Genetic Parameters for Growth-Related Traits in Korean Native Chicken

  • Body and carcass weights are always being main focus in poultry industry. The aim of current study was to estimate the heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations of growth-related traits in Korean native chicken. A total of 596 chickens representing five lines of Korean native chicken (Black, Gray-Brown, Red-Brown, White, and Yellow-Brown) were reared under the standard breeding procedures in the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), Korea. Their body weights were observed every two weeks from hatched to 20 weeks of age. In addition, shank length and carcass weight were also measured before and after slaughter, respectively. The ASReml-R program was used to compute genetic parameters. The body weight traits were moderate to high heritability values (ranged 0.29~0.63). The heritablilites of carcass weight ($h^2=0.20$) and shank length ($h^2=0.20$) were categorized as moderate. Moreover, both genetic and phenotypic correlations were ranged form 0.62 to 0.99 and ranged from 0.42 to 0.98, respectively. These findings can be useful information for quantitative genetic studies and breeding plan of Korean native chicken.

Determination and comparison of growth performance parameters between two crossbred strains of Korean native chickens with a white semi broiler chicken for 84 days post-hatch

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the growth performance between two different crossbred strains of Korean native chickens denoted as 1E and 2E with a white semibroiler (LL) from hatch to d-84 post-hatch. A total of 450 one-day-old chicks were randomly distributed into cages which included 15 replicate cages each for 1E and 2E with 9 replicate cages for LL. A three phase feeding program was used as a starter (Day 1 - 35; crude protein [CP] 20.3%; metabolizable energy [ME] 3,059 kcal·kg-1), grower (Day 36 - 56; CP 18.6%; ME 3,123 kcal·kg-1) and finisher (Day 57 - 84; CP 16.7%; ME 3,187 kcal·kg-1). The results revealed that LL had a higher (p < 0.05) BW during d-8 to d-84 compared with the other two cross breed groups. A higher (p < 0.05) ADG was observed from the LL during the entire period except from d-1 to d-14 and d-71 to d-84 when compared with 1E and 2E. Shank length did not vary (p > 0.05) between the strains, despite LL having a SL that was 2.86% higher (p < 0.05) when compared with the other strains from d-15 to d-21 post-hatch, and 1E had a SL that was 2.28% (p < 0.05) higher when compared with the other strains during the first week of the experiment.

Studies on the Estimation of the Genetic Parameters on All Traits in Korean Native Ogol Fowl IV. Estimations of the Heritabilities and Genetic Correlations on the Body Conformations (한국재래오골계의 제형질에 대한 유전모수 추정에 관한 연구 IV. 체형에 대한 유전력 및 유전상알 추정)

  • This study was conducted to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations on body shape components in Korean Native Ogol fowl , The data analysis were record of 450 pullets producted from 150 dams and 20 sires of Korean Native Ogol fowl raised at Chungnam National University from June 18, 1987 to April 6, 1989. The results obtained are sammarized as follows ; 1. On the body components, shank length at 8, 24 weeks and 300 days of age were $8.717\pm$0.363, $9.576\pm$0.390 and $9.646\pm$0.389cm, the breast width were 3.469$\pm$0.234, $4.310\pm$0.345 and $4.752\pm$0.343cm; the breast girth at 8, 24weeks and 300 days of age were $22.819\pm$1.082, $36.719\pm$1.793 and $39.008\pm$1.709cm; the tibia length at 8, 24weeks and 300days of age were $9.941\pm$0.888, $13.183\pm$0.499 and $13.560\pm$0.552cm. 2. The heritability estimates of body shape components based on the variances of sires, dams and combined components from 8, 24 weeks and 300 days of age were 0.235-0.290, 0.589-0.890 and 0.437-0.565 for shank length ; 0.185-0.237, 0.444-0.536 and 0.314-0.392 for breast width ; 0.218-0.552, 0.499-0.746, 0.486-0.558 for breast girth ; 0.339-0.432, 0.281-0.543 and 0.340-0.446 for tibia length, respectively. 3. The genetic correlation coefficient of body shape components were as follows ; between shank length and breast width, breast girth, tibia length were 0.237-0.836, 0.277-0,729 and 0.378-0.915;between breast width and breast girth, tibia length were 0.637-0.889 and 0.384-0.903;between breast girth and tibia length was 0.905-0.995, respectively.

