  • Extraction and representation of postures and/or gestures from human activities in videos have been a focus of research in this area of action recognition. With various applications cropping up from different fields, this paper seeks to improve the performance of these action recognition machines by proposing a shape-based silhouette-edge descriptor for the human body. Information entropy, a method to measure the randomness of a sequence of symbols, is used to aid the selection of vital key postures from video frames. Morphological operations are applied to extract and stack edges to uniquely represent different actions shape-wise. To classify an action from a new input video, a Hausdorff distance measure is applied between the gallery representations and the query images formed from the proposed procedure. The method is tested on known public databases for its validation. An effective method of human action annotation and description has been effectively achieved.

  • Human action recognition is an active research area in computer vision. In this paper, we present a robust method for human action recognition by using combined information of human body shape and motion information with multiple views image sequence. The principal component analysis is used to extract the shape feature of human body and multiple block motion of the human body is used to extract the motion features of human. This combined information with multiple view sequences enhances the recognition of human action. We represent each action using a set of hidden Markov model and we model each action by multiple views. This characterizes the human action recognition from arbitrary view information. Several daily actions of elderly persons are modeled and tested by using this approach and they are correctly classified, which indicate the robustness of our method.

  • Recently, Korean's 3-D foot data have been extensively collected through 5th national anthropometric survey known as 'Size Korea'. In this study, Korean foot shape was investigated and subsequently classified, based on the existing standard for foot shaping. This study analyzed and categorized Korean foot shapes through the following methods. Although the data used in this study were limited to those of Korean adults, major factors affecting the foot shape were deduced and then categorically grouped by the multivariate statistical analysis. For those whose age ranged from 14 to 70, major factors affecting the foot shape for the male were related to foot breadth, ankle thickness, 1st toe shape, malleolus height, heel to top of the foot length, the ratio between toe-side and heel-side and 5th toe shape. For the female, the ball of foot height was added to the above factors. From the factors extracted, the Korean foot shape was categorized into three groups for the male and four groups for the female. They were the ladder type, the inverted triangle type and the square type. For the female, the triangular type was added to the three types. These findings will serve as useful information for the footwear production industry in Korea.

  • Shaped Sound Focusing is defined as the generation of acoustically bright shape in space using multiple sources. The acoustically bright shape is a spatially focused region with relatively high acoustic potential energy level. In view of the energy transfer, acoustical focusing is essential because acoustic energy is very small to use other type of energy. Practically, focused sound shape control not a point is meaningful because there are so many needs to enlarge the focal region especially in clinical uses and others. If focused sound shape can be controlled, it offers various kinds of solutions for clinical uses and others because a regional focusing is essentially needed to reduce a treatment time and enhance the performance of transducers. For making the shaped-sound field, control variables, such as a number of sources, excitation frequency, source positioning, etc., should be taken according to geometrical sound shape. To verify these relations between them, wavenumber domain matching method is suggested because wavenumber spectrum can provide the information of control variables of sources. In this paper, the procedures of shaped sound focusing using wavenumber domain matching and relations between control variables and geometrical sound shape are covered in case of an acoustical ring.

  • In this study, a shape decomposition method using morphological operations is studied for decomposing the complex shape in 2-D image into its simple primitive elements. The serious drawback of conventional shape representation algorithm is that primitive elements are extracted too much to represent and to describe the shape. To solve these problems, a new shape decomposition algorithm using primitive elements that are similar to the geometrical characteristics of shape and 4 scan modes is proposed in this study. The multiple primitive elements as circle, square, and rhombus are extracted by using multiscan modes in a new algorithm. This algorithm have the characteristics that description error and number of primitive elements is reduced. Then, description efficiency is improved. The procedures is also simple and the processing time is reduced.

  • A new method of optimal blank shape design using the initial nodal velocity (INOV) has been proposed for the drawings of arbitrary shaped cups. With the given information of tool shape and the final product shape, corresponding initial blank shape has been found from the motion of boundary nodes. Although the sensitivity method, the past work of Hynbo Shim and Kichan Son, has been proved to be excellent method to find optimal blank shapes, the method has a problem that a couple of deformation analysis is required at each design step and it also exhibits an abnormal behaviors in the rigid body rotation prevailing region. In the present method INOV, only a single deformation analysis per each design stage is required. Drawings of practical products as well as oil-pan have been chosen as the examples. At every case the optimal blank shapes have been obtained only after a few times of modification without predetermined deformation path. The deformed shape with predicted optimal blank almost coincides with the target shape at every case. Through the investigation the INOV is found to be very effective in the arbitrary shaped drawing process design.

  • Shape From Focus (SFF) is a passive optical technique to recover 3D structure of an object that utilizes focus information from 2D images of the object taken at different focus levels. Mostly, SFF methods use a single focus measure to compute image focus quality of each pixel in the image sequence. However, it is difficult to recover accurate 3D shape using a single focus measure, as different focus measures perform differently in diverse conditions. In this paper, a nonlinear Total Variation (TV) based approach is proposed for 3D shape recovery. To improve the result of surface reconstruction, several initial depth maps are obtained using different focus measures and the resultant 3D shape is obtained by diffusing them through TV. The proposed method is tested and evaluated by using image sequences of synthetic and real objects. The results and comparative analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

  • The main objective of this paper is to provide a methodology of feature extraction using shape of image objects for content-based image retrieval. The shape of most real-life objects is irregular, and hence there is no universal approach to quantify the shape of an arbitrary object. In particular. electronic catalogs contain many image objects for their products. In this paper, we perform feature extraction based on individual objects in images rather than on the whole image itself, since our method uses a shape-based approach of objects using RLC lines within an image. Experiments show that shape parameters distinctly represented image objects and provided better classification and discrimination among image objects in an image database compared to Texture.
