The effects of Triangle Groove Strips (TGS) on Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) suppression of marine riser are numerically investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method. The range of Reynolds number in simulations is 4.0 × 104 < Re < 1.2 × 105. The two-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model are used to calculate the flow around marine riser. The Newmark-β method is employed for evaluating the structure dynamics of marine riser. The effect of the height ratio (ε) of TGS on VIV suppression is evaluated. The amplitude responses, frequency responses, vortex patterns and the flow around the structures are discussed in detail. With the increase of the height ratio of TGS, the suppression effect of TGS on VIV suppression is improved firstly and then weakened. When ε=0.04, the suppression effect of TGS is the best. Compared with the VIV responses of smooth marine riser, the amplitude ratio is reduced by 38.9%, the peak of the lift coefficient is reduced by 69% and the peak of the drag coefficient is reduced by 40% when Re=6.0 × 104. With the increase of Reynolds number, the suppression effect of TGS on VIV suppression is improved firstly and then weakened. When the Reynolds number is 7.0 × 104, the amplitude ratio can be reduced by 40.1%. As to the large-amplitude vibration cases, the TGS show nice suppression effect on VIV.

Seabed beneath and near the coastal structures may undergo large excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components in the case of long durations of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If the liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually fail. Especially, the seabed liquefaction behavior beneath a gravity-based structure under wave loading should be evaluated and considered for design purpose. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using 2-dimensional numerical wave tank. The 2-dimensional numerical wave tank was expanded to account for irregular wave fields, and to calculate the dynamic wave pressure and water particle velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the structure. The simulation results of the wave pressure and the shear stress induced by water particle velocity were used as inputs to a FLIP(Finite element analysis LIquefaction Program). Then, the FLIP evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the analysis, when the shear stress was considered, the liquefaction at the seabed in front of the structure was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance force, scour can possibly occur on the seabed. Therefore, the strength decrease of the seabed at the front of the structure due to high wave loading for the longer period of time such as a storm can increase the structural motion and consequently influence the stability of the structure.
This paper presents a 1:25 multi-freedom aero-elastic model for a high lighting pole at the Zhoushan stadium. To validate the similarity characteristics of the model, a free vibration test was performed before the formal test. Beat phenomenon was found and eliminated by synthesis of vibration in the X and Y directions, and the damping ratio of the model was identified by the free decay method. The dynamic characteristics of the model were examined and compared with the real structure; the similarity results were favorable. From the test results, the major along-wind dynamic response was the first vibration component. The along-wind wind vibration coefficient was calculated by the China code and Eurocode. When the peak factor equaled 3.5, the coefficient calculated by the China code was close to the experimental result while Eurocode had a slight overestimation of the coefficient. The wind vibration coefficient during typhoon flow was analyzed, and a magnification factor was suggested in typhoon-prone areas. By analyzing the power spectrum of the dynamic cross-wind base shear force, it was found that a second-order vortex-excited resonance existed. The cross-wind response in the test was smaller than Eurocode estimation. The aerodynamic damping ratio was calculated by random decrement technique and the results showed that aerodynamic damping ratios were mostly positive at the design wind speed, which means that the wind-induced galloping phenomenon is predicted not to occur at design wind speeds.

In this study we proposed a simplified finite element model of anchor bolt system inserted through concrete structures considering clamping forces. The three different finite element types using LS-DYNA are applied for numerical efficiency of the anchor bolt modeling. Combined beam and solid elements are used to reflect the tension state at internal part of anchor bolt due to torques. The clamping forces due to torques are considered by introducing a compression for a nut plane modeled by beam elements. The numerical examples show good agreement with different element types. Parametric studies are focused on the various effects of different element types on the induced axial and shear forces of anchor bolts considering clamping forces.

Strength anisotropy is a typical feature of thin-bedded rock masses and their strength will be degraded subjected to water immersion effect. Such effect is crucial for the operation of hydropower plant because the impoundment lifts the water level of upstream reservoir and causes the rock mass of nearby slopes saturated. So far, researches regarding mechanical property of natural thin-bedded rock masses and their strength variation under water immersion based on field test method are rarely reported. This paper focuses on a thin-bedded stratified rock mass and carries out field test to investigate the mechanical property and strength variation characteristics. The field test is highlighted by samples which have a large shear dimension of 0.5 m*0.5 m, representing a more realistic in-situ situation than small size specimen. The test results confirm the anisotropic nature of the concerned rock mass, whose shear strength of host rocks is significantly larger than that of bedding planes. Further, the comparison of shear strength parameters of the thin-bedded rock mass under natural and saturated conditions show that for both host rocks and bedding planes, the decreasing extent of cohesion values are larger than friction values. The quantitative results are then adopted to analyze the influence of reservoir impoundment of a hydropower plant on the surrounding rock mass stability of diversion tunnels which are located in the nearby slope bank. It is evaluated that after reservoir impoundment, the strength degradation induced incremental deformations of surrounding rock mass of diversion tunnels are small and the stresses in lining structure are acceptable. It is therefore concluded that the influences of impoundment are small and the stability of diversion tunnels can be still achieved. The finings regarding field test method and its results, as well as the numerical evaluation conclusions are hoped to provide references for rock projects with similar concerns.

