  • In this paper, we proposed a face detection algorithm and a hardware implementation method for ROI(Region Of Interest) of AF(Auto Focusing). We used face features in skin regions of YCbCr color space for face detection. The face features are the number of skin pixels in face regions, edge pixels in eye regions, and shadow pixels in lip regions. The each feature was statistically selected by 2,000 sample pictures of face. The proposed algorithm detects two faces that are closer center of the image for considering the effectiveness of hardware resource. The detected faces are displayed by rectangle for ROI of AF, and the rectangles are represented by positions in the image about starting point and ending point of the rectangles. The proposed face detection method was verified by using FPGA boards and mobile phone camera sensor.

  • A method to measure the speed and distance of moving object is proposed using the stereo vision system. One of the most important factors for measuring the speed and distance of moving object is the accuracy of object tracking. Accordingly, the background image algorithm is adopted to track the rapidly moving object and the local opening operator algorithm is used to remove the shadow and noise of object. The extraction efficiency of moving object is improved by using the adaptive threshold algorithm independent to variation of brightness. Since the left and right central points are compensated, the more exact speed and distance of object can be measured. Using the background image algorithm and local opening operator algorithm, the computational processes are reduced and it is possible to achieve the real-time processing of the speed and distance of moving object. The simulation results show that background image algorithm can track the moving object more rapidly than any other algorithm. The application of adaptive threshold algorithm improved the extraction efficiency of the target by reducing the candidate areas. Since the central point of the target is compensated by using the binocular parallax, the error of measurement for the speed and distance of moving object is reduced. The error rate of measurement for the distance from the stereo camera to moving object and for the speed of moving object are 2.68% and 3.32%, respectively.

  • Since it was first studied in 1980, solar energy analysis model for geographic information systems has been used to determine the approximate spatial distribution of terrain. However, the spatial pattern was not able to be grasped in 3D (three-dimensional) space with low accuracy due to the limitation of input data. Because of computational efficiency, using a constant value for the brightness of the sky caused the simulation results to be less reliable especially when the slope is high or buildings are crowded around. For the above reasons, this study proposed a model that predicts solar energy of vertical surfaces of buildings with four stages below. Firstly, CIE (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) luminance distribution model was used to calculate the brightness distribution of the sky using NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) solar tracking algorithm. Secondly, we suggested a method of calculating the shadow effect using ray tracing. Thirdly, LOD (Level of Detail) 3 of 3D spatial data was used as input data for analysis. Lastly, the accuracy was evaluated based on the atmospheric radiation data collected through the ground observation equipment in Daejeon, South Korea. As a result of evaluating the accuracy, NMBE was 5.14%, RMSE 11.12, and CVRMSE 7.09%.

  • The study area adjoins with Yangsan fault in Sangbuk-myeon, Samsam-ri, Kyongsang-namdo and consist of the natural steep slope. After drawing data layer which have altitude by using digital topography data, it is converted to lattice DEM of $10m{\times}10m$ size. From this, gradient map of unit lattice, slant direction map and shadow relif map are made. Using flow apportioning algorithm, upper slope contributing area and wetness index by established lattice can be calculated. Area that have high wetness index shows lineament structure of northwest-southeast direction, and this agrees with shear fracture system. The result of electricity specific resistance survey in the study area shows that area of high wetness index has low electricity specific resistance anomaly. That is, wetness index conforms with distribution of fractured zone that accompanied chemical weathering of rock. Therefore, wetness index can be used as the method of detecting fractured zones and judging the stability of the area.

  • Vision-based vehicle detector systems are becoming increasingly important in ITS applications. Real-time operation, robustness, precision, accurate estimation of traffic parameters, and ease of setup are important features to be considered in developing such systems. Further, accurate vehicle detection is difficult in varied complex traffic environments. These environments include changes in weather as well as challenging traffic conditions, such as shadow effects and jams. To meet real-time requirements, the proposed system first applies a color background to extract moving objects, which are then tracked by considering their relative distances and directions. To achieve robustness and precision, the color background is regularly updated by the proposed algorithm to overcome luminance variations. This paper also proposes a scheme of feedback compensation to resolve background convergence errors, which occur when vehicles temporarily park on the roadside while the background image is being converged. Next, vehicle occlusion is resolved using the proposed prior split approach and through reasoning for rule-based tracking. This approach can automatically detect straight lanes. Following this step, trajectories are applied to derive traffic parameters; finally, to facilitate easy setup, we propose a means to automate the setting of the system parameters. Experimental results show that the system can operate well under various complex traffic conditions in real time.

  • Several repeater systems are used to enhance the cell coverage to location such as shadow and rural areas in mobile systems. But the general RF repeater solutions are not suitable for high power outdoor environment because it has the weakness such as self oscillation problem With adoption of a adaptive digital filter technology, feedback interference cancellation repeater prevents oscillation by detecting and canceling the unwanted feedback signal between transmission and receiver antenna. In this paper, dual NLMS based interference cancellation method is proposed and the step size adaptation can be implemented by the estimation of the feedback channel Doppler frequency characteristics. The performance of the proposed algorithm is quantified via analysis and simulation for the static and multipath fading feedback channels.

  • The coverage of the NDGPS is nationwide currently and by 2007 more than 2 NDGPS signal will be available in most of Korean peninsula both coastal area and inland. The role of NDGPS beacon is transmitting pseudorange corrections however if range or pseudorange can be measured from NDGPS beacon signal, it might be possible to construct an independent regional navigation system: The range from NDGPS beacon signal can be used as additional measurements to remove GPS shadow area and to improve accuracy and reliability of GPS. Furthermore, by adding Loran-C, a regional radio navigation system without GPS can be possible. In this paper, a feasibility study on the regional positioning system using NDGPS and LORAN-C are given. The results show that the NDGPS and LORAN-C can be used as a ground based regional navigation system if requirements such as synchronization of NDGPS network, dual coverage of NDGPS, navigation algorithm for both NDGPS and LORAN-C measurements and an efficient ASF compensation method are met.

  • Vehicle detection is the basic of traffic monitoring. Video based systems have several apparent advantages compared with other kinds of systems. However, In video based systems, shadows make troubles for vehicle detection. especially active shadows resulted from moving vehicles. In this paper a new method that combines background subtraction and edge detection is proposed for vehicle detection and shadow rejection. The method is effective and the correct rate of vehicle detection is higher than 98(%) in experiments, during which the passive shadows resulted from roadside buildings grew considerably. Based on the proposed vehicle detection method, vehicle tracking, counting, classification and speed estimation are achieved so that traffic information concerning traffic flow is obtained to describe the load of each lane.

  • A simulation-based approach is proposed to study the protective actions taken by residents during nuclear emergencies using cognitive findings. Human perception-based behaviors are not heavily incorporated in the evacuation study for nuclear emergencies despite their known importance. This study proposes a generic framework of perception-based behavior simulation, in accordance with the ecological concept of affordance theory and a formal representation of affordance-based finite state automata. Based on the generic framework, a simulation model is developed to allow an evacuee to perceive available actions and execute one of them according to Newton's laws of motion. The case of a shadow evacuation under nuclear emergency is utilized to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework. The illustrated planning algorithm enables residents to compute not only prior knowledge of the environmental map, but also the perception of dynamic surroundings, using widely observed heuristics. The simulation results show that the temporal and spatial dynamics of the evacuation behaviors can be analyzed based on individual perception of circumstances, while utilizing the findings in cognitive science under unavoidable data restriction of nuclear emergencies. The perception-based analysis of the proposed framework is expected to enhance nuclear safety technology by complementing macroscopic analyses for advanced protective measures.
