As aeration is an energy-intensive process, its control has become more important to save energy and to meet strict effluent limits. In this study, predictive aeration control based on the respirometric method has been applied to the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process. The variation of the respiration rate by nitrification was great and obvious, so it could be a very useful parameter for the predictive aeration control. The maximum respiration rate due to nitrification was about 60 mg O2/L·h and the maximum specific nitrification rate was about 7.5 mg N/g MLVSS·h. The aeration time of the following cycle of the SBR was daily adjusted in proportion to that which was previously determined based on the sudden decrease of respiration rate at the end of nitrification in the respirometer. The aeration time required for nitrification could be effectively predicted and it was closely related to influent nitrogen loadings. By the predictive aeration control the aerobic period of the SBR has been optimized, and energy saving and enhanced nitrogen removal could be obtained.
The respirometric technique has been used to analyze the nitrification process in a sequencing batch reactor(SBR) treating municipal wastewater. Especially the profile of the respiration rate very well expressed the reaction characteristics of nitrification. As the nitrification process required a significant amount of oxygen for nitrogen oxidation, the respiration rate due to nitrification was high. The maximum nitrification respiration rate, which was about $50mg\;O_2/L{\cdot}h$ under the period of sufficient nitrification, was related directly to the nitrification reaction rate and showed the nitrifiers activity. The growth rate of nitrifiers is the most critical parameter in the design of the biological nutrient removal systems. On the basis of nitrification kinetics, the maximum specific growth rate of nitrifiers in the SBR was estimated as $0.91d^{-1}$ at $20^{\circ}C$, and the active biomass of nitrifiers was calculated as 23 mg VSS/L and it was about 2% of total biomass.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the operational characteristics of wastewater treatment using Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) with Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) separator in the pilot plant. Pilot plant experiments were conducted using SBR with AGS separator and pollution removal efficiencies were evaluated based on the operational condition and surface properties of AGS. The results of the operation on water quality of the effluent showed that the average concentration of total organic carbon, suspended solids, nitrogen, and phosphorus was 6.89 mg/L, 7.33 mg/L, 7.33 mg/L, and 0.2 mg/L, respectively. All these concentrations complied the effluent standard in Korea. The concentration of mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) fluctuated, but the AGS/MLSS ratio was constant at 86.5±1.3%. Although the AGS/MLSS ratio was constant, sludge volume index improved. These results suggested that the particle discharged fine sludge and increased the AGS praticle size in the AGS. Optical microscopy revealed the presence of dense AGS at the end of the operation, and particles of > 0.6 mm were found. Compared to those of belt-type AGS separator, the required area and power consumption of the hydrocyclone-type AGS separator were reduced by 27.5% and 83.8%, respectively.
Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge by the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) was investigated to evaluate the performance of the ASBR process at a critical condition of high-solids-content fined. The reactors were operated at an HRT of 10 days with an equivalent loading rate of 0.8-1.5 gVS/L/d at 35$^{\circ}C$ The main conclusions drawn from this study were as follows: 1. Digestion of a municipal wastewater sludge was possible using the ASBR in spite of high concentration of settleable solids in the sludge. The ASBRS with 3- and 4-day cycle period showed almost identical high digestion performances. 2. No adverse effect on digestion stability was observed In the ASBRS in spite of withdrawal and replenishment of 30% or 40% of liquid contents. A conventional anaerobic digester could be easily converted to the ASBR without any stability problem. 3. Flotation thickening occurred in thicken step of the ASBRS throughout steady state, and floating bed volume at the end of thicken period occupied about 70% of the working volume of the reactor Efficiency of flotation thickening in the ASBRS could be comparable to that of additional gravity thickening of a completely mixed digester. 4. Solids were accumulated rapidly in the ASBR during start-up period. Solids concentrations in the ASBRS were 2.6 times higher than that in the completely mixed control reactor at steady state. Dehydrogenase activity had a strong correlation with the solids concentration. Dehydrogenase activity of the digested flu형e in the ASBR was 2.9 times higher than that of the flu형e in the control reactor, and about 25 times higher than that of the subnatant in the ASBR. 5. Remarkable increase in equivalent gas production of 52% was observed at the ASBRS compared with the control reactor in spite of similar quality of clarified effluent from the ASBRS and control reactor. The increase in gas production from the ASBRS was believed to be combined results of accumulation of microorganisms, higher driving force applied, and additional long-term degradation of organics continuously accumulated.

