  • Recently, an innovative method for wastewater treatment and nutrient removal was developed by combining the sequence batch reactor and membrane bioreactor to overcome pollution caused by shipboard sewage. This system is a modified form of the activated sludge process and involves repeated cycles of mixing and aeration. In the present study, the bacterial diversity and dominant microbial community in this wastewater treatment system were studied using the MACROGEN next generation sequencing technique. A high diversity of bacteria was observed in anaerobic and aerobic bioreactors, with approximately 486 species. Microbial diversity and the presence of beneficial species are crucial for an effective biological shipboard wastewater treatment system. The Arcobacter genus was dominant in the anaerobic tank, which mainly contained Arcobacter lanthieri (8.24%), followed by Acinetobacter jahnsonii (5.81%). However, the dominant bacterial species in the aerobic bioreactor were Terrimonas lutea (7.24%) and Rubrivivax gelatinosus (4.95%).

  • There have been several problems in treating shipboard sewage due to special environmental conditions of ship, such as limited space, rolling and pitching, change of temperature and so on. It was suggested that Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) might be suitable process for overcome these problems in terms of small size, high capacity of treating wastewater and full automation. In this study a SBR process was employed for biological treatment of organic wastes in the shipboard sewage. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about 97% of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged 93%. A disturbance operation caused by the treatment of Methylene Blue Active Substances(MBAS) was not observed.

  • The Korean government has made progress in its project for sewage distribution in rural areas to ensure the balanced development of the country and its water conservation system. The project for sewage distribution in rural areas was analyzed with the yearly operational results of municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP). The sewage characteristics of the MWTP in a rural area changed according to seasonal variations, and the lowest pollution concentrations were obtained in the summer. The treatment efficiency of nutrients in the biological treatment process changed slightly more than the treatment efficiency of organic compounds, and the lowest treatment efficiency was obtained in winter. In addition, the relationship between treatment efficiency and retention time and F/M ratio showed similar results despite seasonal variations. It was considered that sewage characteristics and treatment efficiency changed according to seasonal variations when the treatment process was selected in MWTPs in rural areas. Especially, Maintenance of MWPT is need for the stable treatment efficiency of nutrients in the winter.

  • Prior to utilization of energy and power generation, the biogas from anaerobic digestion of sewage treatment plant(46,000㎡/d) should be purified particularly hydrogen sulfide among the various kinds of impurities. This study has focused on the methane decreasing rate and the removal of both hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. In the case of partial circulation, 59.7% of methane gas was decreased to 57.4% in spite of oxidation process with micro-bubble. Carbon dioxide was removed from 38% to 32% and 76.1% of hydrogen sulfide was removed where 1,400ppm was introduced to the DIWS system, which indicated that DIWS system can be of use for the hydrogen sulfide removal of biogas from sewage treatment plant.

  • In Korea, ocean dumping has been widely used as the ultimate disposal of sewage sludge. However, ocean dumping of food wasted and sewage sludge from 2013 is expected to legally restricted as London convention on marine pollution prevention has been effective in 2009. This research aims to examine the effect of HEAS in treating the environmental pollution load caused by organic high concentrated sludge. Thus, onsite laboratory scale treatability test using HEAS was adopted to treat the high concentrated organic sludge from sewage and industrial wastewater treatment plant. The research results showed that the HEAS is useful to reduce the environmental pollution caused by organic high concentrated sludge. Specific results are as follows. 1. The organic removal after the sludge digestion using the high efficiency aeration system was 55.2-85.8%. Although these results were lower than those from the general sewage treatment, the high efficiency aeration system could be evaluated as efficient, considering the object sludge contained the industrial waster water. 2. The average removal efficiency was about 25.2%. 3. It was revealed that sludge digestion by the high efficiency aeration system could effectively contribute to the sludge treatment cost. Especially, the high efficiency aeration system is more applicable to the onsite treatment of small sewage and wastewater treatment plant that contains high solid content sludge, industrial wastewater sludge, high fixed solid sludge.

  • Water cycle within the human civilization has become important with urbanization. To date, water cycle in the eco-system has been the focus in identifying the degree of water cycle in cities, but in practicality, water cycle within the human civilization system is taking on an increasing importance. While in recent years plans to reuse water have been implemented to restore water cycle in cities, the effect that such reuse has on the entire water cycle system has not been analyzed. The analysis on the effect that water reuse has on urban areas needs to be go beyond measuring the cost-savings and look at the changes brought about in the entire city's water cycle system. This study uses a SWAT model and water balance analysis to review the effects that water reuse has on changes occurring in the urban water cycle system by linking the water cycle within the eco-system with that within the human civilization system. The SWAT model to calculate the components of water cycle in the human civilization system showed that similar to measured data, the daily changes and accumulative data can be simulated. When the amount of water reuse increases in urban areas, the surface outflow, amount of sewer discharge and the discharged amount from sewage treatment plants decrease, leading to a change in water cycle within our human civilization system. The determinant coefficients for reduced surface outflow amount and reduced sewer discharge were 0.9164 and 0.9892, respectively, while the determinant coefficient for reduced discharge of sewage treatment plants was 0.9988. This indicates that with an increase in water reuse, surface flow, sewage and discharge from sewage treatment plants all saw a linear reduction.

  • In order to assess sewage treatment technology necessary to achieve water quality criteria in the watershed and to ensure best treatment technology is applied in building and expanding PSTWs when establishing the Watershed Sewer System Maintenance Plan, it is necessary to develop assessment guidelines to determinate the best treatment technologies applicable to the public sewage treatment works(PSTWs). Sewage treatment technologies such as anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic treatment process are employed at PSTWs, and treatment efficiency varies due to many factors such as how the PSTWs are operated. Therefore, analyzing assessment guideline of best available technology(BAT) using currently in USA and EU, this study presents assessment parameters for the assessment guidelines to be used in determining the best treatment technologies applicable to PSTWs. We have a plan to implement pilot assessment in preparation for the final assessment guidelines based on the results of professionals survey and to determine weighted factors and assessment parameters using analytic hierarchy process (AHP).
