  • An experimental study was carried out to examine the behavior of the unsteady boundary layer. An NACA 0012 airfoil with aspect ratio of 2.7 was set vertically in a test section, which is sinusoidally pitched about the quarter chord. The oscillating amplitude is from -6$^{\circ}$ to +6$^{\circ}$ and the mean angle of attack is 0$^{\circ}$. Surface mounted probes (Glue-on probes) were employed to measure the surface flow of the boundary layer. Measurements were made at free-stream velocities of 1.98, 2.83, and 4.03m/s, and the corresponding Reynolds numbers based on the chord length were 2.3$\times$104, 3.3$\times$104 and 4.8$\times$104, respectively. The reduced frequency is fixed as 0.1 in all cases. The results show that the surface position of minimum shear stress and of boundary layer break-down can be discerned in the Reynolds number between 2.3$\times$104 and 3.3$\times$104.

  • Polystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared via latex technology and the effect of nanotube length on rheological properties were investigated. Monodisperse PS particle was synthesized by the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization and two types of MWCNTs were used after surface modification to improve dispersion state and to remove impurities. Final nanocomposites were prepared by the freeze-drying process after dispersing the PS particles and the surface-modified MWCNTs in a ultrasonic bath. The effects of MWCNT content and nanotube length on rheological properties were evaluated by imposing the small-amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The PS/MWCNT nanocomposites showed that rheological properties were enhanced as the amount and length of MWCNT increased. It is speculated that the rheological characteristics of nanocomposites change from liquid-like to solid-like as the MWCNT amount increases, and the critical concentration to achieve network structure decreases as the nanotube length increases.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of various turbulence models on the aerodynamic noise of an air-conditioner (AC) indoor unit. The results from URANS (unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) simulations with the standard k-$\varepsilon$, k-$\omega$ shear stress transport (SST) and Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence models were analyzed and compared with the noise data from the experiments. The frequency spectra of the far-field acoustic pressure were computed using the Farrasat equation derived from the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings (FW-H) equation based on the acoustic analogy model. Two fixed fan casings and the rotating cross-flow fan were used as the source surfaces of the dipole noise in the Farrasat equation. The result with the standard k-$\epsilon$ model showed a much better agreement with the experimental data compared to the k-w SST and S-A models. The differences in the pressure spectra from the different turbulence models were discussed based on the instantaneous vorticity fields. It was found that the over-estimated power spectra with the k-w SST and S-A models are related to the emphasized small-scale vortices produced with these models.

  • A co-rotational quasi-conforming formulation of four- node stress resultant shell elements using Ivanov-Ilyushin yield criteria are presented for the nonlinear analysis of plate and shell structure. The formulation of the geometrical stiffness is defined by the full definition of the Green strain tensor and it is efficient for analyzing stability problems of moderately thick plates and shells as it incorporates the bending moment and transverse shear resultant force. As a result of the explicit integration of the tangent stiffness matrix, this formulation is computationally very efficient in incremental nonlinear analysis. This formulation also integrates the elasto-plastic material behaviour using Ivanov Ilyushin yield condition with isotropic strain hardening and its asocia ted flow rules. The Ivanov Ilyushin plasticity, which avoids multi-layer integration, is computationally efficient in large-scale modeling of elasto-plastic shell structures. The numerical examples herein illustrate a satisfactory concordance with test ed and published references.

  • Recently, constructions of coastal structure including wind turbine structure have increased at southwest shore of Korea. There is a big difference of tide which rage from 3.0 m to 8.0 m at south and wet shore of Korea, respectively. In such ocean circumstance, large scour may occur due to multi-directional tidal current and transverse stress of the wind. therefore scour surrounding wind turbine structure can make system unsafe due to unexpected system vibration. In this study, hydraulic resistance capacity, i.e., critical velocity and critical shear stress, was evaluated by RCT. Uni-directional and bi-directional hydraulic resistance capacities of the samples which were consolidated by different preconsolidation pressures were correlated with soil resistivities of same samples. According to the correlation, it is possible to estimate hydraulic resistance capacity from electrical resistivity of soil. Through the updating the correlation for various soil types, it is expected that the hydraulic resistance capacity of whole construction site will be simply determined from the electrical resistivity.

