Upgrade of Neutron Energy Spectrometer with Single Multilayer Bonner Sphere Using Onion-like Structure

  • Background: In order to measure neutron energy spectra, the conventional Bonner Sphere Spectrometers (BSS) are widely used. In this spectrometer, several measurements with different size Bonner spheres are required. Operators should, therefore, place these spheres in several times to a measurement point where radiation dose might be relatively high. In order to reduce this effort, novel neutron energy spectrometer using an onion-like single Bonner sphere was proposed in our group. This Bonner sphere has multiple sensitive spherical shell layers in the single sphere. In this spectrometer, a band-shaped thermal neutron detection medium, which consists of a LiF-ZnS mixed powder scintillator sheet and a wavelength-shifting (WLS) fiber readout, was looped to each sphere at equal angular intervals. Amount of LiF neutron converter is reduced near polar region, where the band-shaped detectors are concentrated, in order to uniform the directional sensitivity. The LiF-ZnS mixed powder has an advantage of extremely high light yield. However, since it is opaque, scintillation photons cannot be collect uniformly. This type of detector shows no characteristic shape in the pulse height spectrum. Subsequently, it is difficult to set the pulse height discrimination level. This issue causes sensitivity fluctuation due to gain instability of photodetectors and/or electric modules. Materials and Methods: In order to solve this problem, we propose to replace the LiF-ZnS mixed powder into a flexible and Transparent RUbber SheeT type $LiCaAlF_6$ (TRUST LiCAF) scintillator. TRUST LiCAF scintillator can show a peak shape corresponding to neutron absorption events in the pulse height spectrum. Results and Discussion: We fabricated the prototype detector with five sensitive layers using TRUST LiCAF scintillator and conducted basic experiments to evaluate the directional uniformity of the sensitivity. Conclusion: The fabricated detector shows excellent directional uniformity of the neutron sensitivity.

미니유화중합법에 의한 표면개질된 카본블랙의 마이크로캡슐화 (Microencapsulation of Surface-modified Carbon Black by Miniemulsion Polymerization)

  • 카본블랙은 토너수지, 잉크 및 복합재료 등에 광범위하게 산업적으로 응용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 분산 안정성을 증대시키기 위하여 카본블랙을 상 이동 촉매(phase transfer catalyst)를 이용한 상온에서의 산화반응을 통하여 카본블랙(CB)-수산화기(OH)를 제조하여 이에, silane coupling-agent인 p-methylacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane를 grafting시켜 말단에 이중결합을 가진 구조를 도입하였다. 이렇게 표면개질된 카본블랙을 미니유화중합법을 이용하여 고분자로 캡슐화를 진행하였다. 이러한 과정을 통하여 평균직경 100~500 nm 크기의 하이브리드 미립자를 제조하였다. 중합과정에 있어서 카본블랙의 표면 개질의 영향, 모노머의 종류, 개시제 및 유화제의 캡슐화 반응에 미치는 영향을 연구하였다.

확산길이에 따른 수동식 유기용제 시료채취기의 시료채취성능에 관한 연구 (Sampling Efficiency of Organic Vapor Passive Samplers by Diffusive Length)

  • Passive samplers have been used for many years for the sampling of organic vapors in work environment atmospheres. Currently, all passive samplers used in domestic occupational monitoring are foreign products. This study was performed to evaluate variable parameters for the development of passive organic samplers, which include the geometry of the device and diffusive length for the sampler design. Four prototype diffusive lengths; A-1(4.5 mm), A-2(7.0 mm), A-3(9.5 mm), A-4(12.0 mm) were tested for adsorption performances to a chemical mixture (benzene, toluene, trichloroethylene, and n-hexane) according to the US-OSHA's evaluation protocol. A dynamic vapor exposure chamber developed and verified by related research was used for this study. The results of study are as follows. The results in terms of sampling rate and recommended sampling time test indicate that the most suitable model was A-3 (9.5 mm diffusive lengths on both sides) for passive sampler design in time weighted average (TWA) assessment. Sampling rates of this A-3 model were 45.8, 41.5, 41.4, and 40.3 ml/min for benzene, toluene, trichloroethylene, and n-hexane, respectively. The A-3 models were tested on reverse diffusion and conditions of low humidity air (35% RH) and low concentrations (0.2 times of TLV). These conditions had no affect on the diffusion capacity of samplers. In conclusion, the most suitable design parameters of passive sampler are: 1) Geometry and structure - 25 mm diameter and 490 $mm^2$ cross sectional area of diffusion face with cylindrical form of two-sided opposite diffusion direction; 2) Diffusive length - 9.5 mm in both faces; 3) Amount of adsorbent - 300 mg of coconut shell charcoal; 4) Wind screen - using nylon net filters (11 ${\mu}m$ pore size).

