A Comparative Study of the Concentration of Salivary and Blood Glucose in Normal and Diabetic Subjects

  • Advantage of saliva analysis are the ease of sample collection and that samples can be collected more frequently with much less stress on the patient. The objective of the present study was to comparatively evaluate the concentrations of saliva and fasting serum glucose in both normal and diabetic subjects. The mean salivary glucose level in diabetic patients was $15.66{\pm}17.1$ mg/dl and $1.78{\pm}1.72$ mg/dl (P = 0.0006) in the control group. The mean fasting serum glucose level in diabetic patients was $202.12{\pm}66.91$ mg/dl, while that in the control group was $94.21{\pm}14.97$ mg/dl (P < 0.0001). The 0.95 degree of correlation between salivary and fasting serum glucose could be demonstrated. The concentration of salivary and fasting serum glucose was not significant different betweeen the measurements for male and female. In the oral glucose tolerance test (75g), the glucose concentration in saliva progressively increased during the first 30 minutes of the test and then progressively decreased, reaching at minutes 120 ~ 180 lowest point as like fasting serum glucose concentration. We can conclude that salivary glucose concentration was significantly higher in the diabetic subjects and that there was significant correlation between salivary and fasting serum glucose concentration. Measurement of salivary glucose could be a useful test having good correlation between salivary and fasting serum glucose concentration.

  • The purpose of this study was to Investigate the response of fasting serum glucose and basal insulin to dietary omega-3 fatty fish in normal subjects. Nineteen healthy female volunteer subjects were divided into two groups, depending on fish preference test. Low ap3 fatty acid group for 7 days received a experimental Inlet containing mackeral fish 100g. Calorie intake was 1780 kcal /day. The average 4ally u-3 fatty acid consumption from fish was 3.87g /day (1.03g EPA, 2.849 DHA) . High n-3 fatty acid group was given 7.74g maine u-3 fatty acid (200g mackeral fish) consisting of 2.06g EP45.68g DHA. Calorie intake was 1815 local /day Fasting blond serum glucose, insulin levels were measured at baseline, 7days after experimental diet. In the beginning the levels of fasting serum glucose, basal insulin were not different between both groups. There were no significant changes in fasting serum glucose, insulin levels by experimental diets. These data indicate that marine ar3 fatty acid consumption have no deleterious effect on glycemic control in normal subjects.

  • Four out of 15 dogs were successfully induced diabetes mellitus with intravenous iqiection of 30 mg of streptozotgin and 50 mg of alloxan monohydrate per kilogram body weight and maintained more than 9 weeks without iqiection of insulin or oral hypoglycemic sgent Histopathologicallyi these four dogs have typical diabetic lesions such as degeneration and vacuolation of pancreatic islet cells, and fatty change of liver at necropsy in the end of study. Serum glucose level increased dramatically at 24 hours post-injection but serum fructosamine level increased gradually and reached plateau at 31-41 days post-injection of streptozotocin and alloxan. Serum fructosamine concert%lion correlated very well with serum glucose concentration of preceding 4-7 weeks in experimentally induced diabetic dogs. Our data suggest that serum fructosamine reflects mean glucose concentration of preceding 4-7 weeks in experimentally induced diabetic dogs.

Association between the serum estrone-to-estradiol ratio and parameters related to glucose metabolism and insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

  • Objective: We aimed to evaluate associations between the ratio of serum estrone (E1) to estradiol (E2) and parameters related to serum glucose metabolism and insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: In total, 133 women between the ages of 18 and 35 diagnosed with PCOS were enrolled in this study. All participants with PCOS underwent blood tests to determine hormonal and biochemical metabolic parameters and a standard 2-hour 75-g oral glucose tolerance test. They were divided into two groups according to the serum E1-to-E2 ratio: group 1 (E1/E2 ratio <2.0) and group 2 (E1/E2 ratio ≥2.0). Results: In the comparative analysis, the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was the only clinical variable that was significantly different between the two groups. Patients with a higher E1/E2 ratio showed higher fasting insulin levels, homeostasis model for insulin resistance, and postprandial glucose level at 2 hours (PPG2). In a correlation analysis, only PPG2 was significantly related to the serum E1/E2 ratio. However, after controlling for the confounding effects of body mass index (BMI) and WHR, fasting glucose was also significantly correlated with the serum E1/E2 ratio. Conclusion: Women with PCOS with a higher serum E1/E2 ratio were found to be more likely to show higher fasting insulin and postprandial glucose levels. Significant correlations were found between the serum E1/E2 ratio and both fasting and postprandial serum glucose levels after adjusting for BMI and WHR in women with PCOS.

