This paper describes the micro cutting of wear resistant tungsten carbides using PCD (Poly-Crystalline Diamond) cutting tools in performance with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) direct observation method. Turning experiments were also carried out on this alloy (V50) using a PCD cutting tool. One of the purposes of this study is to describe clearly the cutting mechanism of tungsten carbides and the behavior of WC particles in the deformation zone in orthogonal micro cutting. Other purposes are to achieve a systematic understanding of machining characteristics and the effects of machining parameters on cutting force, machined surface and tool wear rates by the outer turning of this alloy carried out using the PCD cutting tool during these various cutting conditions. A summary of the results are as follows: (1) From the SEM direct observation in cutting the tungsten carbide, WC particles are broken and come into contact with the tool edge directly. This causes tool wear in which portions scrape the tool in a strong manner. (2) There are two chip formation types. One is where the shear angle is comparatively small and the crack of the shear plane becomes wide. The other is a type where the shear angle is above 45 degrees and the crack of the shear plane does not widen. These differences are caused by the stress condition which gives rise to the friction at the shear plane. (3) The thrust cutting forces tend to increase more rapidly than the principal forces, as the depth of cut and the cutting speed are increased preferably in the orthogonal micro cutting. (4) The tool wear on the flank face was larger than that on the rake face in the orthogonal micro cutting. (5) Three components of cutting force in the conventional turning experiments were different in balance from ordinary cutting such as the cutting of steel or cast iron. Those expressed a large value of thrust force, principal force, and feed force. (6) From the viewpoint of high efficient cutting found within this research, a proper cutting speed was 15 m/min and a proper feed rate was 0.1 mm/rev. In this case, it was found that the tool life of a PCD tool was limited to a distance of approximately 230 m. (7) When the depth of cut was 0.1 mm, there was no influence of the feed rate on the feed force. The feed force tended to decrease, as the cutting distance was long, because the tool was worn and the tool edge retreated. (8) The main tool wear of a PCD tool in this research was due to the flank wear within the maximum value of $V_{max}$ being about 260 $\mu\textrm{m}$.
The precast pannels are used as formwork in Half-depth precast deck systems. Therefore, it has many advantages, including safe and convenient construction and reduced construction period compared to cast-in-place construction method. In half-depth precast deck systems, the bonding of precast pannels to cast-in place concrete is very important. To enhance the performance of half-depth precast deck system, it is necessary to improve the composite efficiency of the interface or increase the stiffness of the precast pannel to reduce deformation or stress on the interface. In this study, a flexural test of half-depth precast deck system was performed, in which the shear connecting reinforcement was applied to increase the bonding performance at the interface, and the rib shape precast panels were applied to improve stiffness. In addition, the safety and serviceability of these systems were evaluated. Test results show that all of specimens have the required flexural strength under the ultimate strength limit design. It was also evaluated to have sufficient safety for the serviceability of deflection and crack under the serviceability limit design.

The joint parts was composed of inner AL(aluminum) ring, FRP wedge and motor case which was manufactured by filament wound method. Where the motor case consists of helical and hoop layer. The finite element analysis was performed for the design variable of joint parts to improve the performance of motor case. Where the adhesive layer was modeled to elasto-perfect plastic material and the contact condition of AL ring and wedge was modeled by using the contact surface element of ABAQUS. And the sliding distance of AL ring and the hoop strain of composite case were compared to hydro-static test results to verify the accuracy of analysis results. When wedge and AL ring was perfect bonding, though the hoop strain of joint part was reduced, the maximum shear stress was occurred at the adhesive layer. Thus the adhesive layer had failed due to the high shear stress before the failure was occurred at the case. And as another design method, when wedge and AL ring was contact condition, the shear stress on adhesive layer was decreased. But the hoop stress of joint part increased due to the sliding behavior of AL ring. Finally, the fail was occurred at the composite case of joint part. The improved joint method reinforced by hoop layer to the joint parts under contact condition for wedge and Al. ring reduced the joint part's hoop strain by constraint the sliding behavior of AL ring.
Preloading of soft clays is a common ground stabilization method for improvement of compressibility and the undrained shear strength. The waiting period under preload is a primary design criterion controlling the degree of improvement obtained. Upon unloading the overconsolidation attained with respect to actual loads defines the long term performance. This paper presents a laboratory study for investigation of creep behavior of Famagusta Bay alluvial soft soil preloaded under various effective stresses for analysis of long term performance based on the degree of overconsolidation. Traditional one-dimensional consolidation tests as well as modified creep tests are performed on reconstituted soft specimens. Compressibility parameters are precisely backcalculated using one dimensional consolidation theory and the coefficient of creep is determined using the traditional Cassagrande method as well as two modified methods based on log cycles of time and the inflection of the creep curve. The test results indicated that the long term creep can be successfully predicted considering the proposed method. The creep coefficients derived as part of this method can also be related to the recompression index (recompression index, swelling index) considering the results of the testing method adopted in this study.