This study presents the current status of DECOVALEX-2023 project Task G and our research results so far. Task G, named 'Safety ImplicAtions of Fluid Flow, Shear, Thermal and Reaction Processes within Crystalline Rock Fracture NETworks (SAFENET)' aims at developing a numerical method to simulate the fracture creation and propagation, and the coupled thermohydro-mechanical processes in fracture in crystalline rocks. The first research step of Task G is a benchmark simulation, which is designed for research teams to make their modelling codes more robust and verify whether the models can represent an analytical solution for displacements of a single rock fracture. We reproduced the mechanical behavior of rock and embedded single fracture using a three-dimensional grain-based distinct element model for the simulations. In this method, the structure of the rock was represented by an assembly of rigid tetrahedral grains moving independently of each other, and the mechanical interactions at the grains and their contacts were calculated using 3DEC. The simulation results revealed that the stresses induced along the embedded fracture in the model were relatively low compared to those calculated by stress analysis due to stress redistribution and constrained fracture displacements. The fracture normal and shear displacements of the numerical model showed good agreement with the analytical solutions. The numerical model will be enhanced by continuing collaboration and interaction with other research teams of DECOVALEX-2023 Task G and validated using various experiments in a further study.

This study analytically analyzed the impact of underground structure displacement behavior on track damage due to adjacent excavation work, ground deterioration, and changes in groundwater level. The concrete track that was the subject of the study was analyzed for sleeper floating track(STEDEF) and precast concrete slab track(B2S). Sleeper floating track is a track structure in which the concrete bed and sleepers are voided. precast concrete slab track is a track structure that induces the elastic behavior of the rail by assembling rails and fasteners using slabs. For numerical analysis, each concrete track, from rail to concrete bed, was modeled as three-dimensional elements. In addition, the displacement behavior of the underground structure was set as a variable to analyze the damage effect on the concrete bed. Using numerical analysis, the concrete bed stress due to uplift and subsidence was analyzed, and the level of crack effect was analyzed by comparing it to the tensile strength and shear strength. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the sleeper floating track was more vulnerable than the precast concrete slab track when the same uplift and subsidence occurred. In addition, uplift and subsidence, it was analyzed that the cracks range in the sleeper floating track was large.
The first Korean earthquake resistant design code was enacted in 1988. In the code, the soil factor which takes into account both the soil amplification factor and the soil -structare interaction effect is divided into three groups : soil factor, 5 : 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5. In order to assist in choosing the soil factors appropriately in the earthquake resistant design, the local site effects on the based shear force induced by earthquakes are considered in depth for typical soil conditions in Korea. The depth of the alluvial and/or weathered zone is usually not deep and the fresh rock is found at depth shallower than 20 meters, and even at about 10 meters around Seoul. One dimensional wave propagation theory and the elastic half space method are used to obtain the soil -structure interaction effect as well as the soil amplification effect. The kinematic interaction effect due to scattering of waves by pile foundation is also considered. Finally, the soil factor is recommended for each soil condition from loose state to dense, and also from shallow soil depth to deep, so that the designer can choose the factor with-out difficulty.

In the Francis turbine, the leakage flow through the runner gaps which are between the runner and the stator structure influences the internal flow and hydraulic performance. Thus, the investigation for the flow characteristics induced by the runner gaps is important. However, the runner gaps are often disregarded by considering the time and cost of the numerical analysis. Therefore, in this study, the flow characteristics according to runner gaps of the Francis turbine model were investigated including the leakage flow of the runner cone. The three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analyses were conducted using a scale-adaptive simulation shear stress transport as a turbulence model for observing the influence of the leakage flow on the internal flow and hydraulic performance. The efficiencies were decreased slightly with runner gaps; and the complicated flows were captured in the gaps.
This paper deals with the low velocity impact response and dynamic stresses of composite sandwich truncated conical shells (STCS) with compressible or incompressible core. Impacts are assumed to occur normally over the top face-sheet and the interaction between the impactor and the structure is simulated using a new equivalent three-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) spring-mass-damper (SMD) model. The displacement fields of core and face sheets are considered by higher order and first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), respectively. Considering continuity boundary conditions between the layers, the motion equations are derived based on Hamilton's principal incorporating the curvature, in-plane stress of the core and the structural damping effects based on Kelvin-Voigt model. In order to obtain the contact force, the displacement histories and the dynamic stresses, the differential quadrature method (DQM) is used. The effects of different parameters such as number of the layers of the face sheets, boundary conditions, semi vertex angle of the cone, impact velocity of impactor, trapezoidal shape and in-plane stresses of the core are examined on the low velocity impact response of STCS. Comparison of the present results with those reported by other researchers, confirms the accuracy of the present method. Numerical results show that increasing the impact velocity of the impactor yields to increases in the maximum contact force and deflection, while the contact duration is decreased. In addition, the normal stresses induced in top layer are higher than bottom layer since the top layer is subjected to impact load. Furthermore, with considering structural damping, the contact force and dynamic deflection decrees.
