  • Bond between reinforcing bar and surrounding concrete is supposed to transfer load safely in the process of design of reinforced concrete structures. Bond strength of ribbed reinforcing bars tends to split concrete cover, by wedging action, or shear the concrete in front of the ribs. In this study, using a reducing bearing angle theory, bond strengths of beam end specimen are predicted. Values of bond strength obtained using the analytical model are in good agreement with the bond test results. The analytical model provides insight into bond mechanism and the effects of bearing angle on the bond strength of deformed bars to concrete.

  • Single fiber pull-out technique has been commonly used to characterize the mechanical behavior of interface in fiber reinforced composite materials. An improved analysis considering the effects of transversely isotropic properties of fiber and the effects of thermal residual stresses in both radial and axial directions along the fiber/matrix interface is developed for the single fiber pull-out test. Although the stress transfer properties across the interface is not much affected by considering the transversely isotropic properties of fiber, interfacial debonding is notably encouraged by the effect. The interfacial shear stress that plays an important role in interfacial debonding is very much affected by the component of axial thermal residual stress in the bonded region, which can induce a two-way debonding mechanism.

  • Characteristics of the flow and heat transfer in a channel of 37 rods are investigated numerically. The flow is taken to be a fully developed incompressible laminar flow and it has an uniform temperature profile at the inlet and flows down through the channel of constant wall temperature. A boundary-fitted coordinate system is used for the complex geometry. Calculation is initiated by calculating the developed flow profile and then proceeds to temperature development. Through the calculation the details of the flow and temperature distribution characteristics are found, and discussion is made on the mechanism of the transport phenomena in the complex geometry in terms of wall shear stress distribution, non-dimensionalized velocity, friction factor, Nusselt number distribution, Reynolds number, and porosity. Also the effects of the eccentricity in rod configuration are analyzed and its importance is emphasized.

  • Earth's magnetopause separating the fast and often turbulent magnetosheath and the relatively stagnant magnetosphere provides various forms of free energy that generate low-frequency surface waves. The source mechanism of this energy includes current-driven kinetic physical processes such as magnetic reconnection on the dayside magnetopause and flux transfer events drifting along the magnetopause, and velocity shear-driven (Kelvin-Helmholtz instability) or density/pressure gradient-driven (Rayleigh-Taylor instability) magnetohydro-dynamics (MHD) instabilities. The solar wind external perturbations (impulsive transient pressure pulses or quasi-periodic dynamic pressure variations) act as seed fluctuations for the magnetopause waves and trigger ULF pulsations inside the magnetosphere via global modes or mode conversion at the magnetopause. The magnetopause waves thus play an important role in the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling, which is the key to space weather. This paper presents recent findings regarding the generation of surface waves (e.g., Kelvin-Helmholtz waves) at the Earth's magnetopause and analytic and observational studies accountable for the linking of the magnetopause waves and inner magnetospheric ULF pulsations, and the impacts of magnetopause waves on the dynamics of the magnetopause and on the inner magnetosphere.

  • The composite beam connections often encountered fracture failure in the welded bottom flange joint, and a bottom flange bolted connection has been proposed to increase the deformation ability of the bottom flange joint. The seismic performance of the bottom flange bolted composite beam connection was suffered from both the composite action of concrete slab and the asymmetric load transfer mechanisms between top and bottom beam flange joints. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive numerical study on the working mechanism of the bottom flange bolted composite beam connections. Three available modelling methods and a new modelling method on the flange-stud-slab interactions were compared. The efficient numerical modeling method was selected and then applied to the parametric study. The influence of the composite slab, the bottom flange bolts, the shear composite ratio and the web hole shape on the seismic performance of the bottom flange bolted composite beam connections were investigated. A hogging strength calculation method was then proposed based on numerical results.

