As energy consumption of building and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions have been emphasized, phase change materials(PCM) have been introduced as building materials due to its high heat storage performance. Using shape-stabilizing technique, octadecane/xGnP shape-stabilized PCM(SSPCM) can prevent leakage and improve heat storage performance. The objectives of this study are to propose mix design method of concrete mixed with SSPCM and to evaluate mechanical behaviors of the concrete mixed with SSPCM manufactured according to the proposed mix design. Based on the previously reported material test result, the existing mix design of plain concrete(Concrete standard specification, 2009) is modified to consider reduction of strength in concrete due to the addition of SSPCM. To verify the proposed mix design, specimens are fabricated according to the proposed mix design and axial strength tests and three-point loading tests are performed. Test results show that compressive strengths of the tested specimens reach the designed strength even when two different mix ratios of SSPCM are used. From three-point loading tests, flexural stresses decrease as mix ratio of SSPCM increases.
In building structure, the story height can be minimized by providing openings in beams which serves for the utility equipments passing through. The dead space in false ceiling thus put to economical use in the form of a substantial reduction in materials and construction cost. In the case of steel structure, there is no critical risk in the structural strength because of reinforcing methods of stiffness and steel plate but in the case of reinforced concrete structure, proper provision should be made in designing these openings, otherwise there is a risk that these opening will possibly weaken the structural strength of the building frame to a critical degree. In this paper, for the numerical analysis of the reinforced concrete beams with circular opening in the web, expecting stress concentration of the circular opening, reinforcing methods were studied. Twenty test pieces with each different reinforcing methods were tested and their resisting forces were defined. From the numerical analysis and test results, the followings were founded;(1)high shear stress distributed around the openings reduce the shearing strength, (2)from the numerical analysis, the maximum tensile stress occurred at opening nodes 1,7, these phenomena were agreed with the test results, (3)reinforcing method around openings have to carried out for stopping diagonal cracks, and (4)both, by steel plate, and wire mesh, are effective reinforcing methods.
A shear connection between the steel beam and concrete slab determines the stability of composite beams. An extensive numerical study to evaluate the resistance of the shear connection in a solid slab at high temperature was conducted. Three-dimensional thermo-mechanical finite element models were developed using a dynamic explicit method and concrete damaged plasticity model. Temperature-dependent plasticity parameters of the concrete model were proposed, and the accuracy of the developed model was obtained against experimental data. This investigation has revealed that a stud shearing failure occurs regardless of temperatures, and its shearing location changes in accordance with a rise in temperature. A new strength reduction formula has been presented to estimate the resistance of the shear connection at high temperatures.
The cut slope sliding which has been frequently encountered in Pohang area has been reported due to the rapid reduction of shear strength in mudstone after being exposed to the air. Mudstone has characteristics that it has high enough strength and stiffness in a dry condition, but the strength and stiffness decrease in a wet condition with groundwater infiltration. The case study in this paper shows that mudstone which had enough strength in a boring stage has lost the strength after installing PRD steel pipe pile inducing an insufficient bearing capacity, which has been ascertained by the static load test. Test construction has been performed to investigate the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone with various methods such as MSG (Micro Silica Grouting) around the tip and side of a pile, the perimeter grouting combined with Micro pile reinforcement, and concrete filling after tip reinforcing grouting. From the test construction, MSG has been turned out to be the most favorable method for increasing a pile bearing capacity in mudstone, which has been confirmed by the static load test.

