Knowledge about ice load distribution along the ship hull due to ship-ice interaction can provide important background information for the development of design codes for ice-going vessels. The objective of this study is to understand ship and ice interaction phenomena and determine the magnitude of ice load acting along a ship hull. The model tests were performed in the ice model basin in Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering (KRISO) with the model of icebreaking ship Araon. Self-propulsion tests in level ice were performed with three difference model ship speeds. In the model tests, three tactile sensors were installed to measure the spatial distribution of ice load acting at different locations on a model ship, such as the bow and shoulder areas. Variation in the distribution of ice load acting on a model hull with ship speed is discussed.

This paper presents the virtual mass method to implement the prediction of total resistance for ice-going ship in floe ice region based on the combined method of CFD and DEM. Two ways of floe ice distribution are adopted for the analysis and comparison. The synthetic ice model test has been conducted to determine the optimal virtual mass coefficients for the two different floe ice distributions. Moreover, the further verification and prediction are developed in different ice conditions. The results show that, the fixed and random distributions in numerical method can simulate the interaction of ship and ice vividly, the trend of total resistance varying with the speed and ice concentration obtained by the numerical simulation is consistent with the model test. The random distribution of floe ice has higher similarity and better accuracy than fixed distribution.
Flew control devices, such as flow liners, are frequently introduced in a cavitation tunnel in order to reduce the tunnel blockage effect, when a three-dimensional wake distribution is simulated using a complete ship model or a dummy model. In order to estimate the tunnel wall effect and to evaluate the effect of flow liners on the simulated wake distribution, a surface panel method is adopted for the calculation of the flow around a ship model and flow liners installed in a rectangular test section off cavitation tunnel. Calculation results on the Sydney Express ship model show that the tunnel wall effect on the hull surface pressure distribution is negligible for less than 5% blockage and can be appreciable for more than 20% blockage. The flow liners accelerate the flow near the afterbody of the ship model, so that the pressure gradient there becomes more favorable and accordingly the boundary layer thickness would be reduced. Since the resulting wake distribution is assumed to resemble the full scale wake, flow liners can also be used to simulate an estimated full scale wake without modifying the ship model. Boundary taper calculation should be incorporated in order to correlate the calculated wake distribution with the measured one.

A subsea pipeline designed across active shipping lane prones to failure against external interferences such as anchorage activities, hence risk assessment is essential. It requires quantifying the geometric probability derived from ship traffic distribution based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. The actual probability density function from historical vessel traffic data is ideal, as for rapid assessment, conceptual study, when the AIS data is scarce or when the local vessels traffic are not utilised with AIS. Recommended practices suggest the probability distribution is assumed as a single peak Gaussian. This study compares several fitted Gaussian distributions and Monte Carlo simulation based on actual ship traffic data in main ship direction in an active shipping lane across a subsea pipeline. The results shows that a Gaussian distribution with five peaks is required to represent the ship traffic data, providing an error of 0.23%, while a single peak Gaussian distribution and the Monte Carlo simulation with one hundred million realisation provide an error of 1.32% and 0.79% respectively. Thus, it can be concluded that the multi-peak Gaussian distribution can represent the actual ship traffic distribution in the main direction, but it is less representative for ship traffic distribution in other direction. The geometric probability is utilised in a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) for subsea pipeline against vessel anchor dropping and dragging and vessel sinking.
The ship wake generated by rotation of the propeller yields changes of characteristics of sound wave such as attenuation and scattering. To develope a battle field environment simulator for military purposes, it is very important to understand acoustical properties of ship wake. Existing research results have limitations in direct application because they performed under simple conditions or model ships were applied. In this study, we developed a ship wake generation model based on the ship's geometric wake distribution theory. The model can provide spatial distribution and void fraction with various marine environments as well as ship size. Through the developed model, geometric distribution features of ship wake according to the ship's maneuvering conditions were successfully simulated. In addition, changes of the bubble void fraction with time at any location within the battle field environment were identified. Therefore, the developed model is expected to be used in the development of a simulator to measure the acoustic characteristics of the ship wake.
An extensive research programme has been aimed at the effct of ship weight distribution on the ship responses applying ship hydroelasticity theory. In the previous works, consistent tendencies of the still-water and the wave bending moments. respectively, were found as the weight distribution was varied systematically. The paper is therefore concerned mainly with any correlation between still-water and wave bending moments with the variations of weight distribution. Although these bending moments share different features with each other, such a comparison of tendencies was plausible and informative. These and other matters for the future are discussed.
From time to time the light weight distribution has been discussed, It play an important part in the preliminary design state because of its influence on the available deadweight. Up to the past, the Light weight distribution acting on the ship has been estimated graphically by means of integraph or approximately by the simplified calculations. Recent development has made it possible to use Lloyd's coffin method or Robb's coffin method for Bulk Carrier, Tanker, Cargo ship where the hull weight is distributed based upon the $C_B$ The hull weight distribution is then super-composed by number of fixed weights(i.e. machinery , equipment, etc.) The authors built up the method by which the Light weight distribution is calculated using a computer. In the usual calculations, the higher accuracy is aimed at, the longer time would be taken, therefore the accuracy would not be so good as to be expected if the time is restricted. The method using a computer can dissolve these and calculated accurately in shorter time the Light weight distribution with less data.
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to seek some alternative to overcome difficult shipping situations for overcapacity pursuing economy of scale, which is widely spread in world shipping. Research design, data, and methodology - The research method to be adopted is first to review evolution of larger ships in terms of theoretical overview, and shipping market is examined, and it is studied some problems and solutions in relation to larger ship as field research aspects. Results - Supply and demand of shipping market is flexible and unpredictable nature of market. Sometime fierce competition has spread out the market, and shipowner may deploy mega ship in terms of economy of scale, etc., to overcome the difficult market situations. Both carrier and shipper have their own positions in this matter concerned. However, it causes some problems in the market including port matters, etc. Therefore, it is asked to solve this problems of larger ship employed in the markets, throughout shipping alliances, etc. Conclusions - Over tonnage done by larger ship has caused some problems in the shipping markets, forming monopolistic market by small number of larger shipping companies, destroying oligopolistic nature of shipping business, therefore, the answer is strategic alliance to collaborate each other.
Distribution features of foulers attached on 28 ships of 6 main shipping routes (SR) of the Far East Sea Basin were analyzed using various statistical methods. Collections obtained during 1976-1990 in the expeditions by the Institute of Marine Biology were used for the analyses. Samples were taken from the ships during anchorage by SCUBA diving and from dry-docks of Vladivostok ship-repairing yard. In all cases, the distribution patterns of most animals and algal species showed clear contagious patterns. Total biomass of fouling organisms and biomass of attached animals frequently increased along the horizontal direction of ship hulls, from the stem to the sternpost. Animal and algal species were usually located at different sites of the hulls. According to the increasing floating speed, there was, a clear tendency of the displacement in main fouling biomass from the stem to the stem. Any generalizations and deductions concerning the distribution patterns of the foulers from the same SR ships are not always substantiated, but one may see some similarities of the fouler distributions in many cases. Micro-scale turbulence generated by water flow around a ship hull for the distribution of fouling organisms is discussed.
