In order to invstigate the influence of die design variables on the quality of the sheared surface in cutting of sandwich sheet metals, the cut-off operation is carried out, which is the typical shearing process in sheet metal forming technology. For experiments we made the cut-off die which can be easily adjusted for die design variables such as blankholding force, pad force and clearance. The sandwich sheet metals considered are clad304(STS304-Al1050-STS304) and anti-vibration sheet metal. The shearing process is visualized by the computer vision system installed in front of the cut-off die and the sheared surface is measured and quantitatively compared with the help of the optical microscope after cut-off operation. From test results it is shown that the shearing mechanisms are different according the material of which sandwitch sheet metal is composed. The influence of die design variable is explored and we found optimal conditions for both sandwich sheet metals. It is expected that this investigation can be utilized to get the better sheared surface.

This paper presents the development of a new inchworm actuation system using the shearing deformation of the piezoelectric actuators. In this new actuation system, piezoelectric shearing/expanding actuators, an inertial mass and an advanced preload system are configured innovatively to generate the motion of an inertial mass. There are two modes in the new actuation system: (1) stick mode, and (2) clamp mode. In stick mode, the deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators drives an inertial mass by means of the friction force at their contact interface. On the other hand, in clamp mode, the piezoelectric expanding actuators provide the gripping force to an inertial mass and, as a result, eliminate its backward motion following the rapid backward deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed new actuation system, the experimental system is built up, and the static performance evaluation and dynamic analysis are conducted. The open-loop performance of the linear motion of the proposed new actuation system is evaluated. In dynamic analysis, the mathematical model for the contact interface is established based on the LuGre friction model and the equivalent parameters are identified.
The effect of shearing speed on the shear force and energy of Sn-0Ag-0.5Cu solder ball was investigated. Various UBM (under bump metallurgy)'s on Cu pads were used such as ENEPIG (Electroless Nickel, Electroless Palladium, Immersion Gold; Ni/Pd/Au), ENIG (Electroless Nickel, Immersion Gold; Ni/Au), OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative). To fabricate a shear test specimen, a solder ball, $300{\mu}m$ in diameter, was soldered on a pad of FR4 PCB (printed circuit board) by a reflow soldering machine at $245^{\circ}C$. The solder bump on the PCB was shear tested by changing the shearing speed from 0.01 m/s to 3.0 m/s. As experimental results, the shear force increased with a shearing speed of up to 0.6 m/s for the ENIG and the OSP pads, and up to 0 m/s for the ENEPIG pad. The shear energy increased with a shearing speed up to 0.3 m/s for the ENIG and the OSP pads, and up to 0.6 m/s for the ENEPIG pad. With a high shear speed of over 0 m/s, the ENEPIG showed a higher shear force and energy than those of the ENIG and OSP. The fracture surfaces of the shear tested specimens were analyzed, and the fracture modes were found to have closer relationship with the shear energy than the shear force.

The orthogonal cutting method of the nodular graphite cast iron in the lathe turning, whose matrix were formulated under two kinds of annealing conditions, has been experimentally studied and the results investigated. The various characteristics of machinabilities of the nodular cast iron, depending upon its matrix, have been obtained from the results as follows. (1) As depth of cut increases, the cutting ratio and the shear angles tend to slightly increase, and as the containing quantity of ferrite matrix increases, they slightly decrease. (2) As depth of cut increases, the cutting force increases in an approximate straight line, and as the containing quantity of ferrite matrix increases, they decreases and the decreasing rate is about 20-30%. (3) As the containing quantity of ferrite matrix increases, the friction force acting on the tool face decreases and the decreasing rate is about 34-40% in case of the lower depth of cut, but in case of the higher depth of cut the decreasing rate is very small. (4) Both shearing force and vertical force show a lineal increases, and according as ferrite matrix increases there is a decrease by 25% in shearing force and a 12-25% decrease in vertical force. (5) Shearing speed and chip flow speed keep almost a constant value irrespective of matrix.
The effect of high shear speed on shear force, shear energy and fracture surface was investigated for the solder joint of a $Sn-_{3.0}Ag-_{0.5}Cu$ ball. For both ENIG and OSP pads, the shear force increased with an increase in shearing speed to 0.3 m/s. However, for an ENEPIG pad, the shear force increased with an increase in shear speed to 0.6 m/s and kept almost constant afterward. The shear energy decreased with an increase in shearing speed for ENIG and OSP pads. For the ENEPIG pad, however, the shear energy almost remained constant in a shearing speed range 0.3-3.0 m/s. The fracture mode analysis revealed that the amount of brittle fracture for the ENIG and the OSP pads increased with shearing speed, and a complete brittle fracture appeared at 1.0 m/s for ENIG and 2.0 m/s for OSP. However, the ENEPIG pad showed only a ductile fracture until 0.25 m/s, and a full brittle fracture didn't occur up to 3.0 m/s. The fracture mode matched well with the shear energy. The results from the high speed shear test of SAC305 were similar to those of SAC105.