This paper highlights the importance of carrying out global slope stability analysis as part of design calculations for geosynethetic walls in tiered configuration. Four design case histories were selected to examine the appropriateness of their design by performing additional slope stability analyses using the shear strength reduction method with in the frame work of finite element analysis. The results indicated that all of the walls examined, which were designed to meet the current design guide lines, did not satisfy the global slope stability requirement, and that longer reinforcements are required in the upper tiers to achieve the minimum factor of safety. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.
Considerable part of reinforced concrete building has suffered from destructive earthquakes in Turkey. This situation makes necessary to determine nonlinear behavior and seismic performance of existing RC buildings. Inelastic response of buildings to static and dynamic actions should be determined by considering both flexural plastic hinges and brittle shear hinges. However, shear capacities of members are generally neglected due to time saving issues and convergence problems and only flexural response of buildings are considered in performance assessment studies. On the other hand, recent earthquakes showed that the performance of older buildings is mostly controlled by shear capacities of members rather than flexure. Demand estimation is as important as capacity estimation for the reliable performance prediction in existing RC buildings. Demand estimation methods based on strength reduction factor (R), ductility (${\mu}$), and period (T) parameters ($R-{\mu}-T$) and damping dependent demand formulations are widely discussed and studied by various researchers. Adopted form of $R-{\mu}-T$ based demand estimation method presented in Eurocode 8 and Turkish Earthquake Code-2007 and damping based Capacity Spectrum Method presented in ATC-40 document are the typical examples of these two different approaches. In this study, eight different existing RC buildings, constructed before and after Turkish Earthquake Code-1998, are selected. Capacity curves of selected buildings are obtained with and without considering the brittle shear capacities of members. Seismic drift demands occurred in buildings are determined by using both $R-{\mu}-T$ and damping based estimation methods. Results have shown that not only capacity estimation methods but also demand estimation approaches affect the performance of buildings notably. It is concluded that including or excluding the shear capacity of members in nonlinear modeling of existing buildings significantly affects the strength and deformation capacities and hence the performance of buildings.
Purpose: Considering the rising frequency of earthquakes in Korea, it is crucial to revise the rainfall thresholds for landslide triggering following earthquake events. This study was conducted to provide scientific justification and preliminary data for adjusting rainfall thresholds for landslide early warnings after earthquakes through soil physical experiments. Method: The study analyzed the change in soil shear strength by direct shear tests on disturbed and undisturbed samples collected from cut slopes. Also, The study analyzed the soil strength parameters of remolded soil samples subjected to drying and wetting conditions, focusing on the relationship between the degree of saturation after submergence and the strength parameters. Result: Compaction water content variation in direct shear tests showed that higher water content and saturation in disturbed samples led to a significant decrease in cohesion (over 50%) and a reduction in shear resistance angle (1~2°). Additionally, during the ring shear tests, the shear strength was observed to gradually decrease once water was supplied to the shear plane. The maximum shear strength decreased by approximately 65-75%, while the residual shear strength decreased by approximately 53-60%. Conclusion: Seismic activity amplifies landslide risk during subsequent rainfall, necessitating proactive mitigation strategies in earthquake-prone areas. This research is anticipated to provide scientific justification and preliminary data for reducing the rainfall threshold for landslide initiation in earthquake-susceptible regions.
Earthquake is one of the factors to affect the stability of geotechnical structures. Numerous past earthquakes have shown that earthquakes have taught that damage of soil structures could occur on fine soils as well as coarse soils. For that reason, earthquake-induced decreasing tendency for strength on both coarse and fine soils has been investigated using direct simple shear (DSS) tests in laboratory. Based on the testing results the decreasing tendency for strength on coarse and fine soils is clearly identified in terms of the concept of volume decrease potential and plasticity index, respectively. Most of the soils except the weathered soil have shown similar reduction tendency of strength with the increasing number of cycles. Liquefaction strength of coarse and fine soils appears to decrease with the increment of volume decrease potential and the decrement of plasticity index, respectively. Reduction of strength on the weathered soil is particularly remarkable rather than others, which might be owing to the collapse phenomenon. From the DSS test results for soils, proposed is a simple method to evaluate strength decrement with the increasing number of cycles, and it can help estimate decrement of strength with the number of cycles easily.

Cyclic simple shear test apparatus was used to investigate the dynamic response of liquefiable soils as reclamation material. The specimen were reclamation using simple air-pluviation method. The confining stress was applied the range of 100 kpa to 200 kpa. The resulted strain was in the range of $10^{-3}$ ~ 5 %. Based on these test results modulus reduction curve, damping curve and cyclic strength curve were developed. The developed curves were compared to those already available in literature. The obtained curves can be applied to FEM or equivalent linear analysis such as SHAKE for ground response analysis.

There are many cuts or natural rock slopes that remain stable for a long time in the natural environment with steep slopes ($65^{\circ}$ to $85^{\circ}$). In terms of design practice, the rock mass consisting of similar rock condition and geological structures is defined as a good continuum rock slope, and during the process of decision making angle of this rock slope, it will be important to establish the geotechnical properties estimating method of the continuum rock on the process of stability analysis in the early stages of design and construction. In this study, the stability analysis of a good continuum rock slope that can be designed as a steep slope proposed a practical method of estimating the shear strength by induced from the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, and in addition, the design applicability was evaluated through the stability analysis of steep rock slope. The existing method of estimating the shear strength was inadequate for practical use in the design, as the equivalent M-C shear strength corresponding to the H-B envelope changes sensitively, even with small variations in confining stress. To compensate for this problem, it was proposed to estimate equivalent M-C shear strength by iso-angle division method. To verify the design applicability of the iso-angle division method, the results of the safety factor and the displacement according to the change in angle of the cut slope constructed at the existing working design site were reviewed. The safety factor is FS=16~59 on the 1:0.5 slope, FS=12~52 on the 1:0.3 slope, most of which show a 10~12 percent reduction. Displacement is 0.126 to 0.975 mm on the 1:0.5 slope, 0.152 to 1.158 mm on the 1:0.3 slope, and represents an increase of 10 to 15%. This is a slightly change in normal proportion and is in good condition in terms of stability. In terms practical the working design, it was confirmed that applying the shear strength estimated by Iso-angle division method derived from the H-B failure criterion as a universal shear strength for a good continuum rock mass slope was also able to produce stable and economic results. The procedure for stability analysis using LEM (Limit Equilibrium Analysis Method) and FEM (Finite Element Analysis Method) will also be practical in the rock slope where is not distributed fault. The study was conducted by selecting the slope of study area as a good rock condition, establishing a verification for which it can be applied universal to a various rock conditions will be a research subject later on.
