When vertical shafts are constructed in soft clay with low strength, there is a risk of basal heave, which causes the excavation surface to heave due to the low bearing capacity of the ground against the imbalance of earth pressure at the excavation surface. Methods of deriving a safety factor have been proposed to evaluate the stability against the basal heave. However, there are limitations in that it is difficult to accurately evaluate the heave stability because many assumptions are included in the theoretical derivation. In this study, assuming that a circular vertical shaft is constructed in soft clay, the existing safety factor equation proposed through a theoretical approach was supplemented. Bearing capacity according to the shaft geometry, inhomogeneity of the soil, and the effect of soil plug were considered theoretically and applied in a previous safety factor equation. A three-dimensional numerical analysis was conducted to simulate the occurrence of basal heave and review the supplemented equation through various case studies. Several series of case studies were conducted targeting various factors affecting heave stability. It was verified that the additionally considered characteristics were properly reflected in the supplemented equation. Furthermore, the effects of each factor constituting the safety factor equation were examined using the results of the numerical analysis performed by simulating various cases. It was confirmed that considering the undrained shear strength increment according to depth had the most significant effect on the calculation of the safety factor.

This study evaluates the performance of reinforced concrete columns using hybrid fiber sheets for structural behavior. The purpose of this method is to improve the load-bearing capacity of the reinforced structure by impregnating a hybrid fiber sheet, which is woven by arranging aramid and glass fibers uniaxially and attached to an aged concrete structure requiring reinforcement with epoxy. In particular, not only the weight reduction of the material obtained by using a fiber lighter than the steel material, but also the low-strength, high-toughness fiber element among the fibers used delays the brittle fracture of the high-strength, low-toughness fiber element. The low-strength, high-toughness fiber element among the fibers used delays the brittle fracture of the high-strength, low-toughness fiber element, resulting in weight reduction compared to steel. The study conducted structural tests on four specimens, with the hybrid reinforcement method and failure mode as main variables. Specimen size and loading conditions were chosen to be comparable with previous studies. The structural performance of the specimen was evaluated using energy dissipation capacity and ductility. Analysis shows that excellent results can be obtained with the hybrid fiber sheet reinforcement.

In this study, the design and numerical analysis method of the inclined self-supported wall using cement treated soil were studied. In the case of the inclined self-supported wall, the active earth pressure decreased due to the decrease in the coefficient, Ka according to the slope (angle) and the weight decreasing effect, thereby increasing the overall stability. The wall with the slope caused a change in failure mode from overturning to sliding on the excavation side, and the optimal slope was evaluated to be about 10°. Compared to the strength reduction method, the overall stability in numerical analysis results in conservative results in limit equilibrium analysis, so it was found that this method should be attended when designing. As a result of the parameteric study, the stability on bearing capacity and compression failure did not significantly increase above the slope of 10° when the surcharge was small (about 20kPa or less). In the case of cohesion of the backfill, The results similar to numerical analysis were found to consider cohesion. It was evaluated that stability on sliding, oveturning, shear, and tension failure increases in proportion to the thickness of the wall, but there is no significant change in the stability on the bearing capacity and compressive failure regardless of the thickness of the wall above a certain angle (about 10°).

