  • The model for ship maneuvering simulation is to enhance the competence of officer's ship maneuvering skills such as navigation equipment operation, collision avoidances, countermeasure an emergency situation so on. Despite using such ship maneuvering model, critical maritime accidents are occurred periodically in the world. To find adequate simulation model to evaluate competence abilities of deck officer who have maneuvering skills with some competence levels, we search the standard ship maneuvering method representing on the part 3 Person Overboard(POB) to onboard emergences of IAMSAR manual. Moreover we monitor the officer's human factors appearing during education and training and consider the use of human factors as fundamental data.

  • The most complicated and difficult area in the simulation of evacuation process is the area of human behavior. However, it is generally very difficult to understand and quantify human behaviors since the factors involved vary significantly according to the types of accidents and the environment. The walking speed of passenger is especially affected by dynamic effect and list due to damage and ship motion in wave. There are various methods to get the useful data for evacuation simulation. The onboard experimental approach is one of the strongest method. This paper discusses the onboard experimental results of human mobility of passengers in evacuation from ship. To realize ship trim and heel due to maritime casuality, the passage model for experiment is made. The experiment was carried out at dynamic and static condition respectively using the ship with passage model. The result was evaluated and it will be reflected in evacuation simulation tool.

  • As the LNG carrier operates in ice covered waters, it is key to ensure the overall safety, which is related to the coupling effect of ice-breaking process and internal liquid sloshing. This paper focuses on the sloshing simulation of the ice-breaking LNG carrier, and the numerical method is proposed using Circumferential Crack Method (CCM) and Volume of Vluid (VOF) with two main key factors (velocity νx and force Fx). The ship motion analysis is carried out by CCM when the ship navigates in the ice-covered waters with a constant propulsion power. The velocity νx is gained, which is the initial excitation condition for the calculation of internal sloshing force Fx. Then, the ship motion is modified based on iterative computations under the union action of ice-breaking force and liquid sloshing load. The sloshing simulation under the LNG tank is studied with the modified ship motion. Moreover, an ice-breaking LNG ship with three-leaf type tank is used for case study. The internal LNG sloshing is simulated with three different liquid heights, including free surface shape and sloshing pressure distribution at a given moment, pressure curves at monitoring points on the bulkhead. This present method is effective to solve the sloshing simulation during ice-breaking process, which could be a good reference for the design of the polar ice-breaking LNG carrier.

  • The safety assessment of the structure related to people has become the most important part in the process of the design. Especially, in the case of a ship, as regulations about the safety of passengers and the pollution in the ocean are strictly reinforcing, the safety assessment has become the most important part in the process of the design. In this paper, we suggested network-based simulation system framework using HLA (High Level Architecture) among many kind of simulations to assess the safety of the ship. In addition, the visualization method which is composed of graphic user interface for ship modeling and the visualization of ship motion is presented.

  • Recently, to improve the safety and maneuverability at fairway around harbor the POD system has been equipped on a ship. And the interest about maneuvering characteristics of a cruise ship has been increasing. In this paper the mathematical model of maneuvering motion of a cruise ship with twin POD system in general speed and slow speed are presented. And the maneuvering coefficients of mathematical model are obtained from the captive model tests using CPMC(Computerized Planar Motion Carriage). Computer simulation using mathematical model in general speed and slow speed are carried out and compared with the results of free running model test with the same model ship. The differences between the mathematical models are compared and discussed. In this paper the mathematical models, the results of captive model test and simulation results are presented.

  • So far, many simulation researches associated with naval ships have been concentrated on the tactical systems and naval ship development. However, studies on the improvement of living conditions for naval ship crews were limited. This study targets a crew mess room which is a typical welfare facility in naval ships and existing modeling and simulation methodologies for naval tactical and strategic systems cannot be applied to the crew room simulations. This paper suggests a simulation modeling framework based on 3-dimensional discrete event simulation methodology for crew mess room congestion assessment and operation scenarios. The simulation modeling framework is verified through practical case simulations. The purpose of simulation modeling framework consists of process and system architecture for operation feasibility tests of welfare facilities in naval ships and is to guide an assessment of the operability performance of a crew mess room.

  • Ship-handling simulation system has been used for maritime traffic safety assessment for harbor and fairway. There exist various environmental conditions under which ship may navigate along a fairway or in harbor. Due to the time and budget limitations, however, ship-handling simulations are usually carried out for very limited number of environmental conditions. In this paper, statistical method for effective and systematic determination of real time simulation conditions is suggested and applied to the maritime traffic safety assessment problems. In the empirical study, the principal component analysis method and the concept of empirical cumulative distribution function are suggested to estimate synthetic navigational difficulty and to select simulation conditions which would impose high difficulty on shiphandling.

  • Recently the large sea bridge's construction crossing harbor and main ship's route have been propelled in the domestic so that it is active for the smoothly traffic flow of inland transportation and road user's convenience. However, it can bring about the trouble to ensure marine traffic safety if it is built that sea bridge's construction sets to an economy principle in the extension of the land road system. We're adopting Ship Handling Simulation in representative method for the influence assessment of marine traffic safety and danger elements beforehand. This research attempts to show the problems through the comparison and analysis of the reports relating to the sea bridge construction for 4 organization possessing Ship Handling Simulation. Finally, We offer the necessity of standardization on performing and assessment method of simulations.

  • Wave breaking phenomenon near the fore body of a ship is numerically simulated. The ship advance with uniform velocity in calm water. For the simulation, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation are adopted as governing equations. The simulation is carried out in staggered variable mesh system with finite difference method. Marker and Cell(MAC) method and Marker-Density method are employed to track the free surface. Body boundary conditions are satisfied with the adoption of porosity method and no-slip condition on the hull surface. The ship model has a wedge type fore-body, and the computational domain is an appropriate region around the fore-body. The computation results are compared with some experimental results. Also the difference of the free surface tracking methods are discussed.

  • This paper deals with the development of a simulation model for the container terminal, which consists of 3 berths, 8 container cranes, and 16 yard blocks with each yard crane and 90 yard trucks in order to evaluate the various operational rules. The proposed operational rules are 3 ship-dispatching rules, 3 berth allocation rules, 2 crane allocation rules, 2 yard allocation rules, and 2 yard truck allocation rules. These rules are simulated using 4 performance measures, such as ship time in the terminal, ship time in the port, the number of ships processed, and the number of containers handled. The simulation result is as follows: 1) there is no difference among 3 ship-dispatching rules, 2) berth allocation rules depend on performance measures, 3) dynamic crane allocation is better than fixed policy, 4) pooling yard allocation is better than short distance yard allocation rules, and 5) fixed yard truck allocation by berth is a little better than pooling policy.
