  • Inflorescence architecture mainly contributes to final grain yield in crops. Sorghum inflorescence is basically composed of one fertile sessile spikelet (SS) and two infertile pedicellate spikelets (PS). To identify regulatory factors involved in the inflorescence architecture, we screened an EMS mutagenesis population from the pedigreed sorghum mutant library. We found inflorescent architecture mutants, named as multi-seed mutants, msd, with gained fertile ability in PS and also an increased number of floral branches. In natural sorghum populations, it is not common that are fertile. A detailed dissection of developmental stages of wild type and msd1 mutant described that the PS in wild type do not have floral organs, including ovary, stigma, filament and anther, while the msd1 mutants generate intact floral organ in the sessile spikelet. We found MSD1 encoded a TCP transcription factor using bulk segregant analysis (BSA) of F2 population, and was a strongly enriched expression during inflorescence developmental stages. We proposed that MSD1 functions to suppress floral organ maintenance at PS during inflorescence development in Sorghum. To explore the regulatory network associated with PS fertility, whole genome expression profiling was performed at 4 different developmental stages in 6 various tissue types between wild type and msd1. Taken together, we demonstrated that MSD1 was involved in the plant hormone and maybe influenced program cell death in PS via the activation of plant hormonal pathway.

  • Tumors originated from peripheral nerve tissues are neurofibroma, neurilemoma, plexiform neurofibroma, malignant schwannoma, and granular cell tumor. Neurofibromas seem to occur in two forms : The first one is circumscribed solitary neurofibroma and the second group is neurofibromatosis or Von Recklinghausen's disease, which is a congenital and familial disease, presenting abnormalities of the skin, nerve system, bones and soft tissue. A solitary neurofibroma is a benign, relatively circumscribed, noncapsulated tumor which often presents in the skin and subcutaneous tissue as a soft sessile or pedunculated mass. It may occur anywhere in the head and neck, but the common site of the occurrence is the tongue, buccal mucosa, palate in frequency. Since solitary neurofibroma is a relatively radioresistant and its recurrence rate seem to be low, the treatment of choice is surgical excision. The author would like to present a case of unusually large solitary neurofibroma occured in the chin, which was successfully treated with surgical excision and reconstructed using deltopectoral flap and tongue flap.

  • This study used glycerol dimethacrylate with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), MA (methacrylic acid) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Measurement of the physical properties of the copolymerized polymer showed that the water content was 22~32%, refractive index was 1.442~1.463 and visible ray transmittance 90.0~90.5% while the contact angle showed a distribution between 56 and $65^{\circ}$. Also, the measurement showed that the decreased amount of contact angle of the copolymer measured using the sessile drop method ranged between $9.89^{\circ}$ and $18.99^{\circ}$ with increase of glycerol dimethacrylate. Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymer is suitable for use as a material to high wettability ophthalmic lenses.

  • To understand the composition and community changes of benthic species by water depth (5 m, 20 m, 30 m) in the cage facilities, net substrate made of fish cages were installed at intervals of 2 months from March to September 2019, which is the main period of sessile organism recruitment. Water temperature and salinity varied in the ranges of 1~5℃ and 1~4 mg/L at 5 m from June to August, respectively, and less difference was observed according to water depth in other investigation periods. A total of 37 benthic animals were recruited, and Kamptozoa unid., Caprella scaura and Jassa slatteryi were verified during the entire study period. Mytilus galloprovincialis, a Mediterranean mussel, showed seasonality dominant only from spring to early summer (March to July). The community structure classified by temporal and spatial factors, and Bugula neritina, Kamptozoa unid., and Sertularella sp. contributed to the formation of the community. The depth of 5 m was exposed to environmental changes in water temperature and salinity temporally, so there was a seasonal variation in the composition of the sessile organism, but at depths of 20 m and 30 m, there was less significant environmental change and it showed relatively stable than 5 m.