In Korea, more than 60% of the population lives in apartment buildings with wall structures that exhibit brittle behavior during earthquakes. Therefore, in recent performance-based seismic design, the selection of the energy dissipation coefficient for reinforced concrete (RC) walls in nonlinear dynamic analysis is very important. Previous experimental studies have reported that the main factors affecting the energy dissipation capacity of RC walls are the axial force ratio, the spacing of transverse reinforcement of boundary element, and the aspect ratio. The Architectural Institute of Korea and the Korea Concrete Institute proposed a concentrated plastic hinge model and the energy dissipation coefficient for each RC member in the guideline 「Nonlinear Analysis Model for Performance-Based Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Building Structures, 2021.」 The proposed equation for the energy dissipation coefficient does not include the factors of axial force ratio and spacing of transverse reinforcement of boundary element. The aspect ratio is applied to the flexural plastic model, despite considering shear-dominated behavior. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the effect of the aspect ratio according to the analysis model. In this study, the influence of each factor on the energy dissipation coefficient was analyzed by comparing the results of existing experimental research, nonlinear analysis using the fiber element model of a nonlinear analysis program(Perform 3D), and the energy dissipation coefficient proposed in the guideline. As the axial force ratio increased, the energy dissipation coefficient decreased, and as the spacing of transverse reinforcement of boundary element decreased, the energy dissipation coefficient increased. Additionally, as the aspect ratio increased, the energy dissipation coefficient tended to increase, with the aspect ratio showing the greatest influence.
In most developing countries consumers purchase retail cuts from hot carcasses and prepare traditional meat products as per their convenience and requirements. In this study, effects of different post mortem handling practices on quality of meat curry from culled sheep meat have been studied. After slaughter, leg cuts were subjected to nine commonly prevalent handling conditions in India viz. deboning (boning out) and cooking within 2-3 h (1), deboning immediately and cooking after 5-6 h (2), deboning after 5-6 h and cooking (3), deboning immediately, storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 24 h and cooking (4), chilling for 24 h at $4^{\circ}C$, deboning and cooking (5), deboning after 5-6 h, storage for 24 h at $4^{\circ}C$, and cooking (6), deboning after 5-6 h, storage for 48 h at 4??C and cooking (7), deboning after 5-6 h, freezing and cooking (8), deboning after 5-6 h, storage for 24 h at $4^{\circ}C$, freezing and cooking (9). Significant differences were observed in pH, water-holding capacity, cooking loss and shear force values. Sensory scores were significantly higher in conditions (1), (5) and (9), and significantly lower in conditions (4) and (6). From the results, it was concluded that, to have the best quality product, meat should be cooked either immediately after slaughter or should be deboned just before cooking. Storage of deboned meat at refrigerated temperature must be avoided.
The failure of reinforced concrete structures in recent earthquakes caused concern about the performance of beam column joints. Confinement of joint is one of the ways to improve the performance of beam column joints during earthquakes. This paper describes an experimental study of exterior beam-column joints with two non-conventional reinforcement arrangements. One exterior beam-column joint of a six story building in seismic zone III of India was designed for earthquake loading. The transverse reinforcement of the joint assemblages were detailed as per IS 13920:1993 and IS 456:2000 respectively. The proposed nonconventional reinforcement was provided in the form of diagonal reinforcement on the faces of the joint, as a replacement of stirrups in the joint region for joints detailed as per IS 13920 and as additional reinforcement for joints detailed as per IS 456. These newly proposed detailing have the basic advantage of reducing the reinforcement congestion at the joint region. In order to study and compare the performance of joint with different detailing, four types of one-third scale specimens were cast (two numbers in each type). The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed reinforcement detailing. All the specimens were tested under reverse cyclic loading, with appropriate axial load. From the test results, it was found that the beam-column joint having confining reinforcement as per IS: 456 with nonconventional detailing performed well. Test results indicate that the non-conventionally detailed specimens, Type 2 and Type 4 have an improvement in average ductility of 16% and 119% than their conventionally detailed counter parts (Type1 and Type 3). Further, the joint shear capacity of the Type 2 and Type 4 specimens are improved by 8.4% and 15.6% than the corresponding specimens of Type 1 and Type 3 respectively. The present study proposes a closed form expression to compute the yield and ultimate load of the system. This is accomplished using the theory of statics and the failure pattern observed during testing. Good correlation is found between the theoretical and experimental results.

