Failure modes result in fracture or tearing, which may cause deterioration of resistance and reduction of inelastic deformation capacity. The potential failure modes for Special Concentrically Braced Frames (SCBFs) include fracture or tearing of the brace, net section fracture of the brace or gusset plate, fracture of the gusset plate welds, shear fracture of the bolts, block shear, excessive bolt bearing deformation, and buckling of the gusset plate. HSS tubular braces are commonly used in SCBFs, and net section fracture of the tubular brace may also occur through the brace net section at the end of the slot cut into the tube to slip over the gusset plate. This failure mode is categorized as a tension failure mode, and may cause dramatic loss of resistance and brittle behavior. Net section reinforcement is required according to AISC design specifications (AISC 2001). In this paper, the need to reinforce the net section area was discussed. Initially, the results of the net section fracture tests done by the University of California in Berkeley were presented with the modeling of these tests using FE models. To investigate the possibility of net section fracture in an actual frame, the slot end hole model was adapted to the frame FE model, and alternate near-fault histories were applied with tension-dominated cycles, since previous analyses showed that loading history was the most critical factor in net section fracture. The need for this reinforcement (cover plate) and the tension-dominated near-fault history were investigated.
The change of water level in reservoirs is an important factor causing failure of bank slopes, i.e. landslide. The water level of Three Gorges reservoir in China fluctuate between 145 m and 175 m, as a matter of flood control. During its normal operational state, the rate of water level fluctuation is supposed to range from 0.67 m/d to 3.0 m/d. Majiagou slope is located on the left bank of Zhaxi River, 2.1 km up from the outlet. Zhaxi River is a tributary of the Yangtze River within the Three Gorges area, of which the water level changes with the reservoir. At the back of Majiagou slope, a 20 m long and 3~10 cm wide fissure developed just after the reservoir water level rose from 95 m to 135 m in 2003. This big fissure was a full suggestion of potential failure of this slope. In this study, the pore water pressure files obtained from seepage analysis were used to evaluate the change in factor of safety (FS) with reservoir water level. Slope stability analyses then were carried out, with fully specified slip surface and limit equilibrium method. In the limit equilibrium analysis, the contribution of negative pore water pressure to shear strength was considered by the use of Fredlund's shear strength equation for unsaturated soils. On the base of the analyses, the change of FS with reservoir water level was interpreted in detail. It was found that FS against bank slopes decreases with the rise of the reservoir water level and increases with the drawdown of the reservoir water level. The most dangerous state was when the reservoir water level stays at the highest for a long time.
Purpose: A static loading test was performed to evaluate the ultimate flexural strength of a girder in which 80MPa high-strength concrete was synthesized on the compressive flange of the I-shape steel girder. Method: This test is designed and fabricated two types of specimens with different shear-connection specifications, and evaluated their ultimate flexural behavior until reaching the extreme event limit states. In addition, the ultimate strength was evaluated by comparing the test results and the results of the strain compatibility method. Result: By confirming the displacement within 0.02mm as a result of the relative slip measurement, it was verified that the two specimens secured perfect bonding. Therefore, the difference in the shear specification does not have a great effect on the stiffness, and if the specimens are completely synthesized, there is no difference in the behavior until it reaches the extreme-event limit states. Conclusion: The girder to be tested has a working load within the elastic range and meets the usability requirements for allowable deflection. Therefore, even if a part of the casing is subjected to the tensile force at the level of cracking, the deck will first reach the compression failure due to the role of the reinforcing bar.
In order to measure yield stress of PIM feedstocks simply and effectively, a yield stress measuring technique was developed by a vane method. The vane method had an advantage that there was no wall-slip, while it had a drawback that it could not measure viscosity change at various shear rates. A Newtonian fluid was tested for the appropriateness of the measuring technique. The end effect of a vane was checked to produce an acceptable error. The torque peak has been considered to be developed at yielding of non-Newtonian fluids with yield stress. However, it was influenced very much by control system of the instrument so that the torque value at the stable region was taken to calculate yield stress. Torque at zero rotational speed was obtained by extrapolating the torque values at various speeds to remove the effect of the rotational drag. As general verification, yield stress of feedstocks made of Tungsten carbide powder with wax-based binder was measured at different temperatures and various powder concentrations.