The genetic correlation coefficients of the economic traits and egg components were as follows : between body weight and albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight were 0.083~0.591, 0 110~0.541 and 0.336~0.782 between age at the first egg and albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight were 0.476-0.692, 0.265~0.631 and 0.420~0.519 between number of egg Production and albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight were -0.578~-0.240, -0.255~-0.060, -0.477~-0.313. between egg weight and albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight were 0.825~0.939, 0.382~0.564, 0.374~0.337, respectively. 3. The genetic correlation coefficients of the economic traits and egg qualifies were as follows : between body weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height, Haugh units were 0.215~0.367, 0.248~0.650, 0.161~0.624, 0.157~0.449. between number of egg production and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height, Haugh units were -0.384~-0.207, -0.557~-0.306, -0.555~-0.198, -0.582~-0.074 between egg weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height, Haugh units were 0.276~0.697, 0.290~0.627, 0.238~0.538, -0.207-0.020, respectively. 4. The genetic correlation coefficients of egg compositions and egg qualities were as follows : between albumen weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height and Haugh units were 0.110~0.584, -0.380~-0.002, 0.239~0.887 and -0.195~0.279 : between yolk weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height and Haugh units were -0.204~0.160, 0.294~0.133, -0.049~0.133 and -0.196~-0 136 : between shell weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height and Haugh units were 0.127~0.503, 0.127~0.476, 0.140~0.273 and -0.172~0.233, respectively.

Relationship between body size traits and carcass traits with primal cuts yields in Hanwoo steers

  • Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the correlation between body size traits, carcass traits, and primal cuts in Hanwoo steers. Methods: Sixty-one beef carcasses were classified for conformation and primal cut weight. Additionally, carcass weight, fat thickness, carcass dimensions, and longissimus muscle area were determined to complement the grading. Results: The average live weight and cold carcass weight were 759 and 469 kg, respectively. The mean carcass meat, fat, and bone proportions were 551, 298, and 151 g/kg, respectively. Primal cuts weights showed significant positive correlations (p<0.001) of 0.42 to 0.82 with live weight, carcass weight, and longissimus muscle area and a significant negative correlation with carcass fat (without shank, -0.38 to -0.10). Primal cut weights were positively correlated (p<0.01) with carcass length (0.41 to 0.77), forequarter length (0.33 to 0.57), 6th lumbar vertebrae-heel length (0.33 to 0.59), 7th cervical vertebrae carcass breadth (0.35 to 0.58), 5th to 6th thoracic vertebrae breadth (0.36 to 0.65), 7th to 8th thoracic vertebrae girth (0.38 to 0.63), and coxae girth (0.34 to 0.56) and non-significantly related to cervical vertebrae length and coxae thickness. Conclusion: There was a high correlation among live weight, carcass weight, longissimus muscle area, carcass length, 7th cervical vertebrae carcass breadth, 5th to 6th thoracic vertebrae breadth, and 7th to 8th thoracic vertebrae girth of the primal cuts yield. The correlation between fat and primal cut yields was highly significant and negative. Carcass length and 7th to 8th thoracic vertebrae girth, appear to be the most important traits affecting primal cut yields.