Previously, we had experimented on the model of stow net under the various combination including water velocity, spherical floats and elevating floats with the shearing hoods instead of the upper beam, however we couldn't concern with their characteristics. Spherical floats maintain their buoyancy at the same level when the speed increases, only the drag increases and effects some reduction in the fishing height. To eliminate this shortcoming, floats have to some hydrodynamic lifting force which increases with increasing speed. Phillips float with a dish-shaped metal plate welded on at the lower part and synthetic upthrusting float were used for the experiment to compare with their characteristics. Six kinds of model shearing hood depend on the angle of attack were used to test the characteristic of the shearing hood. According to their results, when the angle of attack is 30\ulcorner, the lift and drag coefficient reveal 1. 36, 0.84 respectively. And also experimented on the 5X8cm shearing hood to investigate the suitability for the model stow net.
The liquid metal shearing device was constructed and assembled with a commercial high-pressure die-caster in order to induce intensive turbulent shearing force on molten aluminum alloys. The effect of the liquid metal shearing on the microstructure and tensile properties of A356 alloys was investigated with the variation of iron content. The experimental results show that dendritic primary ${\alpha}$-Al phase was effectively modified into a equiaxed form by the liquid metal shearing. It was also found that the needle-like ${\beta}$-AlFeSi phase in a Fe containing A356 alloy was changed into a blocky shape resulting in the improved mechanical properties. Based on the mechanical properties, it was suggested that the iron content in A356 alloy could be more widely tolerated by utilizing the liquid metal shearing HPDC process.
This reasearch was performed to provide the fundamental intonation for the mechanization of Korean pine cone harvest when the shoot shearing method is adopted. Shear force and stress of pine cone shoots were measured and analyzed for this purpose. Samples are selected along their harvesting time and tested in 17 levels of shoot diameter from 10 to 26mm with 1mm increment. 1) Shear force-deformation characteristics showed that shoot reached its rupture point after 2 to 4 of bio-yield points. It was supposed that these multiple bio-yield points were caused by the discrete compression of wood parts which are composed of water, nutrient, resin, etc. 2) Required shear force to shear shoot was proportional to the square of shoot diamter, however, shear force for shoots of early harvesting time(Aug. 31) was proportional to the shoot diameter. Variance of shear force was increased as the harvesting time was delayed. Shear forces were distributed from 468N(Aug. 31, 12mm dia) to 4153N(Aug. 31, 26mm dia) disregarding the sampling date. 3) The average shear stresses by sampling dates were 744,822, and 883N/m2, respectively, and for the earlier shoot samples shear stress was quite smaller than the others. Shear stress was proportional to shoot diameter squared, and the effect of shoot diameter on the shear stress was decreased as harvesting time was delayed.

We investigated, via atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, the effect of shear force on the interfacial morphology of a reactive bilayer polymer system composed of PS-mCOOH and PMMAGMA. It has been observed that in the absence of oscillatory shearing the roughness of the interface increased with reaction period, while at large values of ${\gamma}_{0}\;and\;{\omega}$ it became less than that observed in the absence of oscillatory shearing. This observation may be attributable to the possibility that oscillatory shearing might have hindered the diffusion of polymer chains, which are located away from the interface, to the interface of the layers. However, the effect of ${\gamma}_{0}\;and\;{\omega}$ on the roughness of the interface of (PS-mCOOH)/(PMMA-GMA) bilayer is found to be quite different.