The partial lipid degradation with the saturation of double-bond at the acidogenesis stage is known to help subsequent methanogenesis during anaerobic digestion. Acidogenic reactions in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) and a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) were carried out to compare their performances. A mixture of two unsaturated (oleate and linoleate) and two saturated (palmitate and stearate) long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) was used as a model substrate. Biomass retention in the ASBR contributed to the enhanced performance at hydraulic retention time (HRT) below 15 hr. Biomass retention in the ASBR contributed to the enhanced performance compared to CSTR even at shorter HRT. ASBR would be a proper reactor configuration for the acidogenesis of lipid-containing wastewater.
The behavior of total organic carbon (TOC) and phosphate were observed for 15 days with immobilized activated sludge using polyacrylamide (PAA) by sequencing batch reactor (SBR). In the preparation of immobilized sludge by PAA, it was found that suitable acrylamide concentration for actual wastewater treatment was to be 15% through the batch test. When SBR system was operated in the repeated aerobic and anaerobic conditions, TOC removal efficiency was 92%. The uptake rate of phosphate was increased from 1.78 mg-P/g cell/hr on the 5th day of acclimation to 2.5 mg-P/g cell/hr on the 15th day of acclimation. And the total phosphorus content in PAA bead was increased from 40 mg-P/g cell on the 1st day of operation to 55 mg-P/g cell on the 15th day of operation. From this study, lowering the volume of aeration tank was possible when PAA bead was used in wastewater treatment and long operation was also possible without the settler.
Sequencing batch operation consists of fill, react, settle and decant phases in the same reactor. Operation consists of anaerobic, anoxic and oxic (aerobic) phases when nutrient removal from the wastewater is desired. Since the same reactor is used for biological oxidation (or mixing) and sedimentation in aerobic and anaerobic SBR operations, capital and operating costs are lower than conventional activated sludge process and conventional anaerobic digestion process, respectively. Therefore, Aerobic SBR and Anaerobic SBR operations may be more advantageous far treatment of small volume animal wastewater in rural areas.
This research investigated efficient operation mode for the successful performance of SBR(sequencing batch reactor) treating fish processing wastewater, and the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) on treatment efficiency. 2-hour-annerobic, 6-hour-aerobic and 3-hour-anoxic operation during reaction period was found an effective operating method for organic and nitrogen removal from fish processing wastewater in SBR system. The average removal efficiencies of COD, BOD, and total nitrogen in SBR operated continuousely were 91%, 95%, and 67.1%, respectively. The estimated values of biomass yield coefficient(Y), microbial decay coefficient($K_d$), and bioreaction rate constant(K) were $0.35gMLSS/gCOD_{removed}$, $0.015day^{-1}$, and $0.209hr^{-1}$, respectively. As NaCl concentration increased from 5 to 30g/L, sludge settleability was cnhanced but organic removal in the reactor was decreased. NaCl of influent had considerable relationship with COD removal, whereas it did not significant affect nitrogen removal.
The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of three sets of traditional control methods (proportional, integral, and proportional - integral controls) through lab-scale biological reactor experiments. An increase in proportional gain ($K_c$) resulted in reduced dissolved oxygen (DO) offset under proportional control. An increase in integral time ($T_i$) resulted in a slower response in DO concentration with less oscillation, but took longer to get to the set point. P-I control showed more stable and efficient control of DO and airflow rates compared to either proportional control or integral control. Developed P-I control system was successfully applied to lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) for treating industrial wastewater with high organic strength.
Laboratory study was conducted to provide basic data for operating anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(ASBR) process for treatment of nightsoil. The experiments were concerned with digestion characteristics, settleabiltity and dewaterability of digested sludge in ASBR system. Completely-mixed dally-fed control reactor without solid-liquid separation step was also operated to evaluate the baseline performance since the nature of nightsoil was changed with time. In all case, gas production from the ASBR shows 1.3 to 1.44 times higher than that from control, in spite of almost similar trend in organics removal. During thickening period, remarkable decrease in surface settling velocity was observed at the ASBRs compared with the control. In case of the ASBR run, flotation of mixed digested sludge was not occurred. Also, ultimate thickened volume of ASBRs increased 1.2~1.5 times compared with control. Dewaterability of digested sludge without conditioning decreased when the completely-mixed daily-fed reactor for ASBR run was converted to the ASBR. However, improvement of dewaterability of digested sludge from the ASBRs was observed as a result of addition of FeCl$_3$ to digested sludge for conditioning.