  • The field utilization factor (equation omitted) (the mean electric field / the maximum electric field) of standard sphere gaps was calculated by the charge simulation method, taking into account the ground plane and shanks. n changes mainly with g/r and slightly with 1$_1$, 1$_2$ and 1, where D=2r is the sphere diameter, g is the gap length, 1$_1$ and 1$_2$, respectively, are the lengths of the upper and lower shank, and t is the shank diameter. Generally, (equation omitted) increases as 1$_1$,1$_2$ and t each becomes larger. IEC standard 60052(2002) limits t$\leq$0.2D 1$_1$$\geq$1D and prescribes A=1$_2$+D+g where A is the height of the spark point on the upper sphere. Therefore, (equation omitted) is the largest when A=9D and the smallest when A=3D. The simple equation of a straight line, (equation omitted)=1- (g/3r), can generally be used as a representative value of (equation omitted) for a wide variety of sphere diameters that are permitted by the IEC standard. The maximum electric field E$_{m}$ at sparkover of standard air gaps has also been calculated by the relation E$_{m}$=V/(equation omitted)g). E$_{m}$ describes a U-curve for g/r, up to the sphere diameter of 1 m. Moreover, for 1.5-m and 2-m diameters and especially .for negative polarity, sparkover voltages have been calculated by integration of the ionization index.index.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the hatching and growing performance, and heterosis of Korean Native Chicken(KNC), Rhode Island Red(RIR) and KNC XRIR crossbred. A total of 1,274 female pullets were produced from KNC, RIR and KNC x RIR crossbred kept in National Live-stock Research Institute, Korea. The experiment was conducted for 20 weeks from Sep. 2, 1995 to Jan. 20,1996. Hatchabilities of KNC dark brown strain x RlR(DR), KNC light brown strain x RlR (LR) and KNC dark black strain x RlR(BR) were 77.3%, 73.6% and 72.5%, respectively. Viabilities up to 20 weeks of age were not significantly (P>0.05) different among purebreds and crossbred. Body weights of DR, LR and BR were 1,890 g, 1,849 g and 1,967 g, respectively, at 20 weeks of age. The feed conversion ratio(feed /gain) of DR, LR, and BR were 5.88, 6.07 and 5.87, respectively, up to 20 weeks of age. Average shank lengths of DR, LR and BR were 97.1 mm, 98.9 mm and 99.4 mm, respectively, at 20 weeks of age. The heterosis effects were estimated to be -0. 48%, and 12.58%, respectively, in fertility and hatchability. Up to 20 weeks of age, the heterosis effects were estimated to be 0.07%, 13.49%, -5.77%, and 3.52% in viability, body weight, feed conversion ratio, and shank length, respectively.

Muscle-Induced Accelerations of Body Segments (근육의 힘이 신체 각 부분의 가속도에 미치는 영향)

  • When the functional electrical stimulation is employed to recover mobility to the plegic, it is very important to understand functions of the selected muscles. I have investigated how a muscle acts to accelerate the body segments, since the body segements are connected by joints so that contraction of a muscle not only rotates the segments to which it is attached but also causes other segments to rotate by creation a reaction force at every joint, which is called the inertial coupling. I found that a single-joint muscle always acts to accelerate the spanned joint in the same direction as the joint torque produced by the muscle. However, a double-joint muscle can act to accelerate the spanned joint in the opposite direction to the joint torque produced by the muscle depending on (1) the body position, (2) the body-segmental parameters, and (3) the type of the movement. Investigating the condition number of the inertia matrix of the body-segmental model gave us some insights into how controllable the body-segmental system is for different values of the factors mentioned above. The results suggested that the upright position is the most undesirable position to independently control the three segments(trunk, thigh and shank) and that the controllability is the most sensitive to variation of the shank length and the trunk mass, which implies that accuracy is required particularly when we estimate these two body-segmental parameters before the paralyzed muscles are innervated by using electrical stimulation.

EFFECT OF DIETARY PROTEIN AND ENERGY LEVELS ON GROWTH AND CARCASS YIELD PERFORMANCES OF SPENT STARCROSS HENS

  • The effect of 16 different dietary rations, computed by the combinations of 13, 16, 19 or 22% CP and 2600, 2800, 3000 or 3100 kcal ME/kg, on growth performances and carcass yield of Starcross layers were assessed in two similar experiments. In both experiments, the body weight, eviscerated carcass yield, edible carcass yield, length of digestive tract and shank length increased but the feed intake decreased linearly with the increase of dietary CP and ME levels. The liver and gizzard weights as percentages of live weight tended to be increased with the increase of dietary CP and ME levels. The carcass dry matter, crude protein, fat, ash and energy content were not influenced by the dietary CP and ME levels. Dietary CP levels had positive correlations with all the parameters (except feed and energy intake and carcass dry matter). However, the dietary ME levels were positively correlated with all the parameters (except feed and energy intake; carcass dry matter and ash) in both experiments. The higher values were noted for all the parameters (except gizzard and carcass fat percentages) studied in Experiment 1 compared to those observed in Experiment 2.

  • Verification of tool collision is an important issue in die and mold machining. In this paper three functions of verification are schematically explained based on Z-Map model. The first function is getting a collision-free region when a tool assembly and a part surface model are given. The second function estimates the shortest length of cutter shank with that the tool cuts all of a region without collision. The last one is cutting simulation considering all parts of tool assembly as well as cutter blade. Those functions can be easily implemented by using several basic operators of Z-Map model which are explained also. Proposed approaches have enough accuracy to verify collision in reasonable computing time.