최적 단면 치수를 가지는 복합재료 중공빔의 설계 (Design of Cylindrical Composite Shell for Optimal Dimensions)

  • 본 연구에서는 휠체어의 경량화를 위해 기존의 강관으로 제작된 휠체어를 피로파괴 및 손상에 강하고 방진 특성이 우수하며 유지 및 보수가 용이한 복합재료 중공빔으로 구성된 복합재료 휠체어로 대체하기 위하여 복합재료 중공빔 이론과 유전자 알고리즘을 적용하여 최적화된 등가 강성을 가지는 복합재료 중공빔의 최적의 단면 치수를 제시하였다. 제시한 최적의 단면치수를 가지는 복합재료 중공빔으로 구성된 휠체어 전체 구조에 Tsai-Wu 파손이론을 이용해 과하중이 가해지는 경우에 대하여 구조해석을 수행한 결과, 휠체어의 파손 유무를 나타내는 Makimum Tsai-Wu Failure Criteria Index가 파손이 발생하는 1.00보다 현저히 낮은 $0.192\times10^{-3}$을 나타내고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 기존의 강관을 동일한 강성을 가지는 복합재료 증공빔으로 대체하였을 경우 중공빔 중량을 최대 45%감소하는 효과를 얻을 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

복잡한 지질구조 지역에서의 3차원 탄성파 Attribute를 이용한 층서해석 사례 (3-Dimensional Sequence Interpretation of Seismic Attributes in the Structurally Complex Area)

  • 본 연구는 한국석유공사가 셸사(화란)와 공동탐사를 하고있는 남콘손분지에 대한 3차원 탐사작업의 일환으로 실시되었으며 구조가 매우 복잡한 동지역에서의 탄성파층서 해석 사례를 소개하고자 한다. 지질구조가 복잡한 지역에서는 탄성파상이나 시퀀스 경계면 형태(lap-out pattern)가 탄성파 자료상에 잘 나타나지 않으므로 Exxon Group(Vail et at., 1977)등이 개발한 탄성파 층서 분석법의 한계점이 있다. 이러한 지역에서는 시추공의 층서분석 결과와 탄성파 Attribute 및 등층후도 등을 이용하여 탄성파 층서 분석을 실시할 수 있다. 연구결과 탄성파 Attribute는 시퀀스 및 시스템트랙면의 고퇴적 환경과 암상변화와 대비가 되며 등층후도 및 구조도를 사용하여 시스템트랙 내부의 층서변화와 대비가 가능하였다. 또한 Azimuth Attribute를 사용하여 탄화수소의 이동경로 등을 예측할 수 있었다. 이러한 층서분석 결과를 종합하여 저류암, 덮개암, 구조형성시기, 및 탄화수소의 이동경로 등에 대한 리스크를 계산하는데 이용하였다.

Ultralow-n SiO2 Thin Films Synthesized Using Organic Nanoparticles Template

  • In an original effort, this lab attempted to employ polystyrene nanoparticles as a template for the synthesis of ordered and highly porous macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films, utilizing their high combustion temperature and narrow size distribution. However, polystyrene nanoparticle thin films were not obtained due to the low interaction between individual particles and between the particle and silicon substrate. However, polystyrene-polyacrylic acid (PS-AA) colloidal particles of a core-shell structure were synthesized by a one-pot miniemulsion polymerization approach, with hydrophilic polyacrylic acid tails on the particle surface that improved interaction between individual particles and between the particle and silicon substrate. The PS-AA thin films were spin-coated in the thickness ranges from monolayer to approximately $1.0\;{\mu}m$. Using the PS-AA thin films as sacrificial templates, macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films were successfully synthesized by vapor deposition or conventional solution sol-gel infiltration methods. Inspection with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed that the macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films consist of interconnected air balls (~100 nm). Typical macroporous $SiO_2$ thin films showed ultralow refractive indices ranging from 1.098 to 1.138 at 633 nm, according to the infiltration conditions, which were confirmed by spectroscopy ellipsometry (SE) measurements. This research shows how the synthetic control of the macromolecule such as hydrophilic polystyrene nanopaticles and silicate sol precursors innovates the optical properties and processabilities for actual applications.

