  • There are many problems in application of FRP reinforcing bars as shear reinforcement, since bending of FRP bars is not a feasible process on construction site. Even though FRP bars can be manufactured in bent shape, they have lower strength at bent location. However, there are no serious problems to use FRP bars as flexural reinforcement. Plates or slabs like bridge decks, in general, do not need shear reinforcements. These types of members with FRP flexural reinforcement have lower shear strength than those with conventional steel flexural reinforcement. However, reliable process or equation for shear strength estimation of FRP reinforced concrete without shear reinforcement are not established, yet. In this study, predicted shear strength obtained from available design equations and assessment equations are compared with 211 experimental results. The results showed that among the current design codes, the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (ISE) provided the best estimation. ACI 440.1R-06 provided conservative results with degree of dispersion similar to that of ISE. In addition, regression analysis on the collected experimental results was conducted to develop regression models. As a result, a new reliable shear strength equation was proposed.

  • The flat dilatometer test (DMT) is a geotechnical tool to estimate in-situ properties of various types of ground materials. The undrained shear strength is known to be the most reliable and useful parameter obtained by DMT. However, the existing relationships which were established for other local deposits depend on the regional geotechnical characteristics. In addition, the flat dilatometer test results have been interpreted using three intermediate indices - material index $(I_D)$, horizontal stress index $(K_D)$, and dilatometer modulus (E$_{D}$) and the undrained shear strength has been estimated merely using the horizontal stress index $(K_D)$. In this paper, the applicability of the flat dilatometer to Korean soft clay deposit has been investigated. Then an artificial neural network was developed to evaluate the undrained shear strength by DMT and the ANN, based on the $p_0, p_1, p_2, {\sigma '}_v$ and porewater pressure. The ANN which adopts the back-propagation algorithm was trained based on the DMT data obtained from Korean soft clay. To investigate the feasibility of ANN model, the prediction results obtained from data which were not used to train the ANN and those obtained from existing relationships were compared.

  • The anisotropy of soils has an important effect on stress-strain behavior. In this study, an attempt has been made to implement artificial neural network model for modeling the stress-strain relationship and predicting the undrained shear strength of normally consolidated clay with varying consolidation pressure ratios. The multi-layer neural network model, adopted in this study, utilizes the error back-propagation loaming algorithm. The artificial neural networks use the results of undrained triaxial test with various consolidation pressure ratios and different effective vertical consolidation pressure fur learning and testing data. After learning from a set of actual laboratory testing data, the neural network model predictions of the undrained shear strength of the normally consolidated clay are found to agree well with actual measurements. The predicted values by the artificial neural network model have a determination coefficient$(r^2)$ above 0.973 compared with the measured data. Therefore, this results show a positive potential for the applications of well-trained neural network model in predicting the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils.

  • Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) are light in weight, non-corrosive and exhibits high tensile strength. FRPs having superior material properties to corrosive steels have been widely replacing steel bars or tendons used in concrete structures as flexural reinforcements. Although current design guidelines for estimating shear strength of FRP concrete beam follow the format of conventional reinforced concrete design method, there are noticeable differences among the existing formulas in calculating the contributions of concrete to shear resistance. In this paper, the artificial neural network (ANN) technique is employed as an analytical alternative to existing methods for predicting shear capacity of FRP concrete beams. Influential factors on shear strength were identified through literature review and input in ANN and the ANN was trained for the target ultimate shear obtained from database. The results from ANN were compared with existing formulas for its accuracy. It was found that the developed ANN were more closely predicting the test data than those of the currently available predictive equations.

  • The shear strength and strain of reinforced concrete beams are predicted by using the Transformated-Angle Truss-Model. This proposed analytical method simplified the fixed-angle softened-truss model (FA-STM) and removed the limitation of applicability of the FA-STM. The results of the proposed method for reinforced concrete beams were compared to those of the FA-STM.