  • Unsteady vortex shedding behind a rectangular cylinder near a wall influences both increasing of drag and dynamic stability of heavy vehicle, bridge or building. Incompressible Averaged Navier-Stokes equation with modified ${\varepsilon}-SST$ turbulence model is adapted for investigating the flow field between the rectangular cylinder and the wall. In case the vortex shedding happens, not only the averaged maximum velocity is higher than other cases, but the position of the maximum velocity is closer to the lower surface of rectangular cylinder. On this study, it is confirmed that the vortex shedding behind a rectangular cylinder can be suppressed by the passive control method added by horizontal and vertical fences to the lower surface of rectangular cylinder.

  • This paper studies the aerodynamic performance that the vent mixer-new conceptual supersonic mixer-showed with its geometric characteristics. The hole is 2 mm with 2 mm's distance from the wall in case 1 and with no distance in case 2. In case 3 die hole is 1 mm. Case 1 and case 2 showed the same total pressure recovery ratio, of which the case 3 was lower than that. While cases 1-3 had the same reattachment length, the shear layer was thicker in cases 1 and 2 than in case 3. Within the recirculation zone, cases 1 and 2 had lower pressure loss and higher velocity gradient difference than case 3-they enhance mixing between air and fuel. Separation bubble which is developed by the inflow into the recirculation zone has a significant effect on the total pressure recovery ratio in the combustor. Also separation bubble influences pressure distributions and recirculation flows in the recirculation zone. Therefore, inflow rate of air into the recirculation zone mainly affects the performance of vent mixer.

  • A novel 3D mathematical model for water film runback and icing on a rotating surface is established in this work, where both inertial forces caused by the rotation and shear forces due to the air flow are taken into account. The mathematical model of the water film runback and energy conservation of phase transition process is established, with a cyclical average method applied to simulate the unsteady parameters variation at angles of attack. Ice accretion on a conical spinner surface is simulated and the results are compared with the experimental data to validate the presented model. Then Ice accretion on a cowling surface is numerically investigated. Results show that a higher temperature would correspond to a larger runback ice area and thinner ice layer for glaze ice. Rotation would enhance the icing process, while it would not significantly affect the droplet collection efficiency for an axi-symmetric surface. In the case at angle of attack, the effect of rotation on ice shape is appreciable, ice would present a symmetric shape, while in a stationary case the shape is asymmetric.

  • Problems created by supersonic jet impinging on solid objects or ground arise in a variety of situations. For example multi-stage rocket separation, deep-space docking, V/STOL aircraft, jet-engine exhaust, gas-turbine blade, terrestrial rocket launch, and so on. These impinging jet flows generally contain a complex structures. (mixed subsonic and supersonic regions, interacting shocks and expansion waves, regions of turbulent shear layer) This paper describes experimental works on the phenomena (surface pressure distribution, flow visualization) when underexpanded supersonic jets impinge on the perpendicular, inclined plate using a supersonic cold-(low system. The used supersonic nozzle is convergent-divergent type, exit Mach number 2, The maximum on the plate when it was inclined was much larger than perpendicular plate, owing to high pressure recoveries through multiple shocks. Surface pressure distribution as to underexpanded ratio showed similar patterns together.

  • This paper presents a 1:25 multi-freedom aero-elastic model for a high lighting pole at the Zhoushan stadium. To validate the similarity characteristics of the model, a free vibration test was performed before the formal test. Beat phenomenon was found and eliminated by synthesis of vibration in the X and Y directions, and the damping ratio of the model was identified by the free decay method. The dynamic characteristics of the model were examined and compared with the real structure; the similarity results were favorable. From the test results, the major along-wind dynamic response was the first vibration component. The along-wind wind vibration coefficient was calculated by the China code and Eurocode. When the peak factor equaled 3.5, the coefficient calculated by the China code was close to the experimental result while Eurocode had a slight overestimation of the coefficient. The wind vibration coefficient during typhoon flow was analyzed, and a magnification factor was suggested in typhoon-prone areas. By analyzing the power spectrum of the dynamic cross-wind base shear force, it was found that a second-order vortex-excited resonance existed. The cross-wind response in the test was smaller than Eurocode estimation. The aerodynamic damping ratio was calculated by random decrement technique and the results showed that aerodynamic damping ratios were mostly positive at the design wind speed, which means that the wind-induced galloping phenomenon is predicted not to occur at design wind speeds.