Full-scale tests and finite element analysis of arched corrugated steel roof under static loads

  • Arched Corrugated Steel Roof (ACSR) is a kind of thin-walled steel shell, composing of arched panels with transverse small corrugations. Four full-scale W666 ACSR samples with 18m and 30m span were tested under full and half span static vertical uniform loads. Displacement, bearing capacities and failure modes of the four samples were measured. The web and bottom flange in ACSR with transverse small corrugations are simplified to anisotropic curved plates, and the equivalent tensile modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio of 18m span ACSR were measured. Two 18 m-span W666 ACSR samples were analyzed with the Finite Element Analysis program ABAQUS. Base on the tests, the limit bearing capacity of ACSR is low, and for half span loading, it is 74-75% compared with the full span loading. When the testing load approached to the limit value, the bottom flange at the sample's bulge place locally buckled first, and then the whole arched roof collapsed suddenly. If the vertical loads apply along the full span, the deformation shape is symmetric, but the overall failure mode is asymmetric. For half span vertical loading, the deformation shape and the overall failure mode of the structure are asymmetric. The ACSR displacement under the vertical loads is large and the structural stiffness is low. There is a little difference between the FEM analysis results and testing data, showing the simplify method of small corrugations in ACSR and the building techniques of FEM models are rational and useful.

이중 유제 방법으로 제조된 PLGA 미립자들과 반구체:특성과 라니티딘(ranitidine)의 방출 양상 (PLGA particles and half-shells prepared by double emulsion method: characterization and release profiles of ranitidine )

  • PLGA micro/nano particles encapsulating ranitidine as a hydrophilic model drug were prepared by the double-emulsion solvent evaporation method. Surface morphology investigation by scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the emulsification by sonication could produce nanoparticles, whereas microparticles were prepared using high speed homogenizer. Moreover, while nanohalf-shell structure instead of spherical nanoparticle could be produced by adding poloxamer into oil phase (MC) with PLGA 504H, the addition of poloxamer didn't change particle shape in case of PLGA 502H. On the other hand, microparticle with poloxamer had more surface pores than those without poloxamer. The size and polydispersity (PDI) of particles were determined by particle size analyzer. Effective diameters of particles were in the range of $400{\sim}800\;nm$ and $1200{\sim}3300\;nm$ in case of nanoparticles and microparticles, respectively. Encapsulation efficiencies were in the range of $1.2{\sim}2.9%$. The addition of poloxamer produced the particles with higher encapsulation efficiency. In vitro release study in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) at $37^{\circ}C$ showed common large initial burst release. However, the relative slower release profile could be observed in case of microparticles. Poloxamer addition increased the release rate, which was thought to be related to the increased surface area of particles.

저서생물상을 이용한 진해만 수하식 양식장의 저서환경 평가 (Assessment of benthic environment conditions of oyster and mussel farms based on macrobenthos in Jinhae bay)

  • 본 조사는 유기오염원으로 지적되고 있는 진해만내 수하식 양식장을 대상으로 저서생물상을 이용한 환경 평가를 실시하여 저서환경내 유기오염 양상을 측정하였다. 굴과 진주담치 양식장과 양식활동이 이루어지지 않은 대조구 등 세 개 정점을 대상으로 퇴적물 특성과 저서동물을 조사하였다. 세 지역 모두 평균 입도분포가 6.0~6.6Ф로 니질 퇴적상을 나타냈다. 퇴적물 내 유기물 함량은 진주담치 양식장이 2.8%로 놀게 나타났으며, 대조구의 경우 1.5%로 나타났다 총 7개 동물군, 79종의 저서동물이 채집되였으며, 대조구가 양식장에 비하여 저서생물의 종 다양성과 서식밀도가 높은 상이한 군집구조를 나타냈다. 특히, 굴과 진주담치 양식장에서는 퇴적물내 유기물 함량이 높은 지역에 나타나는 기회종으로 알려진 Lumbrlneris longlfolia, Heteromastus. filiformis, Corophium sinenie 등이 우점하였다. 계절별로 종조성과 서식밀도에서 다소 차이를 보임에도 불구하고, 생물상을 이용한 환경평가 결과에서는 진주담치 양식장의 경우 대조구나 굴 양식장에 비해 유기오염이 진행되고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

쇄빙선의 내충격 특성에 관한 실험적 연구: 제2부 선체 구조의 충격 굽힘 특성 (Study on Crashworthiness of Icebreaker Steel: Part II Ship Side Structural Behavior Due to Impact Bending)

  • The first part of this study found the tendencies of the mechanical properties of two arctic structural steels (EH32 and FH32). In the second part, the crashworthiness of stiffened panels scaled down from the side frame structure of a Korean research icebreaker was determined. A procedure for designing the shapes and sizes of the stiffened panels, mass and shape of a drop striker, and a large temperature chamber, and then manufacturing these, is introduced in detail. From impact bending tests for the stiffened panels, the residual permanent deformations and deformation histories over time were captured using manual measurement and video image analyses. Numerical simulations of the impact bending tests were carried out for three different finite element models, which were mainly composed of shell elements, solid elements, and solid elements, with welding beads. It was proven from a comparison of the test results and numerical simulation results that the solid element model with the welding bead consideration approached the test results in terms of the residual deformations as long as the strain rate effect was taken into account.
