  • Objectives: The major objective of this study was to analyze insomnia after the change to consecutive day shift from day and night shift in a motor assembly factory. Materials: Data were collected at before and after shift system change through a survey conducted by a labor union. We analyzed transition of PSQI(Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) among 222 workers by separating the day shift week and night shift week. The cut-off point of insomnia was 8.5 on the PSQI. Results: Mean PSQI in the day shift week significantly did not decrease, going from $6.36{\pm}3.23$ to $6.46{\pm}3.00$(p=0.612 by paired t-test), Mean PSQI for night shift week significantly decreased from $8.31{\pm}3.36$ to $6.19{\pm}3.18$(p<0.001 by paired t-test). However, mean PSQI in the day shift week increased from $6.33{\pm}3.83$ to $7.11{\pm}2.86$ in ${\geq}50$ years(p=0.085, by repeated measured ANOVA). Mean PSQI score in the night shift week improved more in the married group(from $8.38{\pm}3.27$ to $6.12{\pm}3.18$) than in the non-married group(from $7.82{\pm}3.27$ to $6.12{\pm}3.18$)(p=0.038, by repeated measured ANOVA). Conclusions: The change to consecutive day shift improved insomnia in night shift. However, insomnia in the day shift week was worsened among those more than 50 years old.

  • The NMR shift arising from the electron angular momentum and electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum interactions has been investigated for a $4d^1$system in a strong crystal field environment of tetragonal symmetry. A general formula for NMR shift is used to compute the NMR shifts along the (100), (010), (001), (110) and (111) axes. We find that from the computed results, the NMR shift along the (100) and (010) axes is consistent with each other in a strong crystal field environment of tetragonal symmetry, but the NMR shift along the (001) axis is about triply greater in magnitude than those along the (100) and (010) axes and is opposite in sign to those along (100) and (010) axes. In this work, we express the expansion coefficients $a_1^{(i)}$ and $b_1^{(i)}$ of $A_i$ and $B_i$ in terms of $g_m^{(i)}$ and $h_m^{(i)}$ and two matrices $c_{lm}$ and $d_{lm}$ of radial dependence. The NMR shift is also separated into the contributions of multipolar terms. We find that $1/R^3$ term contributes dominantly to the NMR shift along the (100), (010), (001) and (110) axes while along the (111) axis $1/R^5$ term dominantly contributes. However, the contribtions of the other terms may not be negligible.

  • Melatonin hormone involved in human's circadian rhythm adjustment sensitively responds to light's specific short wavelength ratio. A shift worker's circadian rhythm disturbance and sleep disorder are caused by the existing lighting conditions, whose short wavelength ratio is fixed. The life pattern of a shift worker changes irregularly because of irregular working hours and the same lighting environment; thus, his/her concentration is reduced. For such a reason, negative effects ensue to the detriment of healthy everyday life, including a high risk of accidents or having unsound sleep after leaving work. A smartphone-based wavelength control LED lighting system that targets shift workers and that can easily measure and control lighting suitable for wake-sleep cycle, according to working hours and closing hours, is proposed in this paper. First, after the light characteristics of LED lighting that changes depending on light control ratio are measured through the color sensor installed on the smartphone and the externally-linked Mini-Spectrometer, they are stored in the database. Based on the stored optical characteristics data, the measurement module and light control module are implemented. Lighting is offered using a control ratio having the maximum rate of short wavelength in consideration of the target illuminance, classified according to work type by identifying working hours as time when waking is required for shift workers. After a shift work leaves work, the amount of lighting is varied, using a control ratio having a minimum short wavelength rate so that a shift worker can enter the sleep state naturally.

  • An online mean-shift object tracking algorithm, which consists of a learning stage and an estimation stage, is proposed in this work. The learning stage selects the features for tracking, and the estimation stage composes a likelihood image and applies the mean shift algorithm to it to track an object. The tracking performance depends on the quality of the likelihood image. We propose two schemes to generate and integrate likelihood images: one based on the discrete AdaBoost (DAB) and the other based on the real AdaBoost (RAB). The DAB scheme uses tuned feature values, whereas RAB estimates class probabilities, to select the features and generate the likelihood images. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm provides more accurate and reliable tracking results than the conventional mean shift tracking algorithms.

