% and 25% and root ratio was 88%, 73% and 75%, respectively. The orders of nutrients contained in turf-grass were N>K>Ca>P>Mg>Na in plant tissues. The proportion of nutrients in tissue of creeping bentgrass, kentucky bluegrass and zoysiagrass was 17%, 28% and 34% in shoot and 83%, 72% and 66% in root, respectively. These results showed that nutrients in turf-grass tissue was contained more than 70% in root before grasses dormancy. In turf grass management, all grasses were required to fertilize sufficiently N, $K_2O$, CaO and $P_2O_5$ before winter.
