  • To predict the real bearing capacity and settlement of the shallow foundation the plate load test results were used. But there is no field estimation method about igneous weathered soil and rock. Therefore, to predict the settlement equation, the plate load test about igneous weathered soil and rock was done in this study. To analyze the load ~ relative settlement curve by normalization, it did not use normal analysis method, but the load ~ relative settlement (s/B, s : settlement, B : breadth of plate) was used. As a result of normalization by load ~ relative settlement conception, the curve was regular regardless of plate diameter and it was suggested the relationship of in-situ soil condition and results.

  • To improve the problem that the settlement curve of the consolidation theory of Terzaghi does not match well with the actual settlement curve, we included a secondary compression settlement and analyzed it by varying the beginning point and then obtained the following results. The current methods of calculating the compression index from the  log𝜎 curve and the coefficient of consolidation from the time-dependent settlement curve for each consolidation pressure proved that the final settlement amount will be consistent after a long time, but the actual settlement amount will always be smaller than the predicted settlement amount during the settlement progress stage. The consolidation factors estimated by the curve fitting with the condition that the secondary compression begins in the second half of the primary compression showed similar values to the consolidation factors estimated by the curve fitting for the primary compression only, and the settlement curves were in better agreement throughout the compression. It showed different values, showing low validity. It can be inferred that secondary compression acts from the point when a significant portion of the excess pore water pressure is dissipated, and the loading stress begins to have more influence on the skeletal structure of the soil. Analysis results show that secondary compression begins at the range of 91 % to 98 % on the average degree of primary consolidation.

  • Applicability of hyperbolic settlement prediction method to consolidation settlement in the dredged and reclaimed ground was assessed by analyzing results of centrifuge tests modelling self-weight consolidation of soft marine clay. From literature review about self-weight consolidation of soft marine clays located in southern coast in Korea, constitutive relationships of void ratio - effective stress - permeability and typical self-weight consolidation curves with time were obtained by analyzing centrifuge model experiments. For the condition of surcharge loading, exact solution of consolidation settlement curve obtained by using Terzaghi's consolidation theory was compared with results predicted by the hyperbolic method. It was found to have its own inherent error to predict final consolidation settlement. From results of analyzing thc self-weight consolidation with time by using this method, it predicted relatively well in error range of 0.04~18% for the case of showing the linearity in the relationship between T vs T/S in the stage of consolidation degree of 60~90 %. However, it overestimated the final settlement with large errors if those relation curves were nonlinear.

  • In this study, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed according to finite strain consolidation theory using a nonlinear constitutive relationship equation. Results of parametric sensitivity analysis shows that the final settlement, initial height, and initial void ratio exerted the greatest effect, and the coefficients of the void ratio-effective-stress. Proposed design charts were analyzed for three regions using a representative constitutive relationship equation that enables major dredged-reclaimed construction sites in Korea. The regional design charts can be calculated accurately for the final settlement because it is applied directly to the numerical analysis results, except for reading errors. A general design chart applicable to all marine clays is proposed through correlation analysis of the main parameters. A final self-weight consolidation settlement with various initial void ratios and initial height conditions should be estimated easily using the general design chart and constitutive relationship. The estimated final settlement using the general design chart is similar to the results of numerical analysis obtained using finite strain consolidation theory. Under an overburden pressure condition, design charts for estimating consolidation settlement are proposed for three regions in Korea.

  • In this study, a new formula of settlement at the head of IGM was suggested and the applicability of suggested formula was verified with field test results. This suggested formula was the function of the settlement at the shaft head and the elastic compression of shaft. The applicability of suggested formula was verified with the result of in-situ load test. Also, the bearing capacity of drilled shaft with the IGM's theory was compared with those of classical theories. The results showed that classical method showed smaller values of bearing capacity than those of field load test data. The results of analysis also showed that the suggested formula and IGM's theory were applicable for the estimation of bearing capacity with the increase of shaft settlement. Especially, settlement correction factor($k_m$), which reflects ground condition and load transfer characteristics, increases as the applying load and shaft deformation increase. This suggested formula was applicable for medium density or higher density of soil condition and $k_m=1$ means yielding load for firm soil condition.

  • This study describes the results of laboratory model test on settlement of soil contaminated with heavy metals, in order to evaluate the applicability of VMS to the measurement of gound settlements generated during the purification of contaminated soil. The measurement results for settlement of contaminated soil were compared using a 3D-Visual Monitoring System (VMS) based on digital photogrammetry and a total station. The test result showed that the settlement of the soil contaminated with heavy metals occurred a lot in the experimental condition in which the hydrophilic filter was applied. The minimum and maximum error ranges of VMS were calculated as ±0.36mm and ±0.87mm, respectively, and the error of VMS was satisfied in all experimental conditions. The average error rate of VMS was lower in the hydrophilic filter condition than in the hydrophobic filter condition. Therefore, it was evaluated that VMS can be applied to measure the settlement of contaminated soil.

  • If roads, bridges, buildings, etc. are built on the ground with soft clay or organic soil, there may be a lot of problems in geotechnical engineering such as settlement and stability due to the large settlement and lack of bearing capacity. In extreme cases, it may appear due to shear failure or collapse of the constructed structure, so a ground improvement method is indispensable to increase the strength of the ground and to suppress settlement. In this study, the settlement according to each groundwater level condition was analyzed using the measurement results for the groundwater level conditions, one of the important factors in predicting the settlement in dredged and reclaimed ground, and the groundwater level conditions applied to the settlement analysis were proposed by comparing it with settlement generated 5 years after construction. As a result of the analysis, it is judged that it is reasonable to apply the measured groundwater level during construction and the low water ordinary neap tide (L.W.O.N.T) during load application for the groundwater level in the settlement analysis. In addition, in the case of the dredged and reclaimed ground, it is estimated that the water pressure acting on the clay layer is nonlinear, as the result of the observations of the head of water at the observation points above and below the in-situ clay layer were different.

  • In this research problems of recent design methods and their improvement for SIP in domestic areas were studied by using the characteristics of load-settlement curves and bearing capacity from field loading tests. Elastic and plastic settlement for total settlement in each loading step conducted domestic areas had a tendency. From these tendency and bearing capacity determined by loading tests we can ascertain that empirical chart can be assistant tool in SIP design. It showes that SIP design using N-value in domestic area with soil condition of grarute type results in very conservative bearing capacity, to be opposed in soil with unprofitable geological condition the design can be insecure. Also, we can ascertain that Meyerhof's bearing capacity used modified N-value on tip part of pile is more applicable than recent design method where tip bearing capacity is 20NAp N-value limited to 50. These results show that modified design method can he more economic than before because of using pile's bearing capacity to tolerable load of pile material.

  • In this study, performance of reinforced railroad roadbeds with the reinforced roadbed materials were investigated through the real scale roadbed tests. It was also found that the reinforced roadbed with reinforced roadbed materials has less elastic and plastic settlement than the one with soil. The slag roadbed was more effective than the crushed stone roadbed with the same condition for load distribution. Therefore considering overall characteristics of reinforced roadbed material, the optimum thickness was recommended as 50 cm. Furthermore the real scale model test under the simulated rainfall condition, the settlement in the slag roadbed was about 8 times smaller than the settlement in the soil roadbed.
