Sewerage is the system that improves the quality of human life and prevents many disasters such as floods. However the investigators in Korea only have been concerned about the sewer system, so the sewage treatment plant stays in the basic level like mapping. For example, only one attribute can be recognized in the linear object. Because of this limitation, it makes difficult to manage the linear attribute regarding to the sewage pipe plan. And it is impossible to control a partial (point type, line type) attribute changes of the linear object. We will therefore present the applicable method for the attribute changes of the linear object like the sewage pipe plans. For this reason, this paper is designed on the basis of Dynamic Segmentation(DS). DS has the advantage of giving the attribute value to the exact place in the linear object. As a result of using DS, the variety environment changes around the sewage pipes are applied to the building sewerage data. This also makes it possible to get a precise estimation for the maximum dirty water amount.
Although disinfection in drinking water treatment plants provides a safer water supply by inactivating pathogenic microorganisms, harmful disinfection by-products may be formed. In this study, the disinfectant, chlorine, was produced on-site from the electrolysis of salt (NaCl), and the by-products of the disinfection process, bromate and chlorate, were analyzed. The provisional guideline levels for bromate and chlorate in drinking water are $10{\mu}g/L$ and $700{\mu}g/L$, in Korea, respectively. Bromide salt was detected at concentrations ranging from 6.0 ~ 622 mg/kg. Bromate and chlorate were detected at concentrations ranging from non-detect (ND) ~ 45.3mg/L and 40.5 ~ 1,202 mg/L, respectively. When comparing the bromide concentration in the salt to the bromate concentration in the chlorine produced by salt electrolysis, the correlation of bromide to bromate concentration was 0.870 (active chlorine concentration from on-site production: 0.6-0.8%, n=40). The correlation of bromate concentration in the chlorine produced to that in the treated water was 0.866.
Several drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) produce the bottled tap waters (BTWs) as pilot production and provide them for noncommercial use. In 2008, acetaldehyde and chloral hydrate were detected in some BTWs and the public worry over the safety of the water. In this study, the BTWs produced from 7 DWTPs were tested for 13 chemicals including disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The level of four trihalomethanes (THMs) were increased up to 15 days. The average concentration of them was 0.0075 mg/L at the time of bottling and it was increased to 0.0214 mg/L after 15 days. The average acetaldehyde concentration was 0.0406 mg/L at the time of bottling but it was went up to 0.2251 mg/L after 11 days and then decreased. Although the initial concentrations of DBPs were below the drinking water standard, we also traced them at different storage conditions. Temperature affected the formations of THMs and acetaldehyde concentrations significantly. While the average concentration of THMs ranged from 0.0113 to 0.0182 mg/L at $25^{\circ}C$, it was increased to 0.0132 ~ 0.0256 mg/L at $50^{\circ}C$. In case of acetaldehyde, concentration ranged from 0.0901 to 0.2251 mg/L at $25^{\circ}C$, it was increased to 0.3394 ~ 1.0591 mg/L at $50^{\circ}C$. Throughout the tests with 7 BTWs samples, none of the chemicals was exceeded the drinking water standard of Korea. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid the exposure of BTWs to sunlight or high temperature during distribution and storage.
In many countries in order to manage corrosion of water treatment process, it is currently using Langelier index (LI). However, management of the Larson's ratio (LR) to compare corrosion management and LI which can be generated by the water treatment process is required. In this study, in order to ensure data LR, factors associated with the actual corrosion resistance of water treatment plant was measured. Using the measured data, the model equation can be estimated alkalinity, and using the statutory water quality data, LR and alkalinity is estimated. At comparison of the measured value and estimated value of alkalinity, it appeared in $R^2$ = 0.629, using the statutory water quality data and estimated alkalinity model, LR and alkalinity (Whole water treatment plants : 472) is estimated. Concentration of estimated alkalinity is 0.5 mg/L to 107.5 mg/L (average : 23.2 mg/L), and LR is 0.1 to 10 (average : 1.3). At tendency to corrosion of investigated LR, "No metal tendency" (>0.5) is 39 water treatment plants, 8.26 %, and "corrosion metal tendency" is 433 water treatment plants, 91.74%.

Korea needs to develop a rational system to separate stormwater utility fee from current sewerage fee. In this study, the scenario for calculating stormwater utility fee of Bupyeong-gu was suggested and the results were considered. For this purpose, the application of stormwater utility fee overseas and current domestic system were analyzed. A three step calculating scenario considering suitable domestic situation and impervious surface area was suggested. Water, sewerage usage, and hydrant data were collected. The total amount of water and sewerage fees for land use were calculated. The sewerage fee of Bupyeong-gu for the year 2014 was 21,685,446,578 won. Assuming that 40% of this amount was the cost associated to stormwater, the result showed that the fees for residential area in third step decreased by 0.77% compared to that of the first step. For commercial area, the stormwater utility fee decreased by 36.87%. For industrial area, although the consumption of water was similar to that of commercial area, the stormwater utility fee increased by 8.35%. For green area, the fee increased by 37.46%. This study demonstrated that the calculation of actual stormwater utility fee using impervious surface map and impervious Surface Ratio Estimation Methodology developed in previous studies is feasible.