The carcass traits and meat quality of Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) whose diets were supplemented with direct-fed microbial (DFM) and pine cone extract (PCE) were evaluated. Twenty head of Hanwoo steers were divided equally into four groups and for a period of 6 months were given different diets: One group was fed a basal diet as control (CON), the other three groups were fed a basal diet supplemented with DFM-1%, DFM+PCE-1% and DFM+PEC-3%, respectively. DFM+PCE3% diet resulted the lowest carcass quality grade. The loins of DFM-1% contained higher moisture and lower fat than did the loins from the CON group. The crude protein content of DFM+PCE-3% group was significantly higher than that of the other groups. The water holding capacity and Warner-Bratzler shear force of the DFM+PCE-1% and 3% groups were lower than those of the CON and DFM-1% groups. The DFM-1% and 3% groups contained lower saturated fatty acid, higher unsaturated fatty acid, mono-unsaturated fatty acid, and poly-unsaturated fatty acid than did CON and DFM+PCE 1% group. Moreover, the n6:n3 ratios of DFM-1% and DFM+PCE-1% and 3% groups were slightly lower than that of the CON group. Thus we concluded that DFM and PCE supplementation resulted healthier Hanwoo beef with lower fat content and n6:n3 ratio.
There are many large-scale coastal region landfill and land development by loading to use territory efficiently, this regions are mostly soft clay ground. Constructing structures and road on the soft ground bring about engineering problems like ground shear fracture and a big amount of consolidation by bearing capacity. Improvement of soft soil is required to secure soil strength and settlement control. In improvement of soft soil, predict for the amount of settlement based on field surveyed reports are important element for estimating pre-loading banking height and the final point of consolidation. In this study, there is calculating theoretical settlement by analyzing field surveyed report and ground investigation to improvement of soft soil with pre-loading and vertical drain method. And present settlement prediction method reflect soil characteristics in Gimpo Hangang site by analysing prediction settlement and observational settlement during compaction using hyperbolic, ${\sqrt{s}}$, Asaoka method.

Sediment load deposited in sewers and manholes reduces not only the capacity of pipes but also the efficiency of the whole sewer system. This causes the inundations of the low places and overflows at manholes, Moreover, sulfides and bad odor can occur due to deposited sediment with organic loads in manholes. Movements of sediment load in manholes are complicated depending on manhole size, location, inside structure, sediment load type, and time. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the movements of sediment load in manholes by experiments. In this study, experiments were implemented by a square manhole with straight path to measure deposited sedimentation quantity. The experimental apparatus was consisted of a high water tank, an upstream tank, test pipes, a sediment supplier, a manhole, and a downstream tank to measure the experimental discharge. The quantity of deposited sediment load was measured by different conditions, such as the inflow condition of sediment(continuous and certain period), the amount of inflow sediment, discharge, and the type of sediment. Jumoonjin sand(S=2.63, D50=0.55mm), general sand(GS, S=2.65, D50=1.83mm) and anthracite (S=1.45, D50=0.80mm) were employed for the experiment. The velocities in inflow pipe were 0.45 m/s, 0.67 m/s, and 0.9 m/s. Sediment load movement and sedimentation quantity in manhole were influenced by many factors such as velocity, shear stress, viscosity, amount of sediment, sediment size, and specific gravity. Suggested regression equations can estimated the quantity of deposited sediment in the straight path square manholes. The connoted equations that were evaluated through the experimental study have velocity range from 0.45 to 0.9m/sec. The study results illustrates that appropriation of design velocity ragne between 1.0 and 2.0m/sec could implement to maintain and manage manholes.

The objective of this work is to study the flexural strengthening effectiveness of Carbon Fiber Mesh (CFM) in reinforced concrete beams. Flexural strengthening for a simply supported reinforced concrete (RC) beam using CFM is developed by bonding CFM to the soffit of the beam. In this experimental program, five medium-sized reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFM are tested in bending to evaluate reinforcing effects of the CFM. The beams are designed to have high shear capacity so that expected dominant failure mode of specimens is bending. The reinforcing effect of CFM is small at crack initiation, but is considerable in flexural rigidity of the beam after crack initiation. In comparing the behaviors of strengthened and virgin beams each other, it is shown that the strength of RC beams can be enhanced by attaching CFM. A fairly good agreement between the measured values and the calculated ones is obtained at both the cracking strength and yield strength of the strengthened beams.