  • With the substantial increase of the size of structure, the management of excavation becomes more difficult. Therefore, massive collapses which are related to retaining wall recently increase. However, since the study on measuring and monitoring the pre-stressing force of anchor is insufficient, behavior of anchor may not be predicted and monitored appropriately by the existing strain gauge and load cell type monitoring system. FBG Sensor, which is smaller than strain gauge and has better durability and does not have a noise from electromagnetic waves, is adapted to measure the strain and pre-stressing force of 7-wire strand, so called smart tendon. A series of pullout tests were performed to verify the feasibility of smart tendon and find out the load transfer mechanism around the steel wire tendon fixed to rock with grout. Distribution of measured strains and estimated shear stresses are compared with those predicted by theoretical solutions. It was found that developed smart tendon can be used effectively for measuring strain of 7-wire strand anchor and theoretical solutions underestimate the magnitude of shear stress and load transfer depth.

  • Three-dimensional(3D) numerical analyses have been conducted to study the behaviour of a single pile to adjacent tunnelling conducted in the lateral direction of the pile. In the numerical analyses, the interaction between the tunnel, the pile and the soil next to the pile has been analysed. The study includes the pile settlement, the relative shear displacement between the pile and the soil, the shear stresses at the soil next to the pile and the axial force on the pile. In particular, the shear stress transfer mechanism along the pile related to the tunnel advancement has been rigorously analysed. Due to changes in the relative shear displacement between the pile and the soil next to the pile during the tunnel advancement, the shear stress and the axial force distributions along the pile have been changed. Downward shear stress developed above the tunnel springline (Z/L=0.0-0.7~0.8), while upward shear stress is mobilised below the tunnel springline (Z/L=0.7~0.8-1.0) resulting in compressive force on the pile, where Z is the pile location and L is the pile length. Maximum compressive force of about $0.475P_a$ was developed on the pile after completion of tunnel advancement, where $P_a$ is the allowable pile capacity. Some insights into the pile behaviour to tunnelling obtained from the numerical analyses will be reported and discussed.

  • The objective of the present study is to evaluate the shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement at the concrete interfaces with smooth construction joint. The transverse reinforcing bars were classified into two groups: V-type for the arrangement perpendicular to the interface and X-type for inclined-crossing arrangement. The transverse reinforcement ratio at the interface varied from 0.0045 to 0.0135 for V-type and 0.0064 to 0.0045 for X-type. The mechanism analysis proposed for monolithic concrete interface, derived based on the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity, was modified to evaluate the shear friction capacity of concrete interfaces with smooth construction joint. Test results showed that the specimens with X-type reinforcement had lower amount of relative slippage at the interface and higher shear friction capacity than the companion specimens with V-type reinforcement. This observation was independent of the unit weight of concrete. The mean and standard deviation of the ratios between the experimental shear friction strength of smooth construction joints and predictions obtained from the proposed model are 1.07 and 0.14, respectively.

  • DBS method of underground works can reduce the term of works for manufacturing the underground members in factory and producing members in modularization, apart from that, the horizontal member could be used as permanent members, which are the advantages of this method. As the component element of DBS method, in order th transfer the vertical load on horizontal member to the column during the construction or in service, developed ${\sharp}$ shaped double beam-column connection is dominated by shear failure in the complicated state of multi-axial stresses. In this study, in order to check the shear-failure mechanism of ${\sharp}$ shaped connection of double beam-column and an increase of shear internal force with the thickness of the steel plate. 7 specimens were made and one-way static tests. All of the specimens were subjected to brittle failure. Constraint of slab will increase its shear strength by 1.06${\sim}$1.48 times. Shear strength of slabs with different constraints steel plate in two-way increase more than which are same. So the slab with different constraints steel plate will be more effective.

  • The RC corbels with the ratio of shear span-to-effective depth less than 1 are commonly used to transfer loads from beams to columns. The ultimate strengths and structural behaviors of RC corbels are controlled by the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, strength of concrete, shape and quantity of the reinforcement, and geometry of corbels. In this study, a simple indeterminate strut-tie model reflecting all characteristics of the ultimate strengths and complicated structural behaviors is presented for the design of RC corbels. In addition, a load distribution ratio, defined as a magnitude of load transferred by a horizontal truss mechanism, is proposed to help structural designers perform the design of RC corbels by using the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes. The ultimate strengths of 30 RC corbels tested to failure are evaluated by using the ACI 318-05's strut-tie model code for the validity check of the proposed indeterminate strut-tie model and load distribution ratio.
