A Study about Analysis of Cause of several Capsized Sea Accidents by Rolling Motion Spectrum (Rolling Motion Spectrum 에 의한 해난 발생의 원인분석에 관한 연구)

  • Marine casualities in the high sea are mainly classified into the breakage of hull and capsize , of which the latter occurs frequently to a small craft and container vessels by extreme rolling. The aim of this study is to develop shiphandling techniques for the prevention of ship's large rolling by way of evaluating dangerous degree of rolling in heavy weather. In this study, rolling motion is analized by using statistical method as follow : (1) 8 sample ships is presented for calculation. (2) Analized sea state are Beaufort scale 7 and 10 (wind velocity 30kts and 50kts respectively) and significant wave height is put as 5.2m and 11.2m. (3) The formula recommended by International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) is used to calculated the wave spectrum. The results of this study are as follow : The results of this study are as follow : (1) Most of the vessels with beam of 20 meters or less was found to be capized in the waves abeam under the sea condition of Bearfort scale7(30kts). (2) For the vessels range 20m to 30m was found safe under the sea conditions of Bearfort scale 7(30kts) and imminent danger under the sea condition of Beaufort scale 11(50kts). (3) It is proved that any vessel could be capsized by heavy rolling regardless of vessel's size whenever the motion is synchronized with waves abeam. This study concludes that the navigator, especially at night , must anticipate the exact wave direction, referring to the wether report and coastaline, not to lay the vessel in the serial wave abeam.

On the Motion Characteristics of Small Trawler under Operation (소형 트롤 어선의 예망중 동요특성)

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on the dynamical characteristics of ship motion during trawling job on the real sea. The experiments were carried out on the small stern trawler, and roll and pitch motion of the ship according to the wave directions were simultaneously recorded by P/C in the same sea conditions. From these data, the statistical properties and power spectra were obtained, and then the analysis of ship motion in trwal job was made. As a result, it was found that the pitch motions in trwal job were displayed low amplitudes on the whole, but the rolling motions were displayed high amplitudes relatively, and very high value on the beam and quartering sea especially. Also, the trial ship has a high extinction coefficient in the roll motion, compared with the rule of stability, but when wave height takes 2.5m over, it can induce the safety of ship to scare occasionally. Therefore, a usefull countermeasure for the safety of ship has to be made adequately.

A Study on the Anti-rolling Effect of Stem Sub-body in the Stepped-Hull Planing Boat (스텝 붙이 활주형 모터보트 선미부가물의 횡요저감효과에 관한 연구)

  • It is hard to find experimental data for a model test of small high-speed planning boats. It is difficult to verify the performance seen in a model test for a high-speed boat because the ship-model scale-ratio is very small and the flow velocity of the circulating water channel and the X-carriage speed of the towing tank are restricted. Therefore most hull-form designs for high-speed small boats depend on the sea-trial test result for similar boats or evaluation through numerical calculations. This study investigated the anti-rolling effect of the stern sub-body in a 50-knot doss planning boat. To carry out this work, new model test procedures were set up in the actual sea. Using this method, the anti-rolling effect of the stern sub-body was investigated. A stern sub-body attached to a planning boat was proved to be effective in reducing the roll and pitch angle.

  • To predict rolling performance for a barge-type FPSO, the evaluation of correct nonlinear roll damping is critical. The squall section of FPSO causes a fair amount of viscous damping effect. Free roll decoy tests were conducted to estimate nonlinear roll damping for a barge-typ FPSO of three different loading conditions. The roll motion RAO was deduced by model tests in the wave condition of wideband spectrum. In numerical calculation, the quadratic damping was considered as equivalent linear damping using the results of free roll decay test. Tested roll performance in JONSWAP wave spectrum was compared with numerical results. These two results show good agreement, in spite of proximity in peak wave period and roll natural period.

  • In ship operation the consequence of roll and pitchingmotion can seriously degrade the performance of mechanical and personnel effectiveness. So many studies for the roll stabilization and trimming control system design have been performed and good results have been achieved where the stabilizing fins, tanks, rudders and flaps are used. However the ultimate objective of such approach should be focused on improving the boarding sensitivity. But there may exist many unsolved problems, for examples, ship control performance degradation and increasing of system complexity. So, the achieved control performance could not give us enough comfortable boarding sensitivity where the residual rolling and pitching motion are main drawbacks. To get rid of these disadvantages, the main hull control systems design approach has been considered using semiactive absorber. In this system, dampers, spring, dynamic dampers and control system with sensors are incorporated. In our system considered in this study, just two motors and control system with sensors are used for the bed. And the control system can be installed on each bed. So, we can control every bed on the specified control objective respectively. Above all, the good advantages of this system are the facts followed from simple idea and usefulness. Of course the structural modifications are needed. Considering disturbances, we design control system and verify the usefulness of developed system from the experimental study.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation of asymmetric impact effects on hydroelastic responses. A 1:64 scaled segmented ship model with U-shape open cross-section backbone was newly designed to meet elastic similarity conditions of vertical, horizontal and torsional stiffness simultaneously. Different wave heading angles and wavelengths were adopted in regular wave test. In head wave condition, parametric rolling phenomena happened along with asymmetric slamming forces, the relationship between them was disclosed at first time. The impact forces on starboard and port sides showed alternating asymmetric periodic changes. In oblique wave condition, nonlinear springing and whipping responses were found. Since slamming phenomena occurred, high-frequency bending moments became an important part in total bending moments and whipping responses were found in small wavelength. The wavelength and head angle are varied to elucidate the relationship of springing/whipping loads and asymmetric impact. The distributions of peaks of horizontal and torsional loads show highly asymmetric property.

  • A delivery ship is used to handle the cargo with the crane to/from the ships. The ship is inclined in the direction of a cargo which is hung on a crane. In this case, a arc shaped rail should be in the equilibrium state to get good anti-rolling performance. In this study, a device and control algorithm are developed to take accurate and quick equilibrium of the rail. The device is composed of a hinged immovable support, screw jack and damper. And the control system is based on I-PD control law to consider of control input saturation and overshoot. The controller is composed of integral controller of feedforward path and proportional-derivative controller of feedback path. The parameters of controller is designed to follow the reference signal and to remove overshoot. The simulation results show that the desirable control performance is achieved.

  • Shipping companies consider most of the ship turnaround time as a critical factor when selecting a rolling port for reducing costs. So, many researchers have been studying for the optimization of preplanning and high~performance of the Gantry Cranes (GCs) in container terminals for faster loading and unloading. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) based RTLS (Real-Time Location System) for reducing the ship turnaround time in ubiquitous port environment. In addition, pre-planning based on ubiquitous computing environment will support the GC and Yard Tractors (YTs), and reduce ship turnaround time more effectively. Especially, the proposed method enormously enhances the productivity of loading for the twin-lift system It will reduce the whole lead-time in the process of port logistics.

  • In spite of the methodology of evacuation process on vessels should be different comparing to the architecture on land, some have simulated the evacuations onboard ship with simulation tools which is developed only for the architecture.
