  • In this paper, FEM procedure is applied to the static and dynamic analyses of R/C structures. Simple R/C shell structure is solved by using FEM procedures and the experimental evaluations are performed to represent the applicability of FEM procedure to R/C structures. Also, R/C columns are analyzed numerically and experimentally. On the basis of these results, FEM procedures are applied to the R/C cooling tower structures assembled by huge R/C shell structure and a lot of discrete R/C columns. In this analysis, the parallel computing procedures are introduced into these analyses to reduce the computational effort. The dynamic performances of R/C cooling tower are also solved by the application of parallel computations as well. From the numerical analyses, the conventional FEM procedures combined with computational technologies enables us to design the huge R/C structures statically and dynamically.

  • This paper deals with the mechanical behaviour of the thin-walled cylindrical air-spring shell (CAS) made of rubber-textile cord composite (RCC) subjected to different types of loading. An orthotropic hyperelastic constitutive model is presented which can be applied to numerical simulation for the response of biological soft tissue and of the nonlinear anisotropic hyperelastic material of the CAS used in vibroisolation of driver's seat. The parameters of strain energy function of the constitutive model are fitted to the experimental results by the nonlinear least squares method. The deformation of the inflated CAS is calculated by solving the system of five first-order ordinary differential equations with the material constitutive law and proper boundary conditions. Nonlinear hyperelastic constitutive equations of orthotropic composite material are incorporated into the finite strain analysis by finite element method (FEM). The results for the deformation analysis of the inflated CAS made of RCC are given. Numerical results of principal stretches and deformed profiles of the inflated CAS obtained by numerical deformation analysis are compared with experimental ones.

  • This paper presents vibration and noise control of flexible structures using squeeze mode electro-rheological mounts. After verifying that the damping force of the ER mount can be controlled by the intensity of the electric fild, two different types of ER squeeze mounts have been devised. Firstly, a small size ER mount to support 3 kg is manufactured and applied to the frame structure to control the vibration. An optimal controller which consists of the velocity and the transmitted force feedback signals is designed and implemented to attenuate both the vibration and the transmitted forces. Secondly, a large size of ER mount to support 200 kg is devised and applied to the shell structure to reduce the radiated noise. Dynamic modeling and controller design are undertaken in order to evaluate noise control performance as well as isolation performance of the transmitted force. The radiated noise from the cylindrical shell is calculated by SYSNOISE using forces which are transmitted to the cylindrical shell through two-stage mounting system.

  • This paper deals with the instability analysis of concrete pipes conveying viscous fluid-nanoparticle mixture. The fluid is mixed by $AL_2O_3$ nanoparticles where the effective material properties of fluid are obtained by mixture rule. The applied force by the internal fluid is calculated by Navier-Stokes equation. The structure is simulated by classical cylindrical shell theory and using energy method and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Based on Navier method, the critical fluid velocity of the structure is calculated and the effects of different parameters such as fluid velocity, volume percent of nanoparticle in fluid and geometrical parameters of the pipe are considered. The results present that with increasing the volume percent of nanoparticle in fluid, the critical fluid velocity increase.

  • In this work, dynamic stability analysis of the ball after contacting with the earth in the volleyball game is presented. Via spherical shell coordinate, the governing equations and general boundary conditions of the ball after contacting with the earth in the volleyball game is studied. Via Comsol multi-physics simulation, some results are presented and a verification between the outcomes is studied. Harmonic differential quadrature method (HDQM) is utilized to solve the dynamic equations with the aid of boundary nodes of the current spherical shell structure. Finally, the results demonstrated that thickness, mass of the ball and internal pressure of the ball alters the frequency response of the structure. One important results of this study is influence of the internal pressure. Higher internal pressure causes lower frequency and hence reduces the stability of the ball.

  • There is a growing trend of considering uncertainty in optimization process since last few decades. In this regard, Robust Design Optimization (RDO) scheme has gained increasing momentum because of its virtue of improving performance of structure by minimizing the variation of performance and ensuring necessary safety and feasibility of constraint under uncertainty. In the present study, RDO of reinforced concrete folded plate and shell structure has been carried out incorporating uncertainty in the relevant parameters by Monte Carlo Simulation. Folded plate and shell structures are among the new generation popular structures often used in aesthetically appealing constructions. However, RDO study of such important structures is observed to be scarce. The optimization problem is formulated as cost minimization problem subjected to the force and displacements constraints considering dead, live and wind load. Then, the RDO is framed by simultaneously optimizing the expected value and the variation of the performance function using weighted sum approach. The robustness in constraint is ensured by adding suitable penalty term and through a target reliability index. The RDO problem is solved by Sequential Quadratic Programming. Subsequently, the results of the RDO are compared with conventional deterministic design approach. The parametric study implies that robust designs can be achieved by sacrificing only small increment in initial cost, but at the same time, considerable quality and guarantee of the structural behaviour can be ensured by the RDO solutions.

  • The adsorption features of fluoride ion on the oyster shell have been investigated for the purpose of the employment of waste oyster shell as an adsorbent for the treatment of fluoride ion-containing wastewater. The major component of oyster shell was examined to be Ca with minor components of Na, Si, Mg, Al, and Fe. As the initial concentration of fluoride ion was raised, its absorbed amount was enhanced at equilibrium, however, the adsorption ratio of fluoride ion compared with its initial concentration was shown to be decreased. Also, adsorption of fluoride ion onto the oyster shell resulted in the formation of $CaF_2$ in the morphological structure of adsorbent. Kinetic analysis showed that the adsorption reaction of fluoride ion generally followed a second order reaction with decreasing rate constant with the initial concentration of adsorbate. Freundlich model agreed well with the adsorption behavior of fluoride ion at equilibrium and the adsorption reaction of fluoride ion was examined to be endothermic. Several thermodynamic parameters for the adsorption reaction were calculated based on thermodynamic equations and the activation energy for the adsorption of fluoride ion onto oyster shell was estimated to be ca. 13.589 kJ/mole.

  • We have synthesized core-shell structured nanocrystals based on chalcopyrite-type $Cu_{0.2}InS_2$. The photoluminescence of the nanocrystals shows a significant blueshift in the emission wavelength by shell capping with ZnS layers. This shift can be explained with the compressive stress to core nanocrystals applied by the formation of a ZnS shell layer with a large lattice mismatch with the core. In this study, the emission wavelength could be tuned by changing the composition of the shell layers. Nanocrystals with emission wavelength ranging from 575 nm through 630 nm were synthesized by varying the portion of cadmium compared with zinc in the shell layers.