  • A tractor is a farm vehicle that is designed to provide a high tractive effort at low speed. It is used for versatile agricultural tasks such as hauling a trailer, tillage, mowing and construction work. As the intensity of work increases, tractors equipped with automatic transmission become popular due to the work convenience. Though manual and power shuttle transmissions are produced by domestic corporations, development for full-automatic power shift transmissions has never been challenged, and so related technology level is quite low. This paper gives a survey of the automatic transmissions from advanced foreign company, which includes layout of gear train, the way hydraulics controls clutches and brakes, electronic control system. The results are expected to be utilized as a basis in the development of original power train design for tractor.

  • When conducting an exposure assessment, the primary goal of the industrial hygienist is to fully characterize the worker's exposure during a work shift to compare it with an occupational exposure limit. This applies regardless of the duration of the work activity as an activity that is relatively short in duration can still present exposure in excess of the occupational exposure limit even when normalized over an 8-hr shift. This goal, however, is often impeded by the specification of a minimum sample volume in the published sampling method, which may prevent the sample from being collected or submitted for analysis. Removing the specification of minimum sample volume (or adjusting it from a requirement to a recommendation), in contrast, allows for a broader assessment of jobs that consist of short-duration and high-exposure activities and also eliminates the unnecessary practice of running sampling pumps in clean air to collect a specified, minimum volume.

  • Purpose: Work-related anxiety and depression are frequent work-related mental health problems. In this study the relationship between workplace violence and work-related anxiety and/or depression among Korean employees was evaluated. Methods: Data were obtained from the Korean Working Condition Survey of 2006. Participants were 9,094 Korean workers aged 15-64 yr. Multiple logistic regression using SAS version 9.1 was used. Results: The incidence of work-related anxiety, work-related depression and workplace violence were 4.5%, 3.5%, and 1.8% respectively. When personal and occupational risk factors were adjusted, workplace violence was significantly associated with work-related anxiety and depression (OR for anxiety: 4.07, CI: 2.62-6.34; OR for depression: 4.60, CI: 2.92-7.25). Work-related anxiety was significantly related to type of employment, working period at present workplace, work time, shift work, job demand, and social support from superiors. Factors influencing work-related depression were gender, education, alcohol consumption, company size, type of employment, working period at present workplace, work time, shift work, and job demand. Conclusion: To promote psychological health in workers there is a need to develop work-related anxiety and depression prevention programs and to decrease in workplace violence. In developing these programs, consideration should be given to personal factors, working conditions, and psychosocial working environments.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to review clinical characteristics and working environments of sudden cardiac death (SCD) cases associated with a tire manufacturer in Korea, and review possible occupational risk factors for cardiovascular disease including nanoparticles (ultrafine particles, UFPs). Methods: We reviewed (i) the clinical course of SCD cases and (ii) occupational and non-occupational risk factors including chemicals, the physical work environment, and job characteristics. Results: Possible occupational factors were chemicals, UFPs of rubber fume, a hot environment, shift work, overworking, and noise exposure. The mean diameter of rubber fume (63-73 nm) was (larger than diesel exhaust [12 nm] and outdoor dust [50 nm]). The concentration of carbon disulfide, carbon monoxide and styrene were lower than the limit of detection. Five SCD cases were exposed to shift work and overworking. Most of the cases had several non-occupational factors such as hypertension, overweight and smoking. Conclusion: The diameter of rubber fume was larger than outdoor and the diesel exhaust, the most well known particulate having a causal relationship with cardiovascular disease. The possibility of a causal relation between UFPs of rubber fume and SCD was not supported in this study. However, it is necessary to continue studying the relationship between large sized UFPs and SCD.

  • This study aimed to compare general and female health-related factor between day-work and shift-work worker. It is based on the data of the Korea National Health&Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) 2nd year on 7th period. The number of participants was 10,430. Out of the participants, 1,995 workers' dara was analyzed. The age, marital status, education level, occupational status and childbirth experience of female workers indicated significant differences between day and shift work. By contrast, health-related quality of life did not represent significant differences these factors; income, subjective health cognition, stress perception, depression experience, menarcheal age, menopausal age and breastfeeding period. The shift work is inevitably implemented as an industrial development and flexible work hours. Therefore, social and national attention and measures as well as those of individual workers are required to reduce the side effects from shiftwork.
