  • This paper presents a method for tessellating trimmed NURBS surface with preserving sharp shape Although several existing approaches need a large number of triangular meshes to represent sharp shape of surface, resulting triangular meshes may not reflect sharp edges properly. In this study, we flit detect the sharp shape of NURBS surface automatically using C1 continuous condition and then use constraint Delaunay triangulation method to present exact sharp shape with the minimum triangular meshes. And we also use approximated developed surface domain as triangulation domain of rimmed NURBS surface. In this way, the shape of triangular elements on the triangular domains is approximately preserved and can avoid distortion when mapped into three-dimensional space. finally, we show examples that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in terms of reducing the number of triangular meshes and preserving sharp shape of surface more exactly.

  • The distortion effect of electrical response for two-dimensional (2-D) DC resistivity method was verified in terms of 2-D inversion result of synthetic data obtained by three-dimensional (3-D) modeling, which is frequently applied to assess the safety of center core-type fill dam structure. The distortion effect is due to 2-D interpretation for 3-D structure. By the modeling analysis, we found that the water level is correctly described in the resistivity section around the middle part rather than each end side of the embankment due to the 3-D terrain effect, when the material of the embankment is assumed as horizontally uniform. And when we set the slope of outer rock fill part as uniform. the sharper the slope of the center core is, the more similar the resistivity section reflects. On the other hand, when the slope of the rock fill is steep, the resistivity section shows the water level at lower position than the real one, and the 3-D distortion effect at the end side of the embankment was enhanced.

  • General lens, widely using in Photogrammetry, has narrow view, and have to adjust "Image-Registration Method" after obtain images and it need cost; economic, period of time. Recent days, there is various study that use wide-angle lens, usually for robotics field, put to practical use in photogrammetry instead of general lens. In this studies, distortion tendency of wide-angle lens and utilize the correction techniques suitable to wide-angle lens by the existing photographic survey methods. After carrying out the calibration of the wide-angle lens, we calculated the correction parameters, and then developed the method that convert the original image-point to new image-point correcting distortion. For authorization the developed algorithm, we had inspection about shape and position; there are approximately 2D RMSE of 3 pixel, cx = 2, and cy = 3 different.

  • This paper presents the auto-extraction method that searches for the Mapping points in the calibration algorithm of the image acquired by the wide angle CCD camera. In this algorithm, we remove the noise from the distorted image and then obtain the edge image. Proposed method extracts the distortion point, comparing the threshold value of the histogram of the horizontal and vertical pixel lines in edge image. This processing step can be directly applied to the original image of the wide angle CCD camera output. Proposed method results are compared with hand-worked result image using the two wide angle CCD cameras having different angles with the difference value of the result images respectively. Experimental results show that proposed method can allocate the distortion-calibration constant of the wide angle CCD camera regardless of lens type, distortion shape and image type.

  • Camera image is very sensitive to illumination that result in difficulties for recognizing character. Also Camera captured document images have not only skew but also vignetting effect and geometric distortion. Vignetting effect make it difficult to separate characters from the document images. Geometric distortion, occurred by the mismatch of angle and center position between the document image and the camera, make the shape of characters to be distorted, so that the character recognition is more difficult than the case of using scanner. In this paper, we propose a method that can increase the performance of character recognition by correcting the geometric distortion of document images using a linear approximation which changes the quadrilateral region to the rectangle one. The proposed method also determine the quadrilateral transform region automatically, using the alignment of character lines and the skewed angles of characters located in the edges of each character line. Proposed method, therefore, can correct the geometric distortion without getting positional information from camera.

  • Purpose: This study proposes a new ball-type phantom for evaluation of the image layer of panoramic radiography. Materials and Methods: The arch shape of an acrylic resin phantom was derived from average data on the lower dental arch in Korean adult males. Metal balls with a 2-mm diameter were placed along the center line of the phantom at a 4-mm mesiodistal interval. Additional metal balls were placed along the 22 arch-shaped lines that ran parallel to the center line at 2-mm buccolingual intervals. The height of each ball in the horizontal plane was spaced by 2.5 mm, and consequently, the balls appeared oblique when viewed from the side. The resulting phantom was named the Panorama phantom. The distortion rate of the balls in the acquired image was measured by automatically calculating the difference between the vertical and horizontal length using $MATLAB^{(R)}$. Image layer boundaries were obtained by applying various distortion rate thresholds. Results: Most areas containing metal balls (91.5%) were included in the image layer with a 50% distortion rate threshold. When a 5% distortion rate threshold was applied, the image layer was formed with a small buccolingual width along the arch-shaped center line. However, it was medially located in the temporomandibular joint region. Conclusion: The Panorama phantom could be used to evaluate the image layer of panoramic radiography, including all mesiodistal areas with large buccolingual width.

  • In dispersion management, which involves additionally inserting a dispersion compensation fiber of an appropriate length to eliminate or reduce the chromatic dispersion of a single-mode fiber, determining the form of the dispersion map, which is the cumulative dispersion profile according to the transmission distance, is the most basic and important. In this paper, the various symmetric dispersion map based on trapezoids applied to dispersion-managed links combined with mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI), which compensates for the distortion caused by Kerr nonlinear effects through optical phase conjugation in the middle of the entire transmission link are proposed, and the effect of each dispersion map on distortion compensation of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signals is analyzed. Although the degree of compensation varies depending on the factors that determine the detailed shape of the proposed trapezoid-shaped dispersion map and RDPS (residual dispersion per span), overall, it was confirmed that distortion compensation for signals with a small extinction ratio was more effective than distortion compensation for WDM channel signals with a large extinction ratio.

  • Local field distribution in the mixed state of type II superconductors has been numerically calculated and compared with $^{11}$B NMR spectra for YNi$_2B_2C$ single crystals. We find that only small distortion of vortex positions from the perfect lattice points is enough to smear out the low frequency shoulder. As the vortices are further distorted, the line shape changes from an asymmetric shape with a high frequency tail to a symmetric Gaussian line shape. It is found that the second moment of the field distribution has a major contribution from the high frequency tail. Consequently, a linewidth of the full width at half maximum calculated from the second moment assuming for a Gaussian line shape is overestimated.

  • Since the quality of the coated wires is in various applications dependant on the coating depth, accuracy of hole size of dies used for coating wires must be maintained precisely, in general within one micron. This paper proposes a new vision system which measures automatically the size and shape of small holes having diameters less than 1mm within an error limit of 1 micron. To quickly obtain the focused image, this paper proposes an estimation method of the camera position using only a couple of defocused hole images. It measures the distributions of light intensity around the image boundary and decides the direction and distance of a camera motion. The proposed system measures the size, shape distortion, inclination of the hole against the axis of the dies structure, to decides the acceptability of the dies for use. The proposed algorithm has been implemented using a cheap 640${\times}$480 image system and has shown an average size error of 1micron when measuring the dieses having 0.1mm to 1.0mm diameters. It can be applied to the inspection of the size and position of holes in PCB, too.

  • The harmonics of synchronous generators increase iron and copper loss, which is the cause of fever. For harmonic reduction, the armature winding method is used as a distribution winding, a short pitch winding. In this paper, we want to improve the waveform of the instrument voltage by reducing the harmonics in a new way to the shape of the permanent magnet. The method cuts both ends of the permanent magnet and adjusts the air gap by increasing and decreasing the area according to the set value. By varying the distribution of magnetic flux density, the resulting electromotive voltage and strain were compared. This compares the shape-changing models of permanent magnets and shows an effective deformation method.