  • This paper concerns the prediction of shear capacity, as governed by steel failure and concrete breakout failure, of set anchors installed in plain concrete. For this purpose, the methods to evaluate the shear capacity of the set anchors in concrete are summarized and the experimental data are compared with capacities by the two present methods : the method of ACI349-90 and the Concrete Capacity Design (CCD) method. (1) The constant-0.684 in the steel strength equation of set anchor was determined from shear test data at the 5 percent fractile probability. Consequently, it was concluded that the constant-0.6 and 0.5 in the steel strength equation for steel failure of ACI318-02 and EOTA were safe. The nominal shear strength of set anchor was proposed as following. $V_s=0.684 A_{se}f_{ut}$. (2) The CCD method was considered reasonable in estimating the concrete breakout strength of set anchors. In terms of the CCD method, the nominal concrete breakout strength of set anchor in shear was provided as follows; $V_b=0.609(\frac{\iota}{d_o})^{0.2}\sqrt{d_0}\sqrt{f_c}(c_1)^{1.5}$(N). (3) The CCD method was considered reasonable in estimating the concrete breakout strength for spacing of set anchors. The proposed equation was considered safe in estimating the concrete breakout strength for spacing of set anchors.

  • In structural design provision, maximum punching shear stress of slabs is prescribed as combined stress in direct shear occurred by gravity load and eccentric shear occurred by unbalanced moment. This means that the effect of unbalanced moment is considered to decide the punching shear stress. However, from the resistance capacity standpoint, the effect of unbalanced moment strength is not considered for deciding punching shear strength. In this paper, a model considering interrelation between unbalanced moment and punching shear was proposed. In the model, the relation between load effect and resistance capacity in unbalanced moment and punching shear was two-dimensionally expressed. Using the interrelation model, a method how unbalanced moment strength should be considered to decide the punching shear strength was proposed. Additionally, effective width enlargement factors for deciding the unbalanced moment strength of flat plates with shear reinforcements were proposed. The interrelation model proposed in this paper is very effective for the prediction of the behavior of slab-column connection because not only punching shear and unbalanced moment strengths but also failure modes of flat plates can be accurately predicted.

  • In the present study, a numerical analysis was performed for interior connections of continuous flat plate to analyze the effect of design parameters such as column section shape, gravity load and slab span on the behavioral characteristics of the connections. For the purpose, a computer program for nonlinear FE analysis was developed, and the validity was verified. Through the parametric study, the variations of shear stress distribution around the connection were investigated. According to the result of numerical analysis, as the length of the cross section of column in the direction of lateral load increases and gravity load increases, the effective area and the maximum shear strength providing the torsional resistance decrease considerably. And as the slab span loaded with relatively large gravity load increases, the negative moment around the connection increases and therefore the strength of connection against unbalanced moment decreases. By considering the effect of design parameters on the strength of the connections, the effective shear strength to calculate the torsional moment capacity of connection was proposed and the effectiveness of the proposed shear strength was verified.

  • A series of dilatometer test, field vane test, and $CK_0U$ triaxial test were performed for clayey soils of Busan new port site to develop the relationships between undrained shear strength and the DMT results. Normalized undrained shear strength is turned out to be $S_{u(CKU)}/{\sigma}'_v=0.30{\sim}0.35\;for\;CK_0U$ triaxial test and ${\mu}S_{u(VST)}/{\sigma}'_v=0.20{\sim}0.22$ for vane shear test. By comparing the undrained shear strength estimated from DMT indices with the results measured by in-situ vane test or $CK_0U$ triaxial test, two methods to predict the undrained shear strength from DMT results are suggested. One is based on the relationship between $S_u/{\sigma}'_v$ and horizontal stress index (KD) while another method comes from $N_c-I_D$ and $N_c-E_D$ correlation. It was observed that the method based on $N_c-I_D\;or\;N_c-E_D$ relation shows slightly better accuracy than the one based on $K_D$ although all of the methods suggested in this study provided comparable values of predicted undrained shear strength. Since the definitions of $I_D\;and\;E_D$ contain $p_1-p_0$, in which soil condition is reflected, it is believed that the prediction method using $N_c$ is capable of taking a material type into consideration.
