  • A diffractive optical element(DOE) for an optical pickup system is proposed in this thesis. Optimization algorithms are used to synthesise the DOE to meet a detailed specification of the two kind of cost function. The one isso called as apodization which refers to the process of suppressing the secondary maxima and the other is so called as sharpness which refers to the process of reducing the size of primary maxima. The result obtained by simplex optimization method is that the apodization and sharpness are well achieved separately. In apodization, the secondary maxima is reduced up to 39%. And in sharpness, the size of first maxima is reduced to 95.2%.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to upsample a low-resolution depth map to a high-resolution version. While conventional camera sensors produce high-resolution color images, the sizes of the depth maps of range/depth sensors are usually low. In this paper, we consider the utilization of high-frequency components to the conventional depth map interpolation methods such as bilinear, bicubic, and bilateral. The proposed method is composed of the three steps: high-frequency component extraction, high-frequency component application, and interpolation. Two objective evaluation measures such as sharpness degree and blur metric are used to examine the performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly outperforms other conventional methods by a factor of 2 in terms of sharpness degree. As well, a blur metric is reduced by a factor of 14 %.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to evaluate how chemiluminescent lighting($ViziLite^{(R)}$) could increase the sharpness of margin and contrast to normal mucosa in the diagnosis of oral lichen planus(OLP), the most frequent oral premalignant lesion, compared with direct visual inspection under incandescent light. Methods: 41 consecutive patients, diagnosed to have OLP with visual inspection under incandescent light, were further examined with chemiluminescent light. The degrees of margin sharpness and lesion contrast were ranked on a scale from 1 to 3 for all patients under visual inspection and chemiluminescent light. The presence of additional lesion only detected by chemiluminescent light, complication, and discomfort were checked for each patient. After both screening tests, biopsy specimens were harvested from all patients with scalpels and histopathologic assessments were done. Results: All 41 patients were diagnosed to have OLP by both visual inspection and chemiluminescent light examination. This result was definitively diagnosed by histopathology. Degrees of margin sharpness and lesion contrast were increased by chemiluminescent light compared with visual inspection, but only the difference of lesion contrast was statistically significant. In 22.0% of patients, additional lesions were detected and 88.9% of them were diagnosed to have OLP histopathologically. 17.1% of patients noted discomfort and 9.8% of patients showed complications after chemiluminescent test. Conclusion: Chemiluminescent light may not be proper for the screen test of oral cancer or premalignant lesion but showed some possibility for additional diagnostic tool for definitively diagnosed patients in determination of lesion margin and scope.

  • In this study, The mixture of three kinds of pre-treatment agents, Carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt(CMC), Sodium alginate and Dextrin, have been prepared for the better coloration of digital textile printing. To get sharpness of outline during digital printing process, the optimal formulation is the CMC and Sodium alginate mixture 1:1 ratio by volume. Cyan, Yellow, and Black colours are excellent on the Sodium alginate mixtures. But, Magenta is excellent in the CMC and Dextrin mixture. Sharpness and printability are closely related to viscosity of the mixture. The most optimal sharpness of outline achieved with a consideration of coloring, and field operations account for production when the viscosity of the mixed pre-treatment agent approximately is 10~13 cSt. Change in shade and staining of wash fastness for all the treated samples with the mixtures rated 4-5 grade. Both dry rubbing fastness to shade change and staining are good in the treated samples, whereas wet rubbing fastness rated 2-3 grade. To improve wet rubbing fastness, the Sodium alginate and Dextrine mixture, which rated 3-4 grade for Black color, is applicable. With exception of 3 rating to black color, Light fastness is 4 rating for the remaining three colors in the regardless of treatment condition and mixing of the pre-treatment agent. Dry cleaning fastness of all samples are also 4-5 rating.

  • Volatile compounds in Cheddar, Emmentaler, Parmesan and Roquefort cheese and cheese aroma were concentrated using a microsteam distillation-extraction apparatus and those compounds were analyzed with GC. The lipase-treated cheese aroma concentrates showed significantly higher level of short-chain free fatty acids than natural ripened cheese. The sensory properties of rancidity was high in Emmemtaler and Parmesan. Acidity and fruitness were shown high score in Roquefort. Correlation of free fatty acids and cheese flavor 'sharpness, rancidity and soapy' appear to be related(r=0.8239, 0.8918 and 0.7503), respectively. Methyl ketones, the most striking flavor components of Roquefort cheese showed high amounts in the series 2-heptanone > 2-nonanone > 2-pentanone > 2-undecanone. And the intensity of the Roquefort taste sensation 'acidity and fruitness' is linearly correlated with the methyl ketone concentrations(r=0.9284, r=0.9659).

  • In this paper, an algorithm that can define the threshold value automatically proposed in order to detect a brain ventricle in MRI brain images. After the wavelet transform, edge sharpness, which means the average magnitude of detail signals on the contour of the object, was computed by using the magnitude of horizontal and vertical detail signals. The contours of a brain ventricle were detected by increasing the threshold value repeatedly and computing edge sharpness. When the edge sharpness became maximal, the optimal threshold was determined, and the detection of a brain ventricle was accomplished finally. In this paper, we compared the proposed algorithm with the geodesic active contour model numerically and verified the efficiency of the proposed algorithm by applying real MRI brain images.

  • Purpose: This study examined the efficiency and wear of periodontal instrument sharpening using aluminum oxide stones with different levels of roughness. Materials and Methods: Thirty new No. 9-10 Gracey curets were used in this study. All curets had become dull after scaling and root planing. After similar blunting, the instruments were divided randomly into three groups (240, 600, 800 grit) containing 10 curets each. The stones were applied correctly to the lateral surface of each curet to maintain the $70-80^{\circ}$ angle. After resharpening, sharpness of the curets was examined by an optical microscope. After 20, 40, 60, and 80 strokes, the wear was measured at 1 mm and 2 mm from the tip of the cutting edge using a digital caliper. The data was analyzed statistically using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures, 2-way ANOVA, and a Fisher's exact test. Results: The degree of sharpness increased significantly (P < 0.001) as the number of sharpening strokes grew for all stones. A comparison of the degree of sharpness on the same number of strokes showed that the 240 grit group significantly excelled the other groups on 5 and 10 strokes, respectively (P < 0.001). The mean wear showed no statistically significant difference among the groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The efficiency of Gracey curet resharpening was enhanced with more coarse stones, though we should consider the wear of the instrument during resharpening.

  • Most of past image processing systems have been designed independent of image contents. Now, evolving computation power is making the "image-dependent" elegant algorithms possible to get the better image renditions on display. This paper introduces our recent approaches to quality and pleasant imaging based on image-dependent. Three typical approaches to comfortable "Sharpness", "Lightness", and "Color" renditions on display image arc presented.