Human Sapovirus (HuSaV) is one of the major causes of acute gastroenteritis in humans, and it is used as a molecular diagnostic technique based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from humans, food, shellfish, and aquatic environments. In this study, the HuSaV diagnosis technique was used in an aquatic environment where a number of PCR inhibitors are included and pathogens, such as viruses, are estimated to exist at low concentration levels. HuSaV-specific primers are improved to detect 38 strains registered in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The established optimal condition and the composition, including the RT-nested PCR primers and SL® Non-specific reaction inhibitor, were found to have 100 times higher sensitivity based on HuSaV plasmid than the previously reported methods (100 ag based on HuSaV plasmid 1 ng/μL). Through an artificial infection test, the developed method was able to detect at least 1 fg/μL of HuSaV plasmid contaminated with total nucleic acid extracted from groundwater. In addition, RT-nested PCR primer sets for HuSaV detection can react, and a positive control is developed to verify false positives. This study is expected to be used as a HuSaV monitoring method in the future and applied to the safety response to HuSaV from water environments.
Due to the global climate change, Korean peninsula is has been experiencing flooding and drought severely. It is hard difficult to manage water resources sustainably, because due to intensive precipitation in short periods and severe drought has increased in Korea. Reused water from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) could be a sustainable and an alternative water source near the urban areas. In order to understand the patterns of water reuse in Korea, annual water reuses data according to the times and regional governments were investigated from 2008 to 2019. The reused water from WWTP in Korea has been mainly used for river maintenance flow and industrial use, while agricultural use of water reuse has decreased with time. Metropolitan cities in Korea such as Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, and Incheon have been mainly used reused reusing water for river maintenance flow. Industrial water reuse has been limitedly applied recently for the planned industrial districts in Pohang, Gumi, Paju, and Asan. By using the collected annual water reuse data from the domestic sewerage statistics of sewerage, the optimistic and pessimistic future estimations of for future annual water reuse were suggested from 2020 to 2040 on a five year interval for every five years.
Biofilm formed on stainless and copper in water treatment plant was investigated for sixteen weeks. Biofilm reactor was specially designed for this study. It was similar to that of a real distribution pipe. Raw water, coagulated, settled, filtered and treated water were used in this study. The average number of heterotrophic bacteria counts was $1.6{\times}10^4CFU/ml$, $5.8{\times}10^3CFU/ml$, $1.8{\times}10^3CFU/ml$, $1.3{\times}10^2CFU/ml$, 1 CFU/ml, respectively. Density of biofilm bacteria formed on stainless and copper pipes in raw, coagulated and settled water increased above $2.9{\times}10^3CFU/cm^2$ within second weeks while more biofilm bacteria counts were found on the stainless pipe than on the copper pipe. In case of filtered water (free residue chlorine 0.44 mg/L), there was no significant difference in the number of biofilm bacteria on both pipes and biofilm bacteria below $18CFU/cm^2$ were detected on both pipe materials after fifth weeks. Biofilm bacteria were not detected on both pipe materials in treated water (free residue chlorine 0.88 mg/L). According to the results of DGGE analysis, Sphingomonadacae was a dominant species of biofilm bacteria formed on the stainless pipe while the copper pipe had Bradyrhizobiaceae and Sphingomonadaceae as dominant bands. In case of filtered water, a few bands (similar to Propionibacterium sp., Sphingomonas sp., Escherichia sp., and etc.) that have 16S rRNA sequences were detected in biofilm bacteria formed on both pipes after fifth weeks. Stainless pipe had higher species richness and diversity than the copper pipe.
BACKGROUND: According to Korean regulations, bottled waters (BWs) can not be treated with chemical disinfectants like chlorine, so UV and ozone disinfection is applied. During the past several years, chemicals were detected in some BWs, and the public was concerned about the safety of BWs. METHODS AND RESULTS: Mineral waters were stored for 180 days at $25^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$, tested acetaldehyde and formaldehyde by HPLC. When mineral waters were put in a PET bottles, the formaldehyde level ranged from 5 to $66{\mu}g/L$ during 180 days at $50^{\circ}C$. While the acetaldehyde level ranged from 31 to $221{\mu}g/L$, it was low than $16{\mu}g/L$ in glass bottle. CONCLUSION(s): This result showed that formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were detected higher in PET bottles than glass bottles, these also increased depending on the time of storage. Concentration of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde could be significantly influenced by the time of storage and temperature.
