Since digital images and videos are rapidly increasing in the internet with the spread of mobile computers and smartphones, research on image retrieval has gained tremendous momentum. Color, shape, and texture are major features used in image retrieval. Especially, color information has been widely used in image retrieval, because it is robust in translation, rotation, and a small change of camera view. This paper proposes a new method for histogram refinement based on local color difference. Firstly, the proposed method converts a RGB color image into a HSV color image. Secondly, it reduces the size of color space from 2563 to 32. It classifies pixels in the 32-color image into three groups according to the color difference between a central pixel and its neighbors in a 3x3 local region. Finally, it makes a color difference vector(CDV) representing three refined color histograms, then image retrieval is performed by the CDV matching. The experimental results using public image database show that the proposed method has higher retrieval accuracy than other conventional ones. They also show that the proposed method can be effectively applied to search low resolution images such as thumbnail images.
This paper presents an adaptive image interpolation method using a pixel-based neighbor embedding which is modified from the patch-based neighbor embedding of contemporary super resolution algorithms. Conventional interpolation methods for high resolution detect at least 16-directional edges in order to remove zig-zaging effects and selectively choose the interpolation strategy according to the direction and value of edge. Thus, they require much computation and high complexity. In order to develop a simple interpolation method preserving edge's directional shape, the proposed algorithm adopts the simplest Haar wavelet and suggests a new pixel-based embedding scheme. First, the low-quality image but high resolution, magnified into 1 octave above, is acquired using an adaptive 8-directional interpolation based on the high frequency coefficients of the wavelet transform. Thereafter, the pixel embedding process updates a high resolution pixel of the magnified image with the weighted sum of the best matched pixel value, which is searched at its low resolution image. As the results, the proposed scheme is simple and removes zig-zaging effects without any additional process.
This paper proposes the method of surface classification and threshold value selection for surface classification of the three-dimensional object recognition. The processings of three-dimensional image processing system consist of three steps, i.e, acquisition of range data, feature extraction and matching process. This paper proposes the method of shape feature extraction from the acquired rage data in the entire three-dimensional image processing system. In order to achieve these goals, firstly, this article proposes the surface classification method by using the distribution characteristics of sign value from range values. Also pre-existing method which uses the K-curvature and K-curvature has limitation in the practical threshold value selection. To overcome this, this article proposes the selection of threshold value for surface classification. Finally, the effectiveness of this article is demonstrated by the several experiments.
The primary wave energy conversion by a three-dimensional bottom-mounted oscillating water column (OWC) wave power device in regular waves has been studied. The linear potential boundary value problem has been solved following the boundary matching method. The optimum shape parameters such as the chamber length and the depth of the front skirt of the OWC chamber obtained through two-dimensional numerical tests in the frequency domain have been applied in the design of the present OWC chamber. Time-mean wave power converted by the OWC device and the time-mean second-order wave forces on the OWC chamber structure have been presented for different wave incidence angles in the frequency-domain. It has been shown that the peak period of $P_m$ for the optimum damping parameter coincides with the peak period of the time.mean wave drift force when ${\gamma}=0$.

A process of 3-D stereo particle image velocimetry(PIV)was developed for the measurement of an illuminated sliced section field of 3-D complex flows. The present method includes modeling of camera by a calibrator based on the homogeneous coordinate system, transformation of the oblique-angled image to the right-angled image, identification of 2-D velocity vectors by 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criteria, and finally 3-D display as the post processing. An experimental system was also used for the application of the proposed method. Two high speed digital CCD cameras and an Argon-Ion Laser for the illumination were adopted to clarify the time-dependent characteristics of the leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing found in modern air-fighters.

When recording single-unit responses from neural systems, a common problem is the accurate detection of spikes (action potentials) in the presence of competing unwanted (noise) signals. While some sources of noise can be readily dealt with through filtering or 'template subtraction' techniques, other sources present a more difficult problem. In particular, noise components introduced by power supplies, which contain harmonics of the power-line frequency, can be particularly troublesome in that they can mimic the shape of the desired spikes. Thus, standard 'template subtraction' techniques or notch-filtering approaches are not appropriate. In this study, we propose the use of a novel template-subtraction scheme that involves estimating the power-line noise waveform and using cross-correlation techniques to subtract them from the recordings. This technique requires two key steps: (1) cross-correlation analysis of each recorded waveform extracts a robust representation of the power-line noise waveform and (2) a second level of cross-correlation to successfully subtract that representation from each recorded waveform. This paper describes this algorithm and provides examples of its implementation using actual recorded waveforms that are contaminated with these noise signals. An improvement (reduction) in the noise level is reported, as are suggestions for future implementation of this strategy.
The accuracy of classifying pixels in HIRIS images is usually degraded by noisy bands since noisy bands may deform the typical shape of spectral reflectance. Proposed in this paper is a statistical method for noisy band removal which mainly makes use of the correlation coefficients between bands. Considering each band as a random variable, the correlation coefficient measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two random variables. While the correlation between two signal bands is high, existence of a noisy band will produce a low correlation due to ill-correlativeness and undirectedness. The application of the correlation coefficient as a measure for detecting noisy bands is under a two-pass screening scheme. This method is independent of the prior knowledge of the sensor or the cause resulted in the noise. The classification in this experiment uses the unsupervised k-nearest neighbor algorithm in accordance with the well-accepted Euclidean distance measure and the spectral angle mapper measure. This paper also proposes a hierarchical combination of these measures for spectral matching. Finally, a separability assessment based on the between-class and within-class scatter matrices is followed to evaluate the performance.

This paper presents a novel approach to control the augmented reality (AR) objects robustly in a marker-less AR system by fingertip tracking and hand pattern recognition. It is known that one of the promising ways to develop a marker-less AR system is using human's body such as hand or face for replacing traditional fiducial markers. This paper introduces a real-time method to manipulate the overlaid virtual objects dynamically in a marker-less AR system using both hands with a single camera. The left bare hand is considered as a virtual marker in the marker-less AR system and the right hand is used as a hand mouse. To build the marker-less system, we utilize a skin-color model for hand shape detection and curvature-based fingertip detection from an input video image. Using the detected fingertips the camera pose are estimated to overlay virtual objects on the hand coordinate system. In order to manipulate the virtual objects rendered on the marker-less AR system dynamically, a vision-based hand control interface, which exploits the fingertip tracking for the movement of the objects and pattern matching for the hand command initiation, is developed. From the experiments, we can prove that the proposed and developed system can control the objects dynamically in a convenient fashion.

An UHF RFID tag is designed and fabricated using the national code in a bar-code with conductive ink. The bar-code sample was taken from a general bar-code from a general box. The conductivity of the conductive ink was measured, and the measured conductivity was used for the simulation tool to design the printed bar-code shape tag antenna. The tag antenna was fabricated using T-matching to reduce the size of the tag, and the bar-code tag antenna is recognized by both a general bar-code reader and an UHF RFID reader. The input reflection coefficient characteristic, the reading range pattern and the reading rate of the tag antenna are measured.
In this study, an ultrasonic transducer was designed with a commercial finite element analysis (FEA) code, PZFlex, and fabricated based on the design. The transducer has the dimension and shape suitable for abdomen diagnosis working at 5 ㎒ and consists of 128 piezoelectric elements disposed in a convex linear array form. The transducer is composed of two impedance matching layers, one backing layer, and kerfs placed between the piezoelectric elements. Validity of the design with the FEA was illustrated through experimental characterization of a sample transducer. Comparison with the design results by equivalent circuit analysis method was also made to check the superiority of the FEA design.