The Study of Relationship among Serum Leptin, Nutritional Status, Serum Glucose and Lipids of Middle-school Girls (일부 사춘기 여중생의 혈청 Leptin 함량과 영양소섭취상태 및 혈당, 혈청지질과의 상관관계 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among urn leptin, nutritional status, and urn lipids, glucose of 99 middle school girls residing in Kyluggi-do, Korea. Subjects were assigned to one of three groups such as underweight(BMI < 20, n=38), normal(20$\leq$BMI<25, n=36) and over weight(BMI$\geq$25, n=25) groups. The nutritional status of the subjects was evaluated by anthropometric measurements, questionnaires, 24-hr dietary recalls and blood anal),sis. The results were as follows : The mean age, body weight, height and BMI were 13.93 years, 55.19kg, 158.40cm and 21.96kg/㎡ respectively. The mean menarche age of the subjects was 12.64 years and the mean daily energy intake was 94.22% off RDA for Koreans. The energy ratio from carbohydrate fat and protein was 63: 24: 13. Underweight group showed the lowest intakes of oils and fats among three groups(p<0.05). The mean serum levels of leptin, glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol. LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were 10.57ng/ml 78.80mg/dl, 12.29mg/dl, 48.07mg/dl, 93.50mg/dl and 78.61mg/d1, respectively. The mean atherogenic index was 2.37. There were significant increases in serum leptin, glucose, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and atherogenic index of subjects with increases in their BMIs. Serum leptin showed a significantly positive correlation with BMI(p<0.001), body fat percent(p<0.001). When BMI was adjused, serum leptin showed a significantly positive partial correlations with intakes of animal protein(p<0.05), milks and animal foods(p<0.05), Serum leptin showed a significantly positive correlation with serum glucose(p<0.05) total cholesterol(p<0.01), LDL-cholesterol(p<0.001), triglyceride(p<0.001) and atherogenic index(p<0.001), however, it had significantly negative correlations with HDL-cholesterol(p<0.05). Therefore, these results suggest that the increase of serum levels of leptin may elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease and lipids and some nutrient intakes may be related with serum leptin levels.   • Chrominum(cr) plays an important role in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and Cr deficiency impairs glucose tolerance and increase serum cholestrol and triglyceride. The relationships of serum Cr with serum glucose and lipids was examined in 79 female college students in Choong-Nam ares. Subjects were devided into underweight. normal and overweight groups according to their BM11. The average age, weight, height and BMI were 21.9yr, 55.89kg, 158.54cm and $22.62kg/m^2$, respectively. Height were not di fferent between groups. Serum Cr and glucose concentrations were not signi ficantly different between groups. However, there were tendency of increasing serum Cr level with increasing body weight. Serum cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were significantly lower in underweight group than other groups. BM! had positive corelations wi th LDL-cholesterol, Al and LPH, and negative corelations with HDL-cholesterolltotal cholesterol ratio. Serum Cr concentration had positive corelation with serum glucose concentration and negative corelation with LDL-chloestrol and LPH.nd LPH.

  • Chrominum (cr) plays an important role in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism , and Cr deficiency impairs glucose tolerance and increases serum cholestero and triglyceride. The relationship of serum Cr with serum blucose and lipids was examined in 79 female college students in Choong-Nam areas. Subjects were divided into underweight , normal , and overweight groups according to their BMI. The average age, wiegth , height and BMI were 21.9yr, 55.9kg, 158.5cm and 22.6kg/$m^2$, respectively. Heights were not different between groups. Serum Cr and glucose concentrations werenot significantly different between groups. However, there was a tendency toward lowered serum Cr levels in under and over-weight groups. Serum cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were significant lower in the underweight group than in other groups. BMI had positive correlation with LDL-cholesterol , AI and LPH , and negative corelations with HDL -cholesterol /total cholesterol ratio. Low serum Cr concentration was related to increased LDL-cholesterol and total cholesterol, and related to decreased HDL cholesterol in all groups . Therfore, serum Cr levels were lowered in abnormal weight groups and Cr may playan important role in coronrary heart diesease.