Rubber is one of the most commonly used materials in various fields because of its unique viscoelastic properties. Friction occurs when a tire constantly makes contact with the ground. As a result, friction causes wear. The frictional energy caused by friction is a primary factor in the wear mechanism. The frictional energy is affected by various conditions (temperature, roughness of ground, shape of rubber, load, and materials). In this study, the analysis was preceded by considering the vertical load and the horizontal velocity to the rubber using ABAQUS/explicit. The contact pressure, and friction energy are derived using the shear force and slip distance. The actual behavior of the rubber test data were compared with the analysis results.
The study area, Bophi Vum, Myanmar, is composed of the harzburgite, serpentinite and dunite, those are covered by Quaternary alluvium. The chromite ore bodies are developed within dunite and harzburgite bodies, mainly within dunite bodies. To identify the extension of the chromite ore bodies, we carried out trench surveys in the 5 different sites. The chromite ore bodies have 0.3-1.5 m wide, and several meters of extension, and deformed strongly as a sigmoid and a boudin shapes with dunite and harzburgite bodies by ductile deformation. The ductile deformation have a top-to-the-west shear sense, indicating the existence of a westward thrusting. The NW-SE trending distribution of ore bodies is related to the dextral ductile shearing and/or to the block rotation as a book-shelf structure by dextral strike-slip movement.

In this paper, the cyclic soil behavior model. which can accommodate the cyclic hardening, was developed by modifying the original parallel IWAN model. In order to consider the irrecoverable plastic strain of soil. the cyclic threshold strain, above which the backbone curve deviates from the original curve, was defined and the accumulated strain was determined by summation of the strains above the cyclic threshold in the stress-strain curve with applying Masing rule on unloading and reloading curves. The isotropic hardening elements are attached to the original parallel IWAN model and the slip stresses in the isotropic hardening elements are shown to increase according to the hardening functions. The hardening functions have a single parameter to account for the cyclic hardening and are defined by the symmetric limit cyclic loading test in forms of accumulated shear strain. The model development procedures are included in this paper and the verifications of developed model are discussed in the companion paper.

In this study, the ground motion was synthesized using the finite fault model by the stochastic green function method, and the difference in the ground motions was evaluated by using various values of the source parameters. An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.5 was assumed for the example fault model. The distribution of the slip in the fault plane was calculated using the statistical data of the asperity area. The source parameters considered in this study were the location of the hypocenter in the fault plane and the ratio of the rupture to the shear wave velocity, the rise time, the corner frequency of the source spectrum, and a high frequency filter. The values of the parameters related to the stochastic element source model were adjusted for different tectonic regions, and the others were selected for several possible cases. The response spectra were constructed from the synthesized ground motion time history and compared with the different parameter values. The frequency range affected by each parameter and the differences of the spectral accelerations were evaluated.
In the stability analysis of hillside slopes, the roots of vegetation have been considered to act as a soil reinforcement. In order to predict the amount of increase in soil shear resistance, produced by tensile strength of roots that intersect a potential slip surface in hillside slopes, new soil -root interaction models are proposed in this paper. For this purpose, firstly, laboratary teats and in-situ tests wert performed on soil-root systems, and experimental results were compared with a couple of soil-root interaction models which had been proposed by Gray, Waldron, and Wu etc. Based on this comparison, a new soil-root interaction model is proposed. Secondly, a probabilistic soil-root model is proposed based on statistical analysis considering random nature of root distribution, root characteristics, and soil-root interactions. Finally, to examine the effect of this root reinforcement system on stability of hillside slopes, a simple three-dimensional stability analysis was performed, and it was shown that root reinforcement had a significant stabilizing influence on shallow slips rather than deep slips in hillside slopes.
An experimental study was performed to investigate the earthquake resistance of the beam-column connections as a part of a precast concrete moment-resisting frame that uses precast concrete U-shaped shells for the beams. Five full-scale precast concrete specimens and one conventional monolithic concrete specimen were tested under cyclic loading. The parameters for this test were the reinforcement ratio, stirrup spacing, and end-strengthening details of the precast beam shell. The test results showed that regardless of the test parameters, the precast concrete beam-column connections showed good load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity, which were comparable to those of conventional monolithic concrete specimen. However, at large deformations, the beam-column connections of the precast concrete specimens were subjected to severe strength degradation due to diagonal shear cracks and the bond-slip of re-bars at the joint region. For this reason, the energy dissipation capacity and stiffness of the precast concrete specimens were significantly less than those of the cast-in-place specimen.
