  • To improve the number of simultaneous transmissions of machine-to-machine traffic in a spread spectrum ALOHA channel, we propose a new spreading technique called doubly truncated cyclic code shift keying (DTCCSK). By truncating the codeset of cyclic code shift keying, DTCCSK freely adjusts the spreading factor and the symbol length. As a result, DTCCSK exhibits both a high spectral efficiency of M-ary signaling and low implementation complexity of a direct sequence.

  • This paper analyzes job sequences of men and women using optimal matching in order to find patterns of intra-generational mobility in Korean society. Men and women differ in their job careers: men show long-lasting job sequences with few gaps, while women either have short careers or have interrupted careers with long gaps. Long gaps in men's career are limited to those cases in which men move from agricultural to other job. The results from a combination of optimal matching and cluster analysis show that men's job sequences cluster around major occupations while women's cluster in terms of sequence length. The interrupted careers characteristic of women are considered to be consequent on the burdens of house keeping and child raising together with the discrimination against women pursuing careers.

  • G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) constitute the largest superfamily of cell membrane receptors, mediating diverse signal-transduction pathways. The melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) has been of interest for its physiological role and size, one of the smallest among the GPCRs, which makes it a good model system for the structural study of GPCRs. To study the molecular structure and tissue-specific expression of MC4R in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), the full-length MC4R gene was obtained using PCR amplification of genomic DNA as well as cDNA synthesis. Sequence analysis of the gene indicates that 978 bp of the MC4R gene encodes 325 amino acids without introns. Sequence alignment with the MC4Rs from other fish shows the highest degree of identity (96%) between Paralichthys olivaceous and Verasper moseri, followed by Takifugu rubripes and Tetraodon nigroviridis (89%). RNA was isolated from various tissues to examine the tissue distribution of MC4R by using RT-PCR. The results showed major expression of MC4R in the liver, brain, and eye, which is consistent with the expression pattern in other fish belonging to the order Pleuronectiformes.

  • Burkholderia pyrrocinia CH-67 is a biocontrol bacterium with strong antifungal activity against several plant pathogenic fungi. Transposon mutagenesis was performed to identify the genes responsible for the antifungal activity of B. pyrrocinia CH-67. Of the 2,500 mutants tested using the Fulvia fulva spore screening method, a mutant deficient in antifungal activity, M208, was selected. DNA sequence analysis of the transposon-inserted region revealed that a gene encoding an adenylate kinase-related kinase was disrupted in M208. Antifungal activity was restored in M208 when a full-length adenylate kinase gene with its promoter was introduced in trans. The deduced amino acid sequence of adenylate kinase from CH-67 was 80% identical to that of B. cenocepacia MCO-3. Adenosine diphosphate supplementation or high levels of adenosine triphosphate and adenosine monophosphate together restored antifungal activity in M208, suggesting that adenylate kinase of B. pyrrocinia CH-67 is involved in antifungal activity expression.

  • The ascomycetous fungus Taphrina wiesneri, the pathogen of cherry witches' broom, is highly pathogenic to Prunus yedoensis, the most widely planted cherry trees in Korea as park and roadside trees. A collection of 13 strains of the pathogen in Korea and Japan was characterized by 18S rDNA gene sequence and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. In cluster analysis based on 18S rDNA gene sequence the strains were divided into 2 clusters. In RFLP analysis of the rDNA-IGS region using HhaI, the strains were separated into four patterns, B, C, D and G, of which pattern G was new.

  • We have developed a polymerase chain reactionrestriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) marker that can distinguish male-fertile (N) and male-sterile (S) cytoplasm in onions. The PCR-RFLP marker was located in a chloroplast psbA gene amplicon. Digesting the amplicons from different cytoplasm-containing varieties with the restriction enzyme MspI revealed that N-cytoplasm plants have a functional MspI site (CCGG), whereas the S-cytoplasm plants has a substitution in that site (CTGG), and thus no MspI target. The results obtained using this PCR-RFLP marker to distinguish between cytoplasmic male sterile factors in 35 onion varieties corresponded with those using a CMS-specific sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker. Moreover, the PCR-RFLP marker can identify N- ot S-cytoplasms in DNA sample mixtures in which they are in up to a 10-fold minority, indicating that use of the marker has high diagnostic precision. We also demonstrated the usefulness of the SNP detected in the psbA gene for high-throughput discrimination of CMS factors using Real-time PCR and a TaqMan probe assay.

  • Several tomato production regions in Korea were surveyed for tomato yellow leaf curl disease (TYLCD). Tomato leaf samples showing TYLCD-like symptoms were collected from Tongyeong (To), Geoje (Gi), and Gimhae (Gh) cities of the southern part of Korea. Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) was detected and the full-length genomes of the isolates were sequenced. The TYLCV isolates found in Korea shared high sequence identity (> 99%) with TYLCV-IL [JR:Omu:Ng] (AB110217). Phylogenetic relationship analysis revealed that they formed two groups (with little genetic variability), and the To, Gj, and Gh isolates belonged to the TYLCV-IL group. An infectious clone of TYLCV-To (JQ013089) was constructed and agroinoculated into Nicotiana benthamiana, Nicotiana tabacum var. Xanthi, Petunia hybrida, Capsicum annuum, and Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Hausumomotaro. Agroinfection with a dimeric infectious clone of TYLCV-To induced severe leaf curling and stunting symptoms in these plants, excluding C. annuum. Tomato plants then developed typical yellow leaf curl symptoms.

  • In the blind Maximum-likelihood (ML) detection for Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (OSTBC), the problem of ambiguity in determining the symbols has been a great concern. A possible solution to this problem is to apply semi-blind ML detection, i.e. the blind ML decoding with pilot symbols or training sequence. In order to increase the performance, the number of pilot symbols or length of training sequence should be increased. Unfortunately, this leads to a significantly decrease in system spectral efficiency. This work presents an approach to resolve the aforementioned issue by introducing a new method for constructing transmitted information symbols, in which transmitting information symbols drawn form different modulation constellations. Therefore, the ambiguity can be easily eliminated. In addition, computer simulation is implemented to verify the performance of the proposed approach.

  • This paper is technical review about Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum(DSSS) to apply in launch vehicle system. First, we introduce communication protocol(carrier frequency, code length, process gain, data rate, chip rate etc) about several application system using DSSS. And then, we survey and summarize the effect of doppler shift to the DSSS. The doppler shift is important error factor for PN code tracking in the fast moving system like launch vehicle. So, spread spectrum code acquisition technique for a direct sequence system in the presence of doppler effect must be investigated.

  • Recently, a spatial modulation (SM) scheme achieving high throughput based on quaternary quasi-orthogonal sequences (Q-QOSs), referred to as Q-QOS-SM, is presented for $N_t=2^n(n=1,2,{\cdots})$ transmit antennas. In this paper, based on the design approach of the conventional Q-QOS-SM, new improved QO-SM (I-QO-SM) schemes are proposed for 8 transmit antennas. The new schemes employ Q-QOSs of length 4 or 2 unlike of 8 in the original one, which guarantees more information bits to be allocated for antenna index parts compared to the conventional Q-QOS-SM. By computer simulation results, the proposed scheme are shown to enjoy much higher throughputs compared to the conventional other SM schemes for all simulation environments. Finally, we also examine and compare analytically the performances of the new and conventional SM schemes by calculating upper-bounds on BER performance.