  • Blood glucose curves in the management for diabetic patients have several limitations including intermittent assessment of blood glucose concentration, hospitalization, patient restraint, and repeated phlebotomy. The aim of this study was to apply and evaluate a wireless continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) in healthy dogs. Subcutaneous interstitial glucose concentrations in 7 dogs were continuously monitored and recorded by wireless CGMS. During induced hyperglycemia, the interstitial glucose concentrations were compared with whole blood glucose concentrations measured by glucometer and serum glucose concentrations measured by automated chemistry analyzer, respectively. There were no significant differences among interstitial, whole blood and serum glucose concentrations. The interstitial glucose concentrations had a good correlation to serum glucose concentrations. The real-time wireless CGMS is a valuable tool for monitoring system of glucose concentrations in dogs. Use of the CGMS for diabetic patients will provide accurate information over traditional blood glucose curves.

Comparisons of BMI, Blood Lipid Profile, Blood Pressure and Nutrient Intakes by Serum Insulin Concentrations (정상 성인의 혈청 인슐린 농도에 따른 비만지수, 혈청 지질, 혈압 및 영양소 섭취상태 비교)

  • This study was conducted to figure out the differences of the BMI, blood lipids, blood pressure and nutrient intakes by serum insulin concentration among adults in Korea. Ninety-three subjects(male : n=37, female : n=56) participated in this study. The subjects were grouped by serum insulin concentrations into two groups-hyperinsulinemia group(n=17) and normoinsulinemia group(n=76). Anthropometric measurements, blood lipid profiles, blood pressure, oral glucose tolerance test, and daily nutrient intakes were analyzed. And serum glucose and insulin secretion pattern as shown through and oral glucose tolerance test were performed. BMI (p<0.05) and WHR(p<0.01) were significantly higher in hyperinsulinemic group than in normoinsulinemia group. There was no differences in fasting blood glucose level between groups, but total glucose area (p<0.001) and insulin glucose resistance(p<0.001) were significantly higher in hyperinsulinemia group than in normoinsulinemia higher in hyperinsulinemia group, but HDL-cholesterol(p<0.05), and systolic blood pressure(p<0.05) were significantly higher in hyperinsulinemia group, but HDL-cholesterol(p<0.001) was significantly lower in hyperinsulinemia group. They showed significant differences in energy, carbohydrate, potassium, riboflavin, niacin and dietary fiber intakes(p<0.05), the intake of those nutrients were low in normoinsulinemia group. Further investigation is necessary to determine the effects of amounts and types of carbohydrate and dietary fiber on serum insulin concentrations.

Effects of Pumpkin Water Extract Supplement on Serum Lipid and Fasting Glucose Levels in Female Collegians (호박찜 추출물의 보충섭취가 여대생의 혈중 지질과 혈당에 미치는 영향)

  • To elucidate the effect of a 4 week dietary supplementation with pumpkin water extract on serum lipid and fasting glucose levels, 41 female collegians residing in the Gyeonggi area were recruited. The subjects were divided into three groups: placebo-control (PC, n=11), treatment A (TA, 100 ml/day, n=13), and treatment B (TB, 300 ml/day, n=17). Total serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and fasting glucose were analyzed. The average age, height, weight, and body mass index of the subjects were 21.3 years, 161.1 cm, 53.0 kg, and 20.4 $kg/m^2$, respectively. The average total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, TG, and fasting glucose level (mg/dl) were 171.4${\pm}$26.1, 63.5${\pm}$11.4, 92.6${\pm}$22.9, 76.8${\pm}$32.0, and 89.1${\pm}$8.2, respectively. There were no significant differences among the three groups in any measured parameters, and between the pre- and post-study values of the all parameters. The results indicated that the 4 week pumpkin water extract supplementation (100 ml, 300 ml) did not influence the serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, TG and fasting glucose level in female collegians.