The buckling-restrained braced frames with eccentric configurations (BRBFECs) are stable cyclic behavior and high energy absorption capacity. Furthermore, they have an architectural advantage for creating openings like eccentrically braced frames (EBFs). In the present study, it has been suggested to use the performance-based plastic design (PBPD) method to calculate the design base shear of the BRBFEC systems. Moreover, in this study, to reduce the required steel material, it has been suggested to use the performance-based practical design (PBPD) method instead of the force-based design (FBD) method for the design of this system. The 3-, 6-, and 9-story buildings with the BRBFEC system were designed, and the finite element models were modeled. The seismic performance of the models was investigated using two suits of ground motions representing the maximum considered earthquake (MCE) and design basis earthquake (DBE) seismic hazard levels. The results showed that the models designed with the suggested method, which had lower weights compared to those designed with the FBD method, had a desirable seismic performance in terms of maximum story drift and ductility demand under earthquakes at both MCE and DBE seismic hazard levels. This suggests that the steel weights of the structures designed with the PBPD method are about 13% to 18% lesser than the FBD method. However, the residual drifts in these models were higher than those in the models designed with the FBD method. Also, in earthquakes at the DBE hazard level, the residual drifts in all models except the PBPD-6s and PBPD-9s models were less than the allowable reparability limit.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of Staggered Truss Frame(STF) system while changing a shape of truss. The model of this project is a office building of ten floors with Pratt, Howe, Warren, K and Vierendeel truss system applied on each model. Next step is to select the section of elements which satisfy the highest demand capacity ratio by structure design considering gravity load, earthquake load and wind load and then calculate natural period, base shear and story drifts. On the basis of these values, Capacity Spectrum Method(CSM) shows the plastic behavior of STF system such as performance point of Design Earthquake(DE) and Maximum Considered Earthquake(MCE), yield state, plastic hinge etc. to be compared with other truss systems. As a result, Vierendeel STF system especially was found to have the highest strength and stiffness to the corresponding earthquake and all the models for each truss shape fulfilled the target performance level.
In this paper, it is aimed to determine the finite element model updating effects on the structural behavior of long span concrete highway bridges. Birecik Highway Bridge located on the 81stkm of Sanliurfa-Gaziantep state highway over Firat River in Turkey is selected as a case study. The bridge consist of fourteen spans, each of span has a nearly 26m. The total bridge length is 380m and width of bridge is 10m. Firstly, the analytical dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are attained from finite element analyses using SAP2000 program. After, experimental dynamic characteristics are specified from field investigations using Operational Modal Analysis method. Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition method in the frequency domain is used to extract the dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Analytically and experimentally identified dynamic characteristics are compared with each other and finite element model of the bridge is updated to reduce the differences by changing of some uncertain parameters such as section properties, damages, boundary conditions and material properties. At the end of the study, structural performance of the highway bridge is determined under dead load, live load, and dynamic loads before and after model updating to specify the updating effect. Displacements, internal forces and stresses are used as comparison parameters. From the study, it is seen that the ambient vibration measurements are enough to identify the most significant modes of long span highway bridges. Maximum differences between the natural frequencies are reduced averagely from %46.7 to %2.39 by model updating. A good harmony is found between mode shapes after finite element model updating. It is demonstrated that finite element model updating has an important effect on the structural performance of the arch type long span highway bridge. Maximum displacements, shear forces, bending moments and compressive stresses are reduced %28.6, %21.0, %19.22, and %33.3-20.0, respectively.
Properties of AFS vary with the changes in the face-sheet materials. Hence, the performance of AFS can be optimized by selecting face-sheet materials. In this work, three types of face-sheet materials representing elastic-perfectly plastic, elastic-plastic strain hardening and purely elastic materials were employed to study their effects on the flexural behavior and failure mechanism of AFS systematically. Result showed face-sheet materials affected the failure mechanism and energy absorption ability of AFS significantly. When the foam cores were sandwiched by aluminum alloy 6061, the AFS failed by face-sheet yielding and crack without collapse of the foam core, there was no clear plastic platform in the Load-Displacement curve. When the foam cores were sandwiched by stainless steel 304 and carbon fiber fabric, there were no face-sheet crack and the sandwich structure failed by core shear and collapse, plastic platform appeared. Energy absorption abilities of steel and carbon fiber reinforced AFS were much higher than aluminum alloy reinforced one. Carbon fiber was suggested as the best choice for AFS for its light weight and high performance. The versus strength ratio of face sheet to core was suggested to be a significant value for AFS structure design which may determine the failure mechanism of a certain AFS structure.

The purpose of this study is to develop a precast concrete structural wall system that can assure reliable seismic performance. In previous studies, the connections of precast concrete structural walls have had some problems in their seismic performance. Therefore, this research proposes precast concrete structural walls which have an improved seismic performance. One is a hybrid precast concrete structural wall that is composed of a reinforced concrete component and a precast concrete component, and another is a precast concrete wall whose reinforcements have a partially reduced section and are partially unbonded from the surrounding concrete. To evaluate the seismic performance of the proposed precast concrete structural walls, the behavior of three specimens, including a reinforced concrete wall, were subjected to reversed cyclic combined flexure and shear. According to the test results, the proposed precast concrete structural walls have reliable seismic performance.
One of commonly physical phenomena encountered in pump sump systems in which its significant influence to the hydraulic performance of pump system plays an important role in the field of fluid engineering, is the appearance of free surface and submerged vortices. In this paper, a study of the vortices behavior and their formative mechanism of asymmetry is considered in this paper by using numerical approach. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and k-omega Shear Stress Transport turbulence model used to describe the properties of turbulent flows, in company with VOF multiphase model, are implemented by Fluent code with multi-block structured grid system. In the numerical simulation, the calculated elevation of air-water interface and vortex core contours are used to classify visually surface vortices as well as submerged vortices. It is shown that the free surface vortex is identified by the concavity of liquid region from the free surface and swirling flow at that own plane. To investigate the distinctive behavior of these vortices corresponding to each given flow rate at the same water level, some numerical testing of them are considered here in such a manner that the flow pattern of surface vortex are obtained similarly to the obtained results from experiment. Furthermore, the influence due to the change of grid refinement and the variation of depth of the concavity are also considered in this paper. From that, these influential factors will be implemented to design a good pump sump with higher performance in the future.
