  • Though there has been increasing use of large diameter drilled shaft as a foundation structure of bridges, current practice for quality control is to confirm the minimum required load carrying capacity during construction stage. For economic and appropriate design of drilled shaft, it is necessary to evaluate the load transfer mechanism by pile load tests during initial stage of construction and to use the test results as a feedback to a revision of initial design. In this paper, results of load tests peformed at several domestic sites are presented to investigate the load transfer characteristics of large diameter drilled shaft. It was found that most of the load on piles is sustained by shaft friction and that only small portion of the load reaches the bottom of the drilled shaft. Some test results of drilled shaft by Pile Driving Analyzer performed at same sites are also presented to compare the load transfer characteristics interpreted from static pile load tests.

  • The purpose of this study is to design and the analyze the stress of composited shaft which is wound by filament winding method. The composites shaft has high strength and reduction in weight compared to metal shaft. The classical laminate plate theory(CLT) was used fro analysis the stress, and for structure design. In order to replace metal shaft by composites shaft, the diameter of shaft was determined to $\phi$ 40. The ration of diameter was determined to 0.4 for torsional moment with CLT. In this result of analyzing the stress, composites shaft was safe $30^{\circ}~60^{\circ}$C of winding angle, and was fractured on $90^{\circ}$.

  • The carbon fiber epoxy composite material and aluminum have many advantages over other materials because of their high specific stiffness and good fatigue characteristics. Basically, the propeller shaft of automobile requires bending frequency of higher than 2,700 Nm and high natural frequency of higher than 9,200 rpm occurred by fast revolution. For this reason, natural frequency and torsion torque characteristics of hybrid shaft was studied in variation of its outer-diameter and thickness. Vibration and torque characteristics of hybrid shaft were compared by torsion tester, natural frequency experiments and FE analysis. Designed hybrid shaft satisfied its vibration and torque characteristics when its outer-diameter was 60 mm and thickness was 5 mm. Therefore, hybrid material enables to manufacture one piece structure hybrid propeller shaft rather than current two piece structure.

  • Sixty four tests were performed in a steel tank to investigate the axial responses of piles driven into organic soil prepared at two different densities using a drop hammer. Four different pile materials were used: wood, steel, smooth concrete, and rough concrete, with different length to diameter ratios. The results of the load tests showed that the shaft load capacity of rough concrete piles continuously increased with pile settlement. In contrast, the others pile types reached the ultimate shaft resistance at a settlement equal to about 10% of the pile diameter. The ratios of base to shaft capacities of the piles were found to vary with the length to diameter ratio, surface roughness, and the density of the organic soil. The ultimate unit shaft resistance of the rough concrete pile was always greater than that of other piles irrespective of soil condition and pile length. However, the ultimate base resistance of all piles was approximately close to each other.

  • The purpose of this study is the design of composite shaft which is wound by Filament Winding method. Classical laminated plate theory was used for analyzing the stress, and for structure design. The diameter and thickness of composite shaft were calculated by this theory. The result that if tensile stress was zero, torsion stress was a certain value below 0.4(diameter rate) and torsion strength was the highest value on $45^{\circ}C$(winding angle). In case of $90^{\circ}C$(winding angle), we have to consider the torsional monent when the composites shaft was load.

  • In this study, we developed the manufacturing technology of micro-hole and micro-shaft for micro punching system using micro electrical discharge machining and micro electro chemical machining. Micro punching dies of tungsten carbide with $55\;{\mu}m\;and\;110\;{\mu}m$ diameter and $250\;{\mu}m$ depth were made by micro electrical discharge machining. The form accuracy and surface roughness of die hole were pretty good and it was shown that the punched hole quality was fine. WC micro-shaft with $30\;{\mu}m$ diameter was made by the multistep micro electro chemical machining. The developed technologies can be effectively used in precision manufacturing of micro punching die and mass production of micro-shaft.

  • The helical pile is a manufactured steel pile consisting of one or more helix-shaped bearing plates affixed to a central shaft. This pile is installed by rotating the shaft into the ground to support structural loads. The advantages of helical piles are no need for boring or grout process, and ability to install with relatively light devices. The bearing capacity of the helical pile is exerted by integrating the bearing capacity of each helix plate attached to the steel shaft. In this paper, to estimate the bearing capacity of moderate-size helical piles, 6 types of helical piles were constructed with different shaft diameter, plate configuration and the penetration depth. A series of field loading tests was performed to evaluate the effect of helical pile configuration on the bearing capacity of helical pile, constructed in two different shaft diameters (i.e. 73 mm and 114 mm). In the same way, the diameter of bearing plate was also changed from 400mm to 250mm with one or three plates. As well, the penetration depth was varied from 3m to 6m to analyze the relation between the penetration depth and the bearing capacity. As a result, not only the increase of the shaft diameter, but also the number or diameter of helix bearing plates enhances the bearing capacity. Especially the configuration of the helix plate is more critical than the shaft diameter.

  • Fitting process carried out in automobile transmission assembly line is classified into three classes; heat fitting, press fitting, and their combined fitting. Heat fitting is a method that heats gear to a suitable range under the tempering temperature and squeezes it toward the outer diameter of shaft. Its stress depends on the yield strength of gear. Press fitting is a method that generally squeezes gear toward that of shaft at room temperature by press. Another method heats warmly gear and safely squeezes it toward that of shaft. Warm shrink fitting process for automobile transmission part is now gradually increased, but the parts (shaft/gear) assembled by this process produced dimensional change in both outer diameter and profile of the gear. So that it may cause noise and vibration between gears. In order to solve these problems, we need an analysis of warm shrink fitting process, in which design parameters are involved; contact pressure according to fitting interference between outer diameter of shaft and inner diameter of gear, fitting temperature, and profile tolerance of gear. In this study, an closed form equation to predict contact pressure and fitting load was proposed in order to develop optimization technique of warm shrink fitting process and verified its reliability through the experimental results measured in the field and FEM, that is, thermal-structural coupled field analysis. Actual loads measured in the field have a good agreement with the results obtained by theoretical and finite element analysis and also the expanded amounts of the outer diameters of the gears have a good agreement with results.
