  • Main focus on balance shaft module is to reduce the vibration triggered from engine block and compensate it from unbalance mass in balance shaft. Since the performance of balance shaft module is controlled by rotor shape including unbalance mass, a design strategy on rotor is key issue on determine the quality of balance shaft system. Even the design result on balance shaft mostly affect the lay-out of housing and other related components, its issue on balance shaft should be considered in advance throughout the total design procedure. In this paper, optimal design strategy focused on balance shaft is presented to make a design process efficiently with ensuring its high performance. And its method is verified with field design process of balance shaft in commonly adapted vehicle with 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder engine.

  • Electromotive forces (EMF) are generated by electrical equipment and engine shafting with a number of reasons. The shaft and bearing which is insulated by lubricating oil acts as a condenser, being able to store this EMFs. The electromotive force on the hull and shaft, with very few exceptions, has anode voltage on it. Electrical spark of the anode voltage on the shaft may lead to corrosion. Hence, in order to prevent ship's shaft and propeller corrosion, shaft grounding system are installed and operated. The shaft EMF voltage measurement methods was measured using 24bit 2 channels A/D converter of NI company and Labview software. 1 channel was propeller shaft's voltage and the other was M/E engine rpm gauge. In this paper, the generated electromotive force was analyzed and modeled with result of the analysis. As a result, the main shaft's electromotive force was in direct proportion to the main engine's revolution. However, over the specific R.P.M., it was reduced gradually. In addition, higher electromotive force on the shaft was identified during engine's ahead direction than the astern direction. The generated electromotive force is only minor compared to the shaft grounding system.

  • This paper analyzes the shaft torsion of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) for a wind farm collector system fault. When a fault occurs, the active power of the DFIG cannot be transmitted to the grid and thus accelerates the rotation of both the blade and the rotor. Due to the different inertia of these, the angle of deviation fluctuates and the shaft torsion is occurred. This becomes much severe when the rotational speed of the blade exceeds a threshold, which activating the pitch control to reduce the mechanical power. The torque, which can be sixty times larger than that in the steady state, may destroy the shaft. The shaft torsion phenomena are simulated using the EMTP-RV simulator. The results indicate that when a wind farm collector system fault occurs, a severe shaft torsion is occurred due to the activation of the pitch control.

  • An analytical method using the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the effect of flexibility of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. Then the coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are extensively investigated using simplistic models, as the shaft rotational speed and the pretwist and stagger angles of blade are varied.

  • This study suggests a new type shaft generating system driven by hydrostatic transmission suitable for small size vessels. In this system, the hydraulic motor speed is controlled by displacement adjustment using a 3-way high speed on/off valve. The 3-way high speed valve is operated by PWM control signal. In this study, a digital robust servo control algorithm is applied to the controller design of the system. By experiments and numerical computations, the frequency variation characteristics of the generating system under various disturbances are investigated. Conclusively, it is said that the shaft generating system proposed in this study shows excellent control performances.

  • In this paper, based on the measured data of hull deflection, an approximated hull deflection curve is drawn using reverse analyzed hull deflection data and the estimation method for flexibility analysis of shaft alignment is proposed by use of the approximate hull deflection curve. Generally an offset value of after stern tube bearing is a datum point with an fore stern tube bearing however the shaft alignment has a tendency which is able to get higher flexibility if the shafting system has the deflection value from after stern tube bearing as reference to bottom direction according to results of on this study. By applying this result of study, the shaft alignment for next similar ships will be able to estimate how to follow the hull deflection and how to be influenced by hull deflection at shaft alignment analysis state using the approximated hull deflection curve.

  • The main goal of this paper is to establish an interference tolerance for determining optimal amount of clearance in the shaft-bearing system supported by radial ball bearings. The 2-D frictional contact model was employed for the FE analysis between the shaft and the inner raceway. Several examples were simulated using different material properties for the solid shaft. Efforts were focused on the deformation applied in the radial direction to select suitable bearings. The analysis results showed that the initial axial preload applied on the bearings plays a significant role to reduce bearing fatigue life. The proposed design parameters obtained by numerical simulations can approximately predict a rate of bearing life reduction as a function of shaft diameter ratio. This analysis can also be used to calculate the optimal initial radial clearance in order to obtain a shaft-bearing system design for high accuracy and long life.

  • The shaft system of turbine is composed of rotating shaft, blades, bearings which support the shaft, packing seal which prevent the leakage of steam, and couplings which connect the shaft. Shaft system component failure, incorrect assemblage or deflection by unexpected forces causes vibration problem. And every turbine has its own characteristics in dynamic response. In this paper we propose the three-bearing supported type rotor which is real equipment and being operated this time as commercial operation. From 1996 it has a high vibration problem and there are many kinds of trial to solve this problem. In resent outage we performed a special diagnosis and carried out appropriate work. We would like to introduce and explain about this case history.

  • In this paper, a development of shaft power measuring system for a rotating machinery is discussed. It is important that the exact power measurement of marine engine since the engine power is related to ship's usage and its shaft design. The engine equipped on the ship is assumed to rotating machine which can generate mechanical power by electrical energy. Two gearwheel and magnetic sensors are applied to measure torsional angle on the shaft. High resolution encoder is also applied to compensate the output signal from gearwheel. The calculation of shaft power is executed using measured signal and angular velocity of rotating machine.

  • This paper contains various vibration analysis of multi-stage shaft shape such as the bending, torsional and axial vibration. The shaft system is modeled as Timoshenko beam with the transverse shear and rotary inertia effect and the equation of motion is derived by Hamilton's principle with considering clamped-free boundary condition. Then, eigenvalue problem of discrete equation of motion for multi-stage shaft model is solved and got results of the natural frequency through the numerical analysis. Obtained numerical analysis results through Matlab program were compared with those of FEM analysis to verify the results. This study suggests that design of shaft system be consider torsional and axial vibration as well as bending vibration.
