Shock wave interaction with droplet-gas medium is investigated in this paper. In the present computation, the shock wave is initially started in a pure gas and reflected from the wedge to interact with the droplet-ridden gas flows. We used the compressible two-fluid two-phase model that is solved by the two-fluid version of the HLL scheme. The interfacial drag force and heat transfer were included to model the interaction between continuous and dispersed phases. The parametric effect of void fraction on the shock wave reflection in the two-phase media was investigated.
When high-pressure gas is exhausted through nozzle exit to the atmosphere, expanded supersonic jet is formed with the Mach disk at a specific condition. In two-dimensional supersonic jets, the hysteresis phenomenon of the reflected shock waves is found to occur under quasi-steady flow conditions. Transitional pressure ratio between the regular reflection and Mach reflection in the jet is affected by this phenomenon. In the present study, experiments are carried out on internal flow in a supersonic nozzle to clarify the hysteresis phenomena for the shock waves and to discuss its interdependence on the rate of the change of pressure ratio with time. Flow visualization is carried out separately on the straight and divergent channels downstream of the nozzle throat section. The influence that the hysteresis phenomena have on the location of shock wave in a supersonic nozzle is also investigated experimentally.
A density based method with homogeneous cavitation model to investigate cavitation-bubble collapsing behavior is proposed and applied to bubble-shock interaction problems. By applying this method, cylindrical bubbles located in the liquid and incident liquid shock wave are computed. Bubble collapsing behavior, shock-bubble interaction and shock transmission/reflection pattern are investigated.
This study introduced a lattice Boltzmann computational scheme capable of modeling thermo hydrodynamic flows with simpler equilibrium particle distribution function compared with other models. The equilibrium particle distribution function is the local Maxwelian equilibrium function in this model, with all the constants uniquely determined. The characteristics of the proposed model is verified by calculation of the sound speeds, and the shock tube problem. In the lattice Boltzmann method, a thermal fluid or compressible fluid model simulates the reflection of a weak shock wave colliding with a sharp wedge having various angles $\theta$$\sub$w/. Theoretical results using LBM are satisfactory compared with the experimental result or the TVD.
When a vortex diffracts upon encountering a vortex, many strong and weak waves are produced in the course of interaction. They are the cause of shock wave attenuation and noise production. This phenomenon is fundamental to understanding the more complex supersonic turbulent Jet noise. In this paper we have reviewed the research on shock-vortex interaction we have carried on last seven years. We have computationally investigated the parameter effect. When a shock is strong, shock diffraction pattern becomes complex since the slip lines from the triple points on Mach stem curl into the vortex, causing an entropy layer. When the vortex is unstable, vortexlets are brought about each of which make shock diffraction of a reduced intensity. Strong vortex produces quadrupole noise as it impinges into a vortex. Elementary interaction models such as shock splitting, shock reflection, and shock penetration are presented based on shock tube experiment. These models are also verified by computational approach. They easily explain production and propagation of the aforementioned quadrupole noise, Diverging acoustics are explained in terms of shock-vortexlet interactions for which a computational model Is constructed.
This paper analyses the transient response of a spherical elastic shell located near fee surface and impinged by spherical step-exponential acoustic shock waves. The problem is solved through extension of a method (Huang, 1969) previously formulated for the excitation in an infinite domain, which employs the classical separation of variables, series solutions, and Laplace transform technique The effect of the free surface reflection is taken into account using the image source method. The reflection of the incident wave has been treated by the same image formulation. If the reflection of the pressure field scattered and radiated by the shell is considered, the problem becomes that of multiple scattering by two spheres. However, this is in general negligible considering errors inherent from other sources and that the scattered and radiated pressure waves emanating from the shell are small. Thus, the problem is reduced to that of a structure immersed in an infinite fluid and impinged upon the origin and the image incident.
A theoretical model on shock-vortex interaction is investigated using a numerical technique to solve Navier-Stokes equations. The shock-vortex interaction generated by this model based on the classical Rankin vortex is precisely investigated for a benchmark problem: Dosanjh and Weeks experiment. In terms of shock dynamics, the interaction is categorized to three stages: shock distortion, shock split, and shock-shock interaction. The quadrupolar structure of the sound source produced by the interaction is far supported with the present model, and the difference between experiment and theoretical model is also discussed in this paper.
In this paper we present computation of a reflected shock in the hypersonic flow of air with chemical reactions. We consider two dimensional steady inviscid hypersonic flow of air around bodies including chemical reaction effects. At a high Mach number, a strong shock is formed in front of the body when a wedge is placed against the flow. In front of the shock, temperature and pressure increase greatly and the flow is in nonequilibrium state. If the shock hits a wall, then a reflected shock is formed in the nonequilibrium flow region. Behind this reflected shock, the temperature and pressure are very high. We carry out the computation of the reflected shock and the flow behind it. The jump conditions at the reflected shock are presented. A technique combining smooth transforms of domain and implicit difference methods is used to overcome numerical difficulties associated with the lack of resolution behind the shock and near the body.
Investigated In this paper is the shock reflection from a blunt body, In particular, a circular cylinder of 20 mm diameter, for the weak shock impinging in the range 1<$M_s$ <2. Pressure and shock speed are measured for various shock strengths. Double-pulse holographic interferograms are taken to study the unsteady flow field at $M_s=1.34$. These experimental results are, in overall, well compared with the unstructured adaptive finite volume computation of the Euler equations performed in this study. Correlation of incident and reflected shocks and shock-shock locus obtained by experiment, computation, and theory are presented in parallel.
Recently micro shock tube is extensively being used in many diverse fields of engineering applications but the detailed flow physics involved in it is hardly known due to high Knudsen number and strong compressibility effects. Unlike the macro shock tube, the surface area to volume ratio for a micro shock tube is very large. This unique effect brings many complexities into the flow physics that makes the micro shock tube different compared with the macro shock tube. In micro shock tube, the inter- molecular forces of working gas can play an important role in specifying the flow characteristics of the unsteady shock wave flow which is essentially generated in all kinds of shock tubes. In the present study, a CFD method was used to predict and visualize the unsteady shock wave flows using the unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations, furnished with the no-slip and slip wall boundary conditions. Maxwell's slip equations were used to mathematically model the shock movement at high Knudsen number. The present CFD results show that the propagation speed of the shock wave is directly proportional to the initial pressure and diameter of micro shock tube.