  • Background: Osteomas are benign, slow-growing bone tumors that can be classified as central, peripheral, or extraskeletal. Central osteomas arise from the endosteum, peripheral osteomas from the periosteum, and extraskeletal osteomas within the muscle. Frontal peripheral osteomas are mainly encountered in plastic surgery. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of patients with frontal peripheral osteomas. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who visited our hospital with frontal peripheral osteomas between January 2014 and June 2022. We analyzed the following variables: age, sex, tumor type (sessile or pedunculated), single or multiple, size, history of head trauma, operation, and recurrence. Results: A total of 39 patients and 41 osteomas were analyzed, of which 29 osteomas (71%) were sessile and 12 osteomas (29%) were pedunculated. The size of the osteomas ranged from 4 to 30 mm, with an average size of 10 mm. The age of patients ranged from 4 to 78 years with a mean age of 52 years. There were seven men (18%) and 32 women (82%), and the man-to-woman ratio was 1:4.6. Two patients (5%) had multiple masses, with two osteomas in each, while only two patients (5%) had a history of head trauma. Twenty-nine patients (74%) underwent ostectomy by a direct approach, and none of the patients experienced recurrence. Conclusion: The epidemiologic data of our study will help plastic surgeons encounter frontal peripheral osteomas in the field to provide proper management for their patients.

  • Electrowetting is a versatile tool to handle tiny droplets and forms a backbone of digital microfluidics. Numerical analysis is necessary to fully understand the dynamics of electrowetting, especially in designing electrowetting-based devices, such as liquid lenses and reflective displays. We developed a numerical method to analyze the general contact-line problems, incorporating dynamic contact angle models. The method is based on the conservative level set method to capture the interface of two fluids without loss of mass. We applied the method to the analysis of spreading process of a sessile droplet for step input voltages and oscillation of the droplet for alternating input voltages in electrowetting. The result was compared with experimental data. It is shown that contact line friction significantly affects the contact line motion and the oscillation amplitude. The pinning process of contact line was well represented by including the hysteresis effect in the contact angle models.

  • In order to estimate the wettability of the borosilicate glasses with different composition on the noble metals of gold and silver, the measurements of the contact angle between the solid and the liquid were made at various temperatures and holding times using the sessil-drop method. The wetting behavior and the adhesion of the phases were strongly influenced by the thermal or the physical characteristics of the materials. The dependence of wetting angle ($\theta$) on the holding time (t) could be represented by the relation of $\theta$=a.tb, whereby the wettability of the systems was quantitatively compared. Also with increasing content of borosilicate glass in the glass-gold matrix composite, the tensile strength was decreased whereas the elastic modulus was increased.

  • Sessile barnacle, Balanus trigonus Darwin, was collected from the intertidal rocks and the external shells of bivalve Mylius coruscus. The nauplius and cyprid larvae were cultured in a constant temperature cabinet at a temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and a light regime of 14 h light and 10 h darkness. Larval development includes the six nauplius stages and a cyprid stage prior to settlement and metamorphosis to the young adult. Morphological characteristics including antennules, antennae and mandibles are described and illustrated. All nauplius larvae have trilobed labra typical in balanoides. The developmental time taken from newly hatched nauplius I to cyprid was $9\~13$ days and averaged 11 days.

  • Acinetospora filamentosa and Microspongium stilophorae are reported as new records from South Korea based on morphological and molecular analyses. A. filamentosa is mainly characterized by having the sparsely branched erect filaments, the scattered meristematic zones, forming crampons, plurilocular sporangia on both prostrate filaments and lower part of erect filaments, and spherical to oval unilocular sporangia formed either sessile or with a pedicel. M. stilophorae is an epiphytic thalli mostly on Stilophora sp. It is characterized by prostrate filaments with irregular cells, short erect filaments with short ramuli, phaeophycean hairs, uniseriate plurilocular sporangia on the terminal part of erect filament. Our molecular analyses of rbcL and cox1 genes reveals that A. filamentosa and M. stilophorae are nested within the clades of Acinetospora and Microspongium, respectively.
